  • The Many Reasons to Make Do with Less   15 years 48 weeks ago

This is easier said than done. I mean, it happened to me before when I was just starting to have a life. I just got a low wage job but with a high percentage of getting a promotion. I told myself I can save some money when my salary reaches this amount. It did and had my promotion five times along with increases in salary tenfold from my entry salary. Did I get to save? No, as you go up the ladder of the corporate world, you change peers. From the ranks to management, your expenses also increase as well as your needs. Now I learned my lesson and live the life I want to live not the other way around.

  • The cost of a free ride - why not to use a buyer's agent   15 years 48 weeks ago

This article is absurd, and I think a total fabrication as well.Likely written by a listing agent.

First of all, the listing agent has already contracted for their commission with the seller of the property. If you think they are going to turn over half of their pay, to benefit you ..you are wrong! The commission stays the same, you get poor representation that is one sided and the agent gets double the normal commission.
    Dual Agency is legal..but ethical?.....hardly.
    Smart...Not.

  • Is GDP Still Important?   15 years 48 weeks ago

I never said that the GDP is perfect, because it isn't. But the examples above are not replacements for the GDP. They are simply liberal propaganda. They probably started out as a joke and some hippies jumped all over it. If the GDP is broken, tweak it.

Switching the GDP to one of the jokes above would be like taking your car to a mechanic because your brakes are squealing, and they tell you the brakes have a mechanical issue, so they are replacing them with windshield wipers.

  • Ask the Readers: If You Could Have One Wish (Chance to win $20!)   15 years 48 weeks ago

I WISH that I could afford to not worry about money. No mortgages or credit cards. No car insurance or car repairs. Ah, what a life that will be!

  • Why Going to the Gym Is a Waste of Money, Time, and Resources   15 years 48 weeks ago

Well I do not think they are taking into account fat percentage and muscle mass, yes those woman might have not lost all that much weight overall but they probably lost a lot of fat and replaced some of it with muscle which is denser and weighs more per volume. So this whole article is based on a bad assumption.

  • What I Learned From Working at a Bank   15 years 48 weeks ago

I think the thing that soured me on working at a bank was the day I turned a man down for a loan. He was making over $200,000 per year (in 1988) and I was making just over $13,000. But I had a parking space with my name spray painted on it!

  • Ask the Readers: If You Could Have One Wish (Chance to win $20!)   15 years 48 weeks ago

My wish would be to be able to be mortgage free by age 40. This will be 12 years from now. I'd love to be able to help my kids out(oldest will be 18 by then) with college, etc, and travel with my husband.

  • Going Back to the Root Cellar   15 years 48 weeks ago

Fill a big bucket with sand, layering your veggies within it. You know how no matter how hot the day at the beach - you can dig 6" down into the sand and it's still cool - it's a great way to keep veggies cool and fresh, even when out of season.
Also, a note...Root cellaring was traditionally used to keep whole veggies of all kinds fresh through the winter. Not so much for canned foods, as they are already preserved. Cellaring is a low-tech, low-energy alternative to canning and freezing.

I wish to be financially secure - to have just enough so that I can do the things I like and help out the ones I love.

  • Why Going to the Gym Is a Waste of Money, Time, and Resources   15 years 48 weeks ago

The world is flat! The world is flat! People do not want to hear that exercise doesn't equal weight loss, and they will get angry if you tell them. I exercise because it helps with my mood and keeping my heart healthy. I eat right so I can fit into my jeans.

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   15 years 48 weeks ago

Ummm. To be honest I think you are making a mountain out of a mole hill. I have a netspend card and have had an account for over a year. I get direct deposits; I do all my banking online FREE (it's only a charge if you call), I have no overdraft fees and they even cover me up to 10.00 if I go over on a purchase. They sent you a card; so what? It has absolutely no value and NONE of your personal information unless YOU activate or give it to them. I think this post was a waste of space and energy and you should probably be writing about something that actually counts. This is in no way fraudulent, unless they activated an account and gave you charges for it. SMH

My wish is to pay off our only debt, our mortgage. Paying off the other debts was relatively easy and quick (less than 2 years), and now we are left with the BIG ONE! We are believing that God will bless us over the next couple of years and we can kiss it goodbye forever!

  • Ask the Readers: If You Could Have One Wish (Chance to win $20!)   15 years 48 weeks ago

i wish i could walk into a store and buy anything and not have to worry about how much money i have left in my account, whether it be that book i heard about or even lunch just to know that i am covered. i just want to be able to live comfortably without the anxiety of seeing my next paycheck and having to decide where each cent is going. to barely make it two weeks just so that next payday comes to start the process all over again. and of course be able to pay for school that would definitely cancel out problem one lol.

  • Why Going to the Gym Is a Waste of Money, Time, and Resources   15 years 48 weeks ago

I think the problem here is that the heading to the article is misleading. I think it would be better to say that if you think you can't lose weight without a gym membership that's a cop out, because there are other ways to exercise. Further, as other posters have noted, it is more about reducing calories. It takes a couple seconds to eat a doughnut and maybe an hour or more to burn those calories.

I am a member of a gym, and consider this to be a luxury. I do a weight-lifting class and find I am more likely to stick to the hour of class time, and work much harder, than if I was doing same stuff at home. When you are just getting started, it is important to get some good instruction about form, so that you don't hurt yourself. But after a few classes, additional instruction is only helpful for a motivator. I go because I enjoy my friends there. I would not say the gym is useless, but it is a luxury.

The Time article that Carrie linked to contains a quote from Eric Ravussin. He is one of foremost researchers in the country on the subject of weight loss. It happens I have read a few studies he did, and I found them mind-numbingly technical. He's done studies with people in sealed chambers, tracking their movements and breathing to better understand why metabolism differs in various people. He knows his stuff. When I first read the Time article a while back I remembered thinking that he was commenting more about human behavior as opposed to anything regarding the science of metabolism. I wondered if what he said was taken out of context, since his studies indicated even the small differences in the amount that people fidget (such as jiggle a foot) can partially account for the reason some people burn more calories than others. So I am sure he was not saying that activity didn't matter.

Instead he was commenting that exercising tends to increase your appetite. So if you are not aware, you might eat more after exercise. It is also true that after a work out people are more likely to laze about fairly inert. If you do some homework, you see that watching television burns barely more calories than sleeping. So you may actually burn more calories over the course of the day doing simple tasks around the home than going to the gym for an hour and then collapsing the rest of the day.

Another factor at play is that any stress will lower your serotonin level. Our bodies use carbs to make more. This is from research by an MIT couple and pretty easy to find on the Internet, but also discussed in a good website called bodyblues. The body blues site, written by medical professionals, says that intense exercise stresses your body and so can lower serotonin. This site advocates moderate exercise instead. It follows then that if you stress your body, you may crave carbs. I don't think this carb/serotonin connection is as important for some people than others, as we all differ. Some people get a big endorphin rush after exercise, and I am pretty sure I don't. I do know I get grumpy and moody if I don't get enough carbs, so a low-carb diet would likely backfire for me. In other words, it can become very difficult to sustain the diet if the carb cravings are powerful enough. I can sustain a diet better if I start my day with a bowl of oatmeal... but that's me.

With weight loss we all have to find our own truth. It varies from person to person because we are all different. Looking at is as straight math, it is still about calories in and calories out. But our brain chemistry and who we are psychologically factors in to which weight-loss method we are better able to sustain. It's figuring the right balance between eating and exercising that is best for you.

  • Is GDP Still Important?   15 years 48 weeks ago

Well the "GPP" is certainly a joke but these other three indexes have in the past and are currently being proposed by some serious economists as measurements to complement, augment and perhaps replace GDP growth as a measurement of Economic Health. GDP is still a great barometer for activity but my point was that GDP Growth as a statement on our progress is sort of a misnomer. Plus there are a lot of things, and this may warrant a follow up post, that make GDP flawed as an index to determine our standard of living and quality of life. For instance, GDP doesn't include volunteer work that produces tangible results, it doesn't include the multi-billion dollar underground economy of garage sales, one-off cash transactions on used goods between private citizens, drugs and other black market goods and services, it doesn't include bartering. It doesn't include innovation computers are less expensive and more powerful than mainframe ancestors but GDP makes no allowance for this improvement in quality it just measures the monetary value, which is marked up.

Also and this is the most important point I'm trying to make GDP can't project or predict future economic activity. There is only so much oil and only so many trees and only so much fresh water and I apologize for that.

Lastly, GDP tends to overstate economic progress by not factoring in externalized costs. When you use 250 gallons of fresh water in the production of a T-Shirt you aren't going to get all 250 gallons of that water back and the T-Shirt is going into a landfill.

All the polymers in these Ipads and computers and hot new cell phones are going into landfills, it's gonna take energy to clean that up store it, dispose of it, which means more oil and water.

GDP as a measure of true progress is becoming increasingly outdated and unsustainable.

  • Why Going to the Gym Is a Waste of Money, Time, and Resources   15 years 48 weeks ago

Wow. For those who work out in an organized fashion, do you feel that the benefits exceed the costs?

    Yes.

Ditto to what Betty said. I don't like to be negative, but come on.

  • Ask the Readers: If You Could Have One Wish (Chance to win $20!)   15 years 48 weeks ago

My husband and I used to pay cash for everything or just not buy it. Bills were paid and never worried about. We could spend money and never really think about it. Although we probably should have put some thought into it! Nobody ever had the money talk with me as a child or young adult. I knew very little about it's power to consume you and spit you back out shell and all.

I've had the good sense in the past few years to try and teach myself as much as I can about budgeting and cash flow, savings and the whole bit. Three kids, a dog, cat and gecko later leaves not much choice but to learn. I have also found the courage to teach what I now know to my kids about this very important topic.

So my wish is this: I wish for simplicity. We do not need to be millionaires nor do we need a lot of stuff but I do wish that the stress that comes with debt, mortgage and car payments would fade into the past and our present would bring a breath of life back into our home that has been missing for a bit.

...and the formula to make this happen is hard work and determination.

My one financial wish would be to live tax free.
Imagine how much money could be saved?!

  • Why Going to the Gym Is a Waste of Money, Time, and Resources   15 years 48 weeks ago

Are you kidding me?!?! This article is rubbish! How about let's think of the potential money spent on Diabetic needles and insulin, cholesterol drugs, etc. The amount of time and effort spent on working out in a gym or at home and following your diet in a moderate way is way more cost effective! I am shocked that this article was ever written! Stepping on your toes, injury; this article actually being taken serious, deadly!

  • What Does Being Rich Mean to You Anyway?   15 years 48 weeks ago

While I agree "Rich" isn't a number - and has a lot to do with attitude - there is the reality that in this country - even if you live in alternative housing (don't own a home/pay expensive rent) and use alternative transportation (i.e.: don't own a car) there's the cost of staying healthy - and paying for health-care when you're not that can so easily upset the apple cart. I really wish I knew how to save appropriately for that unknown without living on pins and needles till I get there!

  • Is GDP Still Important?   15 years 48 weeks ago

Is this some kind of joke? None of these alternatives have anything to do with the health of the economy. That is why the GDP has stuck around. It is the best measure for checking our economy.

You can use the others to measure how we are "killing the planet", but they have nothing to do with the health of the economy. Well other than the fact that if we were to switch to them, regardless of what the indicators actually indicate, the economy would be in the toilet for good.

  • How to Get a Life: Consider the Worst Case Scenario   15 years 48 weeks ago

The worst case scenario is not "it doesn't work out, so you go get another job."
The worst case scenario is "it doesn't work out, you can't get another job, spend your savings staying afloat in unemployment, and you lose the house, have no retirement savings and no job."

I am not advocating being paralyzed by fear and staying in a job/situation you can't stand, but it's not like they're giving out prizes to people who follow their dreams only to find out it won't support them. And the longer you are out of the workforce, the harder it is to "just get another job," even at a lower wage than you left.

  • Ask the Readers: If You Could Have One Wish (Chance to win $20!)   15 years 48 weeks ago

If we're talking just ONE wish (I have several) I would really like to work 20 hours a week at my job but still make the 40 hour pay. This would allow me to still be financially stable, but give me time to focus on my health, exercise, building relationships with friends and family, taking care of my home, and just having TIME to do so many things that could improve my quality of life and save money. Of course, I'd like my mortgage paid off and all of that, but really the gift of time is money, and would make my life so much easier!

  • How to Make Moonshine   15 years 48 weeks ago

    zorcy,
So what happened to the alcohol? Looking up "sweetfeed", it seems that the pelleted stuff contains a lot of molasses. Should have fermented, surely? The equivalent stuff here, I think, is some sort of pulped and dried sugar-beets. Sold in hundredweight bags.I might check out the price of that and give it a try. Could be cheaper than sugar.
