  • 8 Personal Finance Basics to Tackle NOW   14 years 45 weeks ago

Any suggestions as to how to plan your retirement at a young age? I'm 26 years old. I've been working to max out my Roth IRA, but just like anyone else, there are so many variables in my life I don't know where to start. The husband is self-employed, so there is no way to estimate what kind of income he may bring in for us over the years. My current profession's income is stable and should not fluctuate over the years (save any COLAs I might receive). I also have no idea how to estimate cost of living 40 years from now. Does anyone have any suggestions or is in my current situation?

Interesting! Unfortunately my ants weren't leaving neat little trails like that - they just seemed to be everywhere! I wonder if they really did get killed off by the sugar? It might be the cornstarch that they mix with powdered sugar to prevent it from clumping, as ants can't digest cornstarch (from what I've read on the net).

Yes, I've heard that different ants are attracted to different things. Some might be more attracted to grease than sugar. For those, I've read that a mixture of Borax with peanut butter is the key to killing them off.

I'd love to hear if someone does know about different ants being attracted to different foods. I can say from my own experience that I had a strain of ants one year who were totally turned off by chili powder, but next year's ants didn't mind it at all.

  • 10 Ways to Make Your Own Ice Cream (and Other Frozen Treats)   14 years 45 weeks ago

I've got two more suggestions. Our blog has videos for the recipes, so I included the links.
    1) Use a coffee can to make ice cream, but do not substitute tupperware for the container. http://blog.mangomoney.com/cheap-fun/make-your-own-ice-cream-float
    2) Make popsicles out of thick, all-natural juices like Odwalla or Naked. The texture is really nice! http://blog.mangomoney.com/cheap-fun/make-your-own-popsicles

The worst part about making frozen treats is the waiting period. I definitely want to try your 5-minute blender method!

I don't have much to add. I'm in a battle with ants that doesn't seem promising for my side. :P Every time I think I've routed them, they come back in force.

Last night I went into the bathroom to discover that something there had attracted them - I never figured out what - but there were hundreds all swarming in one area! Yuck!

But I did want to add that I think different ants must have different food preferences - I know most of the time we think of ants being attracted to sweet, but sometimes I see what looks like the same kind of ant bypassing sweets to get to meat, or bread. It's very strange. Do you know anything about this? I suppose the methods are the same for conquering them, but what you have to clean up is different!

I had a terrible problem with ants a kitchen once. One day a messy housemate had spilled s spot of powdered sugar on a counter and not wiped it up. I noticed that the ants were going single file back and forth from the powdered sugar. At least this is keeping them from getting into everything in the kitchen, I thought. So every day I added to the little pile of powdered sugar... after about three weeks, they were completely gone! The thought occurred to me that perhaps their "season" is done, and they'll be back next year. They never returned. ...The only reason I can think of for why this worked is that the workers did not spread out and bring a wide variety of foods back to the hive. The entire hive was living on sugar, and died out. I had killed 'em with sweetness.

  • The Five-Day Freeze: Batch Cooking for the Rest of Us   14 years 45 weeks ago

You pay $1.78 a pound for lean hamburger? Wow... Where I am (Perth, Australia) the lean stuff is $6.50 per pound (and higher still at the butcher), and our poorest-quality stuff (which is 30% fat and goodness knows what else) is still $5.00 per pound! Hamburger is something we don't get to buy very often - and the same goes with any meat, really...

  • 10 Weird and Wonderful Ways to Use Vinegar   14 years 45 weeks ago

Please remember when you read the posted comments, from doctors and nurses, that some may have an agenda; and if not, are certainly bias to western medicine. If we learn ACV cures many concerns, we no longer need western medicine's drugs, we no longer have to visit doctors. Thus, their agenda.
With that said, I drink ACV everyday for the health benefits, yes you should dilute it a bit. But the benfits of ACV are amazing. Two of my favorite that all medical doctors will say are not true, but trust me they are very true, are removing warts (anywhere on the body) and growing a certain body part. Apply a tiny piece of cotton or tissue paper folded a few times soaked in ACV straight from the bottle on the wart, it helps to scratch the top of the wart with a pin, put a band aid over top to hold in place. Twice a day for about one week and the wart will turn black and fall off completely.
The second, making the penis bigger. Apply ACV straight from the bottle to your member and do about 300 fast (1-2 seconds) dry jelging. The results (for me) about 1 inch every two months. Do once a day, every day.

  • Make-Ahead Food: 10 Things to Cook on a Sunday   14 years 45 weeks ago

I usually make a big salad on Sunday so that I can a portion for lunch for a few days. Fresh veggies would go bad around my house if I didn't chop/prepare them for easy access.

I also make my own pancakes. When I say my own- I use the boxed stuff and cook them myself, and freeze them. Much cheaper than buying frozen eggo's for the kids.

  • Extreme Couponing? 5 Reasons Why I’ll Pass.   14 years 45 weeks ago

I would not call myself an "extreme couponer", but if you opened my laundry room cabinets, you probably would say that I am. I have used multiple coupons on great sales on a regular basis for over 20 years - economic good times, economic bad times, and everything in between and waaaay before couponing became popular - even on the internet.

Do I have a stockpile? Yes. Does it look like those you see on TV? No. Most of what I have stored are non-perishable household products that will never expire.

With the advent of the drug chain rewards programs at CVS, Rite Aid, and Walgreens, it became increasingly easy to gradually build a back stock of most of the non-perishable items that we use on a regular basis for absolutely free (okay the cost of gas and some of my time). I had the time, the manufacturers supplied the coupons, and the retailers offered the sales and promotions. We will be on a fixed income soon and I will be glad for the many items that I will not need to buy over the next couple of years.

Getting a half dozen sets of coupons each week and looking for the best deals on products isn't for everyone. I got into it when I was a SAHM with some time on my hands and a desire to contribute financially to the household.

  • Double Coupons – They Could Cost You!   14 years 45 weeks ago

I don't know what the problem is at your Kmart, but at ours I hit 88 Vitamin Water 10/10 with a 55 cent coupon that made them free. No limits, nothing. 88 bottles of vitamin water for $4 is a great deal. Even better considering nothing in Abilene, TX doubles over 50 cents. Head over there and just make sure your coupons match what you are buying and you should have no issues. Maybe different regions are different.

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   14 years 45 weeks ago

I just received a Netspend card in my name yesterday, and after a quick search on Google, and from your article, I have concluded that this is a spam. I'm not activating this and I surely will not be using NetSpend or "...The Bancorp Bank, Inter National Bank, and MetaBank™..."

I recently signed up for a prepaid phone card through Straight Talk, and this NetSpend is a prepaid debit card so I have a pretty strong feeling that Straight Talk was the one that shared my information with NetSpend.

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Have An Emergency Fund?   14 years 45 weeks ago

My family maintains an emergency fund, and we're currently increasing money in ours because we know that there will be a month or two at least where I will be unemployed after the summer. In addition to the emergency fund, I try to increase other revenue streams to survive periods like this. We have been through financial rainy days like this before, and we know the key to weathering these storms is financial planning and an emergency fund.

  • No Signal? 6 Ways to Boost Your Cell Phone Reception   14 years 45 weeks ago

i have a verizon motorola razr and it gets the absolute worst service ever...only around the city i live of course. i called verizon and they said that i should be getting about 3 to 4 bars and im getting 1. my old phone used to get that many bars but i think something is wrong with the razr. i have tried reprograming it several times manually and through the *228 and i have tried option 1 and 2, but when it says activation successful and to push ok, i do that and it doesn't do anything, so i have to reset the phone manually. the phone is pissing me off to no end and to top it off sometimes the roaming signal appears and charges me unnecessary amounts of money when there is no way that i could be roaming! please help!

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Have An Emergency Fund?   14 years 45 weeks ago

Yes, we have a small, but growing emergency fund. My husband lost his job in 2008 and even with a master's degree it took him 18 months to find another full-time job. My part-time job didn't have any health insurance, nor decent pay. Needless to say, even after using up our savings then, borrowing from my parents, cutting out all extras, and trying to do the home-lending government/bank crap (in which the bank "lost" our paperwork 3 times), we still lost our house and had to file bankruptcy. I'm trying to look at the bright side, though, and see it as a chance to start over again, especially since we tried our hardest to pay our bills. An extra $20 would always be nice!

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Have An Emergency Fund?   14 years 45 weeks ago

I've had a 3 month Emergency Fund for a couple of years. This year, I decided to bump that up to 6 months by Dec 2011. Then because my ARM will reset next year, I'm going to push for a 9 month EF by June 2012.

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Have An Emergency Fund?   14 years 45 weeks ago

Yes, we have an emergencyeny fund and I'm hoping we don't have to use it. We would love to be able to contribute more to it.

  • Extreme Couponing? 5 Reasons Why I’ll Pass.   14 years 45 weeks ago

The problem I had is my wife started buying tons of stuff we didn't need. For the few months she did it, our grocery budget actually went UP! First she had to buy all the binders and organizers. Then she had to by 10 sunday papers every week. All this so she could get $100 worth of crap for $20, but that's still $20 for crap, most of which we'll never use and will sit in boxes until we throw it out. And the rest was for name brand stuff that we could have gotten for just as cheap if we had gotten the store brand.
