Whenever I send something that has to get there on a given day, I send it UPS no question. The Post Office just doesn't have it together when it comes to on-time delivery and package tracking like UPS & Fed-Ex do.

Credit is that double edged sword-it really makes your life easier, but also makes it more complicated. Credit card fraud is so prevalent that nobody is safe, so it's good to make sure people are informed. Good advice, and thanks.

  • Using Money to Track Swine Flu   16 years 51 weeks ago

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. Rajeev, I've always thought of money as a great way to spread infection. In fact, I grew up being taught that you should always wash your hands after handling money, but I still stuffed my mouth with coins to see how many I could fit in there.

MoneyEnergy, I agree that the complex systems share many similarities, mainly the random mathematical nature of it all. I believe the article mentioned something about cell phone usage and movement, as well.

And Nicki, I used to read Stephen King a lot when I was younger (I'm not as familiar with his stuff in the last ten years) and The Stand was one of his best, up there for me with The Shining and Pet Sematary (I also loved his more obscure stuff like Different Seasons).

Thanks to everyone for leaving a comment, and have a nice day.

I get a lot of inspiration from the home front in Britain during World War II. I have read lots about rationing, make do and mend, dig for victory, etc. through diaries, letters, scholarly books, etc. Rationing in Britain actually extended far past the end of the war, so the people had to get quite good at managing with less.

  • How to Make Moonshine   16 years 51 weeks ago

One plan I have to make the boiler from scratch, it’s just small.

Using a roll of copper, lay out sheets to overlap, on the edges, fold and crease it to loop and hook. Tap down the seam and silver solder it. Once the height is what I want, I would seal the side the same way. Fold the bottom out to flange at a 90 deg. make a bottom piece the same way as the sides, cut a circle just larger then the walls. Roll it over the 90 deg flange, tap it down and silver solder it as well. Roll a cone and connect it similar to the bottom technique. At the top of the funnel, silver solder the fitting for the column. For strength, I have noticed a lot of the old stills were placed over a fire pit and covered in bricks or rocks. That should double as insulation and support for the weight on the walls of the boiler. Since mine will need to be portable, I am looking at wrapping it in copper wire and silver solder that to the walls. Bands of flattened, hard copper, pipes wrapped around and riveted on the ends, should work fine, too. With this classic look, I would not want to put a high efficiency column on it, but an old style. You would put an elbow on the top, made from sheets. From there, a long funnel leading to the coils would dictate the style of drink you make. If you want more pure and less flavour, then angle the last funnel up 20-30 deg. part of the steam will collect and fall back down. This is a mild form of reflux. If you want a real flavourful drink, something to age in oak, then angle down about the same 20-30 deg. if you are not sure, do a 90 deg. with the slight incline that the funnel creates, you can adjust the temps to form a slight reflux or heat it up some and get more flavour.

I've been thinking alot about Stephen King's The Stand lately. At the beginning of the book, Constant Reader can follow the thread as the flu starts to be spread (99.4% infection rate if I remember right) and the image that always stuck in my mind was similar - a police officer giving a speeding ticket crawling with flu bacteria, infected poker cards being dealt and infected money being spent. Makes me all itchy just thinking about it. :)

  • Personal Finance Lessons from Online Adventure Game (RuneScape)   16 years 51 weeks ago

Don't get me wrong though, world of warcraft is a pretty nice game... It's just too much for me. I only pick a game up and play it for a little while, rather than burst hours of gameplay before my time limit runs out. I had reached level 80 in about 1 month from the day I started playing and I had quit because I'm a high school student and I can't afford to get addicted to the game at such a critical point in my life.

  • Personal Finance Lessons from Online Adventure Game (RuneScape)   16 years 51 weeks ago

Also, the fact that you can play this game is browser-based means a lot... The detail on it is amazing in my own opinion, they created this game for everyone, not just the people who spend hundreds/thousands of dollars on computers just to play high detail games like world of warcraft and everquest which take up loads of space on your computer, while runescape plays right off your internet browser! You can play this game almost anywhere at anytime, and you can do this in just minutes.

  • Personal Finance Lessons from Online Adventure Game (RuneScape)   16 years 51 weeks ago

Runescape is more of a childrens game, around the age of 10-12 it becomes really popular - most people grow out of it... But other kids have a hard time finding friends to do things with in reality. The aftermath of this is that, they keep playing runescape because they can really easily make friends there (no it's not a healthy relationship to really think they're your friends, they're only people you're acquainted with on the game). I believe it's a really safe game for kids to play as long as you don't let them get too much of it in a short amount of time. I played it from ages 10-15 and joined a runescape clan, which basically is my online family now. You can really learn a lot about the online community by playing this game, but it also can really put you into a stage of computer dwelling boredom. Spending time on runescape was not a mistake in my life, it makes it simple for people to understand basic marketing, just don't take the game too far please, other things can be done in the amount of time it takes to get from level to level. Also, the last comment I would like to add is - the people on runescape aren't very reliable, they could just be jerks on the other side of the computer screen that are in it for jokes/personal gain and they may not help you. It's best to stick with people you know in reality and not to share things with people you don't 'really' know, of course.

*It's a game for all ages, not an overpriced game for half-witted teenagers that are obsessed with all things besides the real problems in the world. Yes I'm talking about world of warcraft... The community there is horrible, and there are a lot of perverted kids there. I really would like to see how most of them act in real situations rather than making jokes of them.

  • 6 Secret Homemade Stain Removers That Kick Butt   16 years 51 weeks ago

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is an emviornmental HAZARD! It is simply a sudsing agent added to almost every cleanser you can think of (Even toothpaste). It has no cleansing properties. It only serves to give us bubbles and the illusion that we are really getting something clean. This is the main reason I make my own cleansers for home and health.

Using a credit estimator (like Credit Karma) is a good way to make sure your credit is in the right ball park.

I got a free subscription for a credit monitoring service because my company had a HD with personal info stolen. I think its a pretty cool service. Could be worth paying for for some people.

There is no such thing as a totally free market. The Ayn Rand/Milton Friedman philosophy can be summed up as follows:

The poor complain, they always do
    But that's just idle chatter
Our system brings rewards to all
At least to all who matter

    You're assuming we're reasonable, Philip. :)

I got sidetracked by comments, as usual, but what I wanted to do, in addition to thanking you for your thoughtful article, was share this article from the NYT - topical, in a way. Thought you might enjoy it, if you haven't read it already.

Reasonable people can differ on Reich's policy prescriptions, but the analysis of the current situation that he spells out in Supercapitalism is really spot-on. Well worth reading, even if you disagree about whether we need to do anything about the current situtation, it's worth understanding it.

Great suggestions! I actually do a pretty decent job of rotating out our frozen/canned supplies, but the snack foods are what stump me. Yesterday we threw out a couple remaining ounces of wasabi peas... I would love to see a recipe that includes them as an ingredient. It probably exists, I'm just too lazy to look for it right now. Next time, though...

A worthy link between H1H1 (or any infectious disease, really) and money. This is an interesting correlation; makes sense. Most dynamic models follow complex systems mathematics anyway, so you could probably also find the same correlation between the confirmed spread of H1N1 and... the postal service, or truck transport of fruit, etc.

    Yes, I understand both 'radical' & ideologue ... & he's both.

He's a left wing economist who fervently believes that government is all-knowing and all-powerful - or should be. For that reason, he despises the constitution and our founding fathers.

I defy anyone to name another oft-quoted economist more liberal leaning.

  • Foraging for Food: The Hunt For The Wild Mushroom   16 years 51 weeks ago

I'm so jealous. I have never found Morels in 20 years! I find plenty of stuff in the Autumn and last year I moved to Sussex where the chalky soil should produce plenty of Morels. Guess what even with my dear elderly dog I found none. But at least I've been gathering loads of wild garlic as a consolation prize.

  • Another path to recovery: higher incomes   16 years 51 weeks ago

Anyone who thinks that Robert Reisch is a radical ideologue has clearly never had a conversation with an actual radical ideologue. I might disagree with Reisch on a number of issues, but 'radical'?

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Even though you can get to the details of this offer through the main Take Care Clinics site (takecarehealth.com), this is a more direct link:
    http://takecarerecoveryplan.com/recoveryplan/

Also FYI - there are application forms on there, so you might as well make it easy and print those out before you go to the store.

Anytime you quote a radical ideologue like Robert Reich, you are bound to get reactions.

It comes down to a difference in people. Some of us don't like self-appointed experts telling us what to do; others simply follow the path of least resistance.

  • Another path to recovery: higher incomes   16 years 51 weeks ago

Wow. The squeals reacting to such a mild and moderately stated post suggest that you hit a few people in the main trunk of their ideological nerve.

I wonder if they actually looked at the two graphs.
