  • Frugal Gluten-Free Living: Kitchen Tools that Stretch Your Budget and Your Time   15 years 40 weeks ago

Well, the answer to what you state that you don't understand is this: simply not eating bread isn't an answer for most people. Glad that works for you, but most gluten intolerant people would prefer to do the work and have something that tastes like bread.

  • Deconstructing the Deal   15 years 40 weeks ago

For what its worth, I throw all of this out the window, usually about August of each year.

Every purchase that I deisre to make from August up until around 11/26 or so, I put off until Black Friday.

Its the day you'll get the best prices of the year, on just about everything.

And in some cases I wait till the following Monday, commonly known as Cyber Monday

  • 10 Financial Perks of Marriage   15 years 40 weeks ago

While I realize that a lot of these benefits are realized by couples who are not married, nearly 99.9% of all married couples receive all these benefits.

So while the article could have been 8 Benefits of Living with Someone, that isn't what the author chose to do. I think that's fair.

  • How to Spot Counterfeit Money   15 years 40 weeks ago

As a former cab driver, I often had to accept cash in low-light conditions. However, the "feel-factor" is almost completely fool-proof. Real cash cannot be torn as easily as counterfeit money (a tiny corner of the bill will do), nor does it crumple like standard paper. If I really thought I had a problem, a quick glance while holding up to the interior light would confirm my suspicions one way or the other. However, this was an extremely rare occurence in my case. I never had a problem with the monies I received. However, a person skipping on their fare by running out of the car was more of a problem, but not one I need to address here. I did learn how to avoid such situations, but that is a trick of the trade I am unwilling to pass along to the general public!

I have money taken directly out of my paycheck. One is for a retirement fund, the other is vacation $. Then with the amount I net, part goes into checking, part into savings.

  • How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Recall   15 years 40 weeks ago

This month alone there has been two recalls, one on the Graco Stroller that I just brought. Without hesitation, I stop using the product immediately because it's just not worth the risk. Target here in Ct. has been very responsive and quick with the refund. My fear, like you stated, all recalls aren't always reported on The Morning Show.

  • 10 Ways to Cut Waste When Feeding Kids   15 years 40 weeks ago

I can relate to this post on a couple of levels. I am the product of some weird parentally enforced eating rules, and now a parent myself. I hate to waste, and #3 and #4 come easily to me. #10 as well. I will be implementing #6 and #7 to see if they work for us. Thanks for the post!

Our bunnies and chickens eat most of the leftover veggies, rice, grains, etc. Everything else except meat gets composted.

  • 5 Websites for Swapping Your Clothes and Refreshing Your Wardrobe   15 years 40 weeks ago

There are some really great sites on here. I think swapping goods and services is a great way to save money. The barter system has worked for thousands of years. I try my best to save my money so my family can prosper. I only have room in my budget for a few luxuries like movie tickets once a month, a subscription to http://tagmyphone.com/ (funny), and a book a month for each of the kids. (they have to keep reading or their education will suffer)

Also, depending on where you live, flea markets are a great place to find cheap (not free) stuff for your family too.

  • Waste Not, Want Not: Stop Throwing Away Your Food!   15 years 40 weeks ago

Here's the easiest way to stop throwing away so much food. Reduce your portions and buy less. I really think that individuals are now eating as much for themselves that will feed the whole family. Over the last year, I was able to cut my grocery bill in half for my family of five by simple portion control. I lost 60 lbs. as a nice side benefit!

  • The Pros and Cons of Paying Cash for a House   15 years 40 weeks ago

"The amount of cash you spend does not consist of a significant portion of your liquid assets."

Thanks a lot for this fact.Agree, I'd rather buy it cash (only if I have huge amount of it) for my peace of mind. You never know whats gonna happen next, it times like this, its important you don't end up in shaky situation.

  • Waste Not, Want Not: Stop Throwing Away Your Food!   15 years 40 weeks ago

We have the same thing in the Seattle area - our yard waste bins are composted, so we can use them for food waste and paper products, as well. It's satisfying, and my garbage is almost never even close to full anymore.

I really enjoy broccoli stems, but then, I really love broccoli. I just slice the stems really thinly, coat the whole thing with olive oil, salt, and Indian spices, roast on high heat until everything is really crispy, and then toss with bacon. The bacon, of course, seals the deal.

  • Waste Not, Want Not: Stop Throwing Away Your Food!   15 years 40 weeks ago

See. My hubby (and now my son) never eat the brocolli stems. Even if I cut them really short. Now I know they're missing out.

And I never peel my potatoes.

    I hate throwing away food.

Alameda County in California uses a separate bin on garbage day where people can throw away thier food. Then it gets recycled into compost. I wish more areas did this.

    Thanks for the post!

    Thanks, Beth!

You know, soup stock is a funny topic - I remember when I first started writing for WiseBread, some writers would mention soup stock as something that everyone should make and keep at home, and I thought that they were crazy - seemed like a lot of work, and after all, stock isn't THAT expensive.

But then I started making it, and I found that it was just really handy to have around. I freeze it in big batches, and it's amazing how often I'll be stumped on how to cook something, and I'll remember my frozen stock, and I can get my braising on. ;)

  • Ask the Readers: How Do You Save? (Chance to win $20!)   15 years 40 weeks ago

The best way I've found to keep our savings on track is to focus on what we do have instead of what we're "giving up" to save money or pay off debt. For example, every weekend, I try to go through at least one closet, cabinet or drawer to remind myself of what's in there, pull out what's unnecessary (to sell or donate - and add to my loose change jar or tax rebate), and use what I've forgotten about. The way, we "discover" clothes we haven't worn in a while, coupons we haven't used, games we haven't played, cookies we hid away, etc. We feel less deprived, earn a few bucks on things that get sold and stay organized.

Similarly, we will put off trips to the grocery store for as long as possible. At the end of a week or two, this forces us to scrounge up a meal from the perfectly good stock ingredients we have (but are too lazy to use) instead of buying a pre-made or restaurant meal. As long as we keep up our stock of rice, wheat flour, beans, ground beef or sale meat and canned/frozen fruits and vegetables, we're generally able to make a filling and healthy meal, albeit creative, and avoid the extra expense of fresh ingredients until later.

Oh, that's a good point - I hadn't thought about how much of it is from restaurants. Thanks for the recipe link - that looks amazingly tasty.

I automate maxing out my Roth IRA every month, and sock $50 automatically every month in a separate account for extra fun stuff, like saving for a bike or a vacation.

For years, I have had my 401K contribution scheduled to "step up" 1% each year at the time we get raises. I have never missed it, because it comes out of the raise. I even had it step up last year when I didn't get a raise. I barely missed it then. I am now up to 21% if my salary going in to my 401K. If you told me I could live without 21% of my salary, I would not believe it, but with the 1% steps each year, it is easy.

  • Waste Not, Want Not: Stop Throwing Away Your Food!   15 years 40 weeks ago

Most of the food thrown away is by stores, restaurants, etc. - not directly by consumers.

That said, this was an interesting article. I actually started buying radishes just so I could make http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Radish-Top-Soup/

Depending on the fruit or veggie, you might want to be very sure that you're eating an organic food before you eat the peels. While many supermarket melons are coated in food-safe waxes, much large-scale commercial produce is sprayed heavily either during growth or for storage / shipping. Removing the peel removes (some) toxins. Better yet, buy organic or local.
