  • Ask The Readers: Should Kids Get Paid For Doing Chores?   14 years 40 weeks ago

They should be paid - giving them a bunch of chores with a line about "contributing to the family" won't incentivize them to want to do the chores.

  • Ask The Readers: Should Kids Get Paid For Doing Chores?   14 years 40 weeks ago

No, I don't think kids should get paid for doing chores. I think that's simply the action of them pulling their weight, doing their part as a member of the family and no one gets paid for doing that ~ it's part of family life.
However, I don't have a problem with kids earning money by taking on "extra" work above and beyond what is expected in daily life.
My kids were expected to keep their rooms clean, pick up after themselves and take part in daily life by doing dishes, doing laundry, sweeping, dusting, etc. according to their age.
But, if they wanted to tackle things that weren't their daily responsibility, they could do so to earn some spending money.

I think people are divided because there are so many perfectly good ways to give your kids chores AND teach them about money. We don't pay our kids to do chores, that's just their responsibility as a member of the family. We do give them an allowance that we loosely explain is their "salary" for doing the job of being a kid which includes being a productive member of the family, helping around the house and working hard as a student. So we can dock their salary for bad performance, but its not a one-to-one relationship...just like Daddy's job isn't pay for individual tasks. The kids get their salary ($5/week for the 12 yr old & $2/wk for the 9 yr old) every two weeks just like Dad (on Dad's payday in fact) and they have 50% withholding. That means that every two weeks I give them $5 & $2 and I put an equal amount in their savings account. They think its silly and funny, but its teaching them how salaries work...and living on less. Plus they get PLENTY of money from holidays and can work odd jobs to earn more if they want. Just like if Dad were to take a second job for extra cash.

I think that kids should have certain age-appropriate routine chores that they do without pay. If they are asked to do extra things or something that takes more time, they should receive pay. My kids are not paid to clean their own rooms or do their own laundry!

Honestly, I struggle with this, even though we don't have kids yet. I think doing chores for money is probably a good idea if that's all the money they're given, because then it teaches them money management skills, and gives you an opportunity to teach about budgeting, saving, giving, and things along those lines, as well as work ethic and earning your pay with a job well done, not just half-heartedly done.

I think that kids should have a set list of chores that they do for themselves and family without an allowance. It is just part of life. I do feel however that if they want to earn an allowance that there should be extra chores that are available for them to choose to do.

  • Ask The Readers: Should Kids Get Paid For Doing Chores?   14 years 40 weeks ago

My children have required chores that they do not get paid for such as making their beds, keeping toys picked up, and putting shoes away. When a child volunteers to do an icky chore--my 8 year old asked to vacuum out the minivan (!), I did give her something for that effort. Chores are part of being in our household.

  • Life Without a Microwave   14 years 40 weeks ago

Luckily, I grew up without a microwave so have never relied on one. To tell you the truth, they kind of freak me out so I don't want to get one.

  • Ask The Readers: Should Kids Get Paid For Doing Chores?   14 years 40 weeks ago

My kids have regular required chores not tied to $, but they also do extra chores for which they are paid, depending on the size and need of the chore.

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   14 years 41 weeks ago

I've been a client of netspend since 2006 and maybe twice had a very resoluble issue. You don't have to pay the "check your balance fee" you can check it free online or get their text service that comes right to your cell. I always get my paycheck a day early with this card and NEVER have to worry about shady bank practices where you pay for something, the bank withdrawals the money then puts it back in your account hoping your account will get low enough so that they can take the money again, sometimes Months later and charge you fees. There are no hidden fees with netspend. You know exactly what your getting when you sign up. I applied for the card and so far( knock on wood) have been very happy with it.

  • How (and Why) to Buy Life Insurance   14 years 41 weeks ago

I encourage those of you who are searching for life insurance to do your own homework. People are living longer and the need for large amounts of insurance don't just go away at retirement age. Many are still making house payments and carrying other debt (and lifestyles) that require substantial capital to maintain. I'm not suggesting you buy whole life, term or universal life. I'm suggesting you interview financial planners and do your own homework as well. Buying term and investing the difference is a perfectly good way to plan for the long term...however many (and I do mean many) forget to invest the difference. Well written Nora. Thanks.

  • 10 Ways to Make Your Own Ice Cream (and Other Frozen Treats)   14 years 41 weeks ago

It's not something the average homemaker can do, but at Summer Camp we have a science center where we make some ice cream with liquid nitrogen.

Takes patience to get it right (and not get an ice block), but it made some really good ice cream. It helps that you stir the liquid air into the cream.

  • 5 Reasons Not to Apply for a Loan Modification in the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP)   14 years 41 weeks ago

The banks and the government are not interested in us or our problems. They want our assets. The "free" assistance is often offered by the very government who created this problem - and did so intentionally. Most agents are aware of this, while their "drones" are supposed to stave us off and keep us from effectively achieving anything.

You need to hire an attorney specialized in home loan modifications and related legal options. Your attorney works for YOU, knows what the lender is obligated to do, has contacts with your lender, and knows what is available and required by both the lender and the government. Decision-makers do not talk to us. Most people you can actually reach are ignorant of the process, while quite a few are knowingly violating us and our rights.

Hire an attorney as soon as possible. Your attorney can file for a stay, which buys you time. The lenders and government have legal departments. You need someone who can prove you are compliant, and that your lender must comply.

Be careful to hire a specialized attorney - not some scam artist agency or agent. Check him out with Attorney General, Better Business Bureau, Bar Association, and consumer agencies. Pay for legal representation - not a "helper to file for the loan mod"! Keep records of all communications regarding the lender.

That being said, you cannot assume you are entitled or win. However, upon proper guidance and representation, you have greatly increased the odds of "winning" your loan modification, short sale, or deed in lieu of foreclosure.

  • Don’t Waste Your Money on Homeopathic “Remedies”   14 years 41 weeks ago

    Dear writer
It is true, that with high dilutions there will not be a strong effect, and that chemists will not find an atom of the original material.
but homoeopathy can be done with mother tinctures and crude substances -- so if you have a problem to take something which cannot be found by chemistry, then tell your homoeopath, and he gladly will use material doses.
but really you don't seem to have problems using wireless transfer mechanisms, such as radios, TV's, even though you cannot see these radio waves directly -- but maybe its like that, you just don't ask yourself that question, and many people don't ask that question about higher potencies either, -- they are quite happy with the results and the benefits they receive from being treated homeopathically.
