  • What can you do if you cannot afford to pay your taxes   17 years 2 weeks ago

4 years ago I ended up owing a small fortune in self employment taxes. I did the math and determined it was more cost effective for me to open a new credit card with an introductory offer of 0% and ride the balance on that for 6 months rather than owe the IRS a balance and pay their penalties and interest.

Chances are if you owe money you should check your withholding's and balance them accordingly. If you are self employed like I was plan to save 25% of all income for tax time. It may be overkill, but its better to have more stashed away in preparation then it is to owe some.

  • Universal Life Insurance and Whole Life Insurance: A Comparison   17 years 2 weeks ago

I love your article and I find the differences between what happens in the US and the UK very interesting !

Universal life insurance is not something we have over here and would be interesting to see if it would work in our economy !

  • Last Minute Tax-Filing? Extended Post Office Hours and More   17 years 2 weeks ago

I was looking for 20 minutes, called the number for the post office, listened to the news and could not get what I thought would be readily available information.

Thanks for providing the information that the post office didn't!

  • If You Won The Lottery, You Would...   17 years 2 weeks ago

If I have won the lottery... and the day I will collect my money, I will rent a nice car for a day. Without informing my company that i will take the dayoff. (They will most probably call me to my mobile)

Whatever, after collecting the fortune, I will write up the resign letter to my boss and drop it off to the work place without any comments and head straight to my wife and head straight to airport and buy the first class flight out (somewhere like maldive, fiji, etc) of the country.

Enjoy the vacation for a week at top class resort. After returning, we would plan how to slipt the money evenly and prepare to study something I have always wished for (with my wife). While studying, I would open a small business such as
    cafe or pub.

And enjoy rest of my life. happly ever after

  • Why Is "Rich" Often Equated With "Evil"?   17 years 2 weeks ago

I really dont agree with the idea that the middle class will pay for anything. America is great because of wealthy people (not the middle class or poor) The middle class and poor are not the innovators. The rich support everyone else. If america suffers they suffer more than anyone. Bill gates is fantastic. He innovated and created millions of jobs. There is no monopoly about it. I can go download any browser i want or buy any software i want. Microsofts is just better. Bill should get a tax break for this. The poor people that work for him should be taxed for not innovating like he did. I want more Bills in america not more middle class employees.

  • What can you do if you cannot afford to pay your taxes   17 years 2 weeks ago

We had a couple years in our past when we owed a few grand unexpectedly and ended up charging it to buy ourselves some time. I'd charge it on my credit card, get the miles, and then if I needed more than a month to pay off I'd take advantage of a 0% balance transfer promotion to move it to another card. I never needed more than a couple months to pay it off, so it didn't make me too nervous.
This year I'm ashamed to say I had to file an extension, and I was confused about what good that was actually doing me. Thanks for explaining that filing that little paper might in fact save me money (I'm hoping we don't owe anything this year so we won't pay any interest or penalties.).

Linsey, anytime I can connect with you is a good day. Dr. Martin, the health risks involved with stress are significant, and as I've just learned, oral health is directly related to our overall health on so many levels that it can't be ignored. And great point brought up by lucille, though it can work in your favor if your job is salaried and you have lull periods where things slow down and you still make the same income.

I’m definitely excited about making my “work” more efficient. I’m tired of the lag between clicking on something and having it actually happen.

As for what I bought: I went with a Dell. Been buying them for years now (three machines, actually), and I’m pleased with them.

Specs are an Intel Quad Core running at 3Ghz, 4GB of RAM, a 19’ monitor, and the GeForce 9600 video card.

Suffice to say I’m PUMPED. And the best part? ZERO GUILT!

I'm with Gabe Little - What did you end up getting? I just got my own new computer last week and finished building it Friday. :) It's awesome! I haven't found a game yet that I can't run on ultra high settings. :)

  • Modern companies as specialized venture capital firms   17 years 2 weeks ago

...but I think some of the brand-only companies are coming pretty close.  (I'm thinking of companies like Levenger, Tommy Hilfiger, and the old Banana Republic and J. Peterman company.)

Smart companies retain at least the design work, because that's where the biggest part of the value-add is.  Many companies also retain the marketing (although that's as much because they're run by marketers as because marketing is a huge source of value-add).

In fact, almost no book publishers do any distribution any more, because the major booksellers all have a preferred distributor and refuse to do business with any other.  They do often still do their marketing.  Video games are very different because producing a video game is a huge joint venture (more like making a movie than writing a book).

But the film industry is a good example of what I'm talking about.  There is a production company, but almost all the work is contracted out:  the actors are hired under a contract, as is the director, the sound and film editors, costume design, set design, etc.  Separate firms are hired to do everything from special effects to catering.  The production company doesn't do much except buy the rights to the screenplay and then hire out the actual work of making the movie.

I'd expect video games to move toward the film model over time.  The only reason they haven't already is that the game companies own the underlying game engine which can be upgraded and used for the next game more cheaply than writing a new game engine each time.  New game companies generally appear when some small group of individuals puts in the heroic work of creating a new game engine from scratch.  There's another model, though:  One of those small groups writes an incredibly flexible and powerful game engine, and then makes it available under a license.  That will enable a shift to the film company model.  It'll happen.

  • Should I Take a Job That Pays Less Than Unemployment?   17 years 2 weeks ago

There is also the option of working part time. Actually, the new unemployment rules allow you to do so without a reduction in benefits. Check out their stipulations. So you might explore the job market and get the extra $, too.

As for the man denied unemployment because his old company offered him a much lesser job - companies do that to avoid paying unemployment. I had a temp agency I Had to work for whenever they asked, because otherwise my unemployment $ would have been jeopardized. I LOST $ on those jobs - but I went.

Also remember that if you are a union member, as far as I understand, if you are offered a non-union job, you are not obliged to take it.

Of course, you could also work under the table - but that's a whole other issue...

  • Modern companies as specialized venture capital firms   17 years 2 weeks ago

Well, when you're hiring out work you still need to tell people what you want them to do.  So in that aspect the company is doing more than just providing money.  They're providing plans or direction.  For example, Nike outsources a lot of work to manufacturers in China, but they provide designs and specifications for their shoes.

I actually can't think of an example of a non-financial company that actually sells a product that acts like a venture capitalist where the only thing they do is provide money.  Even book and game publishers provide services like marketing and distribution.  Sometimes game publishers provide a lot of technical infrastructure, too.   Even the chip companies here that outsource all manufacturing do the design and marketing in addition to providing capital equipment and such.

  • Swoopo - great auction deals or great scam?   17 years 2 weeks ago

    Hey everyone,

There is a new site using this model that you might be interested in, www.yottabid.com. It is new, so there are way less users (much better odds of winning, if only just temporarily). They also are doing their best to be as transparent as possible and avoid some of the potential pitfalls of this model. Real items are won and shipped daily and you can actually get customer service to listen to you and help you.

In the name of transparency and disclosure, yes, I am affiliated with the site, but not one of the owners.

    Thanks,

    Jani

  • Modern companies as specialized venture capital firms   17 years 2 weeks ago

Of course none of what I'm talking about applies to the companies that receive venture capital--such as the start-ups you're talking about.  I'm suggesting that huge swaths of the American corporate landscape have started acting like companies that provide venture capital.

Of course, hiring an outside firm to do some task is not the same as making an equity investment.  But I think a firm that doesn't do anything except put up money--hiring out all the work to other firms--is best viewed as a financial company, and best analyzed as a venture capital firm with all its capital invested in the one venture that it's hiring other companies to do the work of.

  • Should I Take a Job That Pays Less Than Unemployment?   17 years 2 weeks ago

All depends on the job and one's financial situation, no? Good points to consider. Although if the decision is very difficult, then one is not desperate enough ;)
