  • Are You Wasting or Saving Money With a Warehouse Club Membership?   15 years 41 weeks ago

    Here's how:
    1) Costco AmEx cash back: we earn rebates far and above the cost of membership by this alone (and yes, we pay off the balance in full every month).

Are you sure? Most places I've researched on this say they have not and they paid attention. it does not sound like you have paid attention to the numbers...you are guessing.

    2) Food court and samples: A hot dog & soda is $1.50. This is our super cheap date night meal out - $3 total for both of us! Samples usually provide appetizers and dessert and we have fun.

No, actually in the end the health care costs of eating this garbage will far outweigh your "cheap dates." I shop at whole foods only, pay a premium and will forego future health issues related to garbage cheap foods like hot dogs thank you very much.

    3) It's close to our house and easy to stock up on staples at the same price or cheaper than our discount grocery store. Frozen chicken, beer, soups and cheese are our best bets.

Beer is a staple? Need I say more?

  • Horizon Organic Milk: Is it All Just Lies?   15 years 41 weeks ago

well if you want organic go to your nearest farmers market where you can see the dirt in the nails and hands of the men and woman that grow there crops where a carrot is not the prettiest thing you've seen lol and will last longer than the commercial carrots now organic cereal is the only thing I have seen that is different and it does not get soggy even after five minutes the bottom may be getting there but the top is still crunchy lol.

In addition to not buying things I don't need, I try and not buy services I don't need. Things like washing your own car, grooming your own dog, changing your own oil, etc.

These days I leverage automation to save money. First I have a percentage taken off the top of each paycheck for the company 401k. Next, because my employeer allows you to direct either a percent or an amount of your paycheck to be split between different accounts I also have a set amount directed to my savings account each paycheck. Whats left over is what I live on. It wasn't always this easy, when I was first starting out on my own and struggling I wanted to stop renting and own my own condo. What I did to "trick" myself into saving more money was to round up my bank register entries to bulk up my savings. Since my bank register was how I budgeted back then, when I saw I was out of money I stoped spending (this was before the internet so I didnt have instant access to my bank balance 24/7 like I do now). After about a year of this, I had enough socked away to buy my first condo in downtown Denver.

  • Should Life Insurance Be Purchased as an Investment?   15 years 41 weeks ago

Our son intends to purchase our dairy farm for $500,000. My husband and I figure we would like to recieve $200,000 for ourselves and $300,000 for the rest of our 3 children. Would it be prudent for our son to fund a whole life policy on my husband who is in excellent health in order for the other 3 children to inherit their share?

  • Share Your Best Purchase Stories & Win $33,000 in Prizes   15 years 41 weeks ago

ROI in this context reminds me best of the pair of hiking boots I still have in my closet. Living now in the flat and muggy cement city of Houston I only have the need to use these boots occasionally. I will wear them on a unusual cold day when I need to work, walk, or situated in a field of dirt and mud.

Ordinarily this may not seem to be much of an ROI, but in fact it most certainly is, since I've had these boots 36 years and purchased when I was only 14 years old! These hiking shoes still in use today have not blemished in all these years.

It actually comes naturally to me... I don't go on spending spree's. I tend to wait a while after I decide that I need something (not just wanting something) to see if I really need it. Once it is determined that I do need it then I shop around and wait a little while longer to track the pricing. then when I am comfortable with the current price I purchase it.

I also sell old items that I do not require anymore... might as well make some money back if the items are just going to sit there anyways.

  • 5 Ways to Save Water, Energy, Money, and the World in One Afternoon   15 years 41 weeks ago

There are many different ways to save water.

    - When boiling vegetables or eggs, let the water cool down and then use it to water your plants.

    - If you have to use a dishwasher, try to use it only when full. Otherwise, try to wash dishes by hand.

    - Reuse your dehumidifier water.

    - Know the water footprint of your food.

  • 8 Frequently Under-Budgeted Air Travel Costs   15 years 41 weeks ago

"A personal pet peeve about traveling in America is all the people along the way who expect you to tip them."

Really, Craig? Those who work for tips (waiters, baggage porters, cleaning people, etc.) are not doing so to tick you off - they're just trying to earn a living wage! Many people whose earnings depend on tips are paid well below minimum wage, and many tipped workers who work full time or more still can't manage to earn above the poverty line. As a seasoned traveler, you know when tips are expected. Maybe it's time to just accept the tipping system we have in America, recognize that by under-tipping you do nothing to change the system and only hurt those least-paid workers, and plan to tip! Reframe a negative to a neutral?

Another benefit to watching library movies is the choice of snacks! I make from-scratch popcorn for pennies, compared to what it costs in a theatre. It's fresh, delicious, perfectly buttered and salted and has none of the extra fat, calories, and chemicals of concession-stand popcorn.

I do the mad squirrel thing myself. A bit of everything. Take the first $10 off the top of grocery cash and try not to use it that week. Make a game of it. Take the change from cash transactions and put it in "the jar". Redeem aluminum cans for cash. Any oddball money, like rebates, survey rewards, are put in their specific places towards specific goals. Plus more conventional budgeting, diverting salary into different categories from the get go.

I save money by withdrawing cash every payday and hiding it. I know, I don't earn interest on this money but I also don't spend it. I forget it's there so it adds up quickly. If it's in my bank account I end up spending it (on something valid).

I set a goal for what I want to save per year, divide it by 12, and send that amount to an online savings account every month. Shop for clothes at consignment shops, buy my groceries based on weekly sale ads. Also put my change in a jar, when full, deposit it into a savings account. Use a rewards credit card, pay it in full every month. Maintain an emergency fund. Car is 13 years old, added attic insulation last year WHEW.

  • Life After Bankruptcy: What's Next?   15 years 41 weeks ago

Life after 13" bankruptcy has been Hell. Husband and I were injured at work in 90"s. Filed B.R. IN 95", paid $1,800 a month for 5 yrs., never missed one payment. Issued discharge order in 2000. Soon after, Cenlar, the original servicer, attempted to collect and put the debt on our good credit. 2002, Cenlar re-sold the discharged mortgage debt to Aurora Loan Services, they listed it on our credit as a foureclosure for the next 3 years. MidFirst bought the mortgage FHA/HUD discharged debt in 2005, with Midland Mortgage being the servicer, attempted to collect, enlisting the Law Firm of Barrett Burke Wilson Castle Daffin Frappier. BBWCDF sent letter in 2008 stating the debt was indeed ours. We filed with the FTC, Office Of Thrift Supervision, nothing done, so we sued all 4 in 2008. We settled our difference with Cenlar and Aurora in 2009, they were non-suited.
Midland and BBWCDF, we refused to accept their $40,000 settlement offer, their ambigious, illegal, never-before-seen settlement agreement included the 2000 discharged FHA/HUD Mortgage debt. But get this, their attorney Steven Leyh lied to Judge Wayne Mallia in the defendant's summary judgment stating that we made changes to the settlement agreement on May 11, 2009 and that we had verblly agreed. May 11, 2009, we showed proof to the court that I had been in the hospital May 3, 2009, thru May 11, 2009. My husband was on dialysis on May 11, 2009, we were 50 miles apart. But nothing was ever signed by us, we refused.
We fired our attorney in 2009, paid him $21,000 and became pro se, because the court allowed an invalid, unauthorized Rule 11, 2 page letter to be filed and signed that did not conform to the TRCP 11. We filed the lawsuit, but there is a judgement against us, to accept the $40,000, sign the illegal SA or face jail/fine. Has anyone ever heard of a discharged debt being given back to the debtor after it was discharged by a federal judge? Now you must see that MidFirst Bank contiues to list the debt in our names, loan #0050694040 and FHA Case #493-3741185, phone #1-800-499-1452. This is OCT. 2010 and the stay was lifted in 96", so it has been 14, long restless yrs and we are yet fighting a 2000 zombie discharged mortgage debt. Our case is on appeal at the 14th Circuit Court of Appeals and a Civil Rights Suit on appeal at the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. We are pro se in both cases. Google "ZOMBIE DEBT REFUSE TO DIE,PRINCE ELLA GREEN". MidFirst is an approved FHA/HUD lender, but hud refuse to step in. So the books are being cooked at MidFirst, this is a crime. What makes it worst is that we are both disabled and the system wont protect us, their is a valid 2000" DISCHARGE ORDER"!!!!!!!

  • 4 Reasons Why Everyone Needs Side Income   15 years 41 weeks ago

I've had more than one income source for as long as I can remember. There was always a second job back in my single days. Then I bought a duplex instead of a single house. Now I am married with kids. We still have the duplex to rent out and live in another house. I clean linens for a local wedding rental company and I take care of two kids before and after school. I am able to make some good pocket money while staying at home taking care of my kids.
