  • Beware of Phony Census Workers   16 years 14 weeks ago

Just be aware that if you use a PO Box, a census worker will come to your door because the US Census won't mail to a PO Box. It's a huge pain because my husband has to go out to a lot more homes than he should have to!
You are right that he does not mind taking your answers from your door step, he does not have to go in - and he always has ID, and his laptop from the US Census bureau.
Please either mail it in or at least answer some of the questions!

Payday loan places are a pernicious blight.  When a title cash place moved into my neighborhood I said that I might have preferred a brothel or opium den.

Even so, I doubt payday loans are really the breaking point for most people.  Rather, people only take out a payday loan when their finances are already broken.

Nobody starts by seeking credit from a payday loan place--they resort to a payday loan when all other sources of credit have been cut off.  If you're three months behind on your power bill, even the high interest on a payday loan may be cheaper than paying reconnect fees after your power has been cut off.  But the problem that broke your finances is whatever brought you to such terrible straits in the first place.  The payday loan is just a nearly always doomed effort to stave off complete collapse.

  • How to Make Moonshine   16 years 14 weeks ago

Okay, not much of a drinker myself (on occasion), but I thought I might add some clarity from a chemists standpoint (for information only). I'll try to be brief.

The fermentation process, of course, is where the ethanol is produced. In addition, a few other compounds are produced, and usually remain after distillation; [acetaldehyde, 1-propanol, 2-propanol (isopropyl alcohol), 2-methyl-1-butanol, and 3-methyl-1-butanol]. These compounds are the culprits of the yeast-like odor of the distillate. I won't comment on dealing with those.

The distillation is simply the separation of the alcohol from the water. This takes advantage of the difference in the boiling points of alcohol and water (78.5 deg. C and 100 deg. C, respectively). Your distillation apparatus determines whether or not you can separate liquids with boiling points which vary by this amount (~23 deg. C). The configuration of your still determines its efficiency (its ability to separate solutions with smaller variation in boiling point), so design does matter. The more surface area available for liquid/vapor equilibria to occur, the more efficient the separation. This might help if you are getting weak distillate. Tweak your design.

Since the ethanol boils at 78.5 deg C, the temperature of the solution will boil near this temperature until the separation is complete. At that point, the boiling point of the solution will increase, as it is mostly water. When this begins to occur, you should quickly stop collecting distillate. If you want to take advantage of this, you must be able to measure the temperature of the vapor, just below the level where the vapor enters the condenser.

A couple of points I would like to make:

    1. Trying to heat your mash solution aggressively will not help. Once a solution reaches its boiling point, it will continue at that temperature regardless of the amount of heat added. Just make sure you maintain enough heat to continue the distillation at a fairly even rate. Don't let it stop (you might have to increase the heat slightly throughout). If you try to heat "aggressively", it is more likely that you will end up with more water in your final product because the change in boiling point will happen more quickly.

    2. It is true that this process can only yield 95.6% ethanol and 4.4% water by weight (about 97.1% ethanol by volume) because the molecules interact slightly, forming an azeotropic mixture. That also means that the boiling point, while collecting ethanol, will actually be about 78.2 deg. C, since the system isn't "ideal". Plan to collect from between 78-80 deg. C, if you are able (and desire) to monitor the vapor temperature.

    3. The density of 95.6% ethanol at 20 deg. C is about 0.8028 (as opposed to about 1.0 for high purity water). That means 1.0 mL should weigh about 0.8028 mg. 80% ethanol by weight has a density of about 0.8436 at 20 deg. C. (A nice check for proof if you are interested and have a balance, but no hydrometer).

To learn more, track down some information on organic chemistry, especially fractional distillation techniques. You will be surprised to understand how simple the concepts are, and hopefully you may find some safety tips and confidence along the way. Focus on the lab methods more than theory.

Once again, this is for information only, and you should not take my commentary as advice for any activities in which you decide to engage.

    Have fun!

This article does not mention the ugly effect of the payday-loan and quick-short-loan financial businesses. Their fees are very high, the interest rates are very high. These businesses drain the money from a person's life very quickly leaving them unable to afford to keep up with their needs.

  • Beware of Phony Census Workers   16 years 14 weeks ago

    Great tips for protecting yourself!

You can avoid having a census worker at your home by mailing back the one you receive by post in a timely manner. Census workers are sent out primarily for the houses that don't return theirs by mail.

I was a Census worker in the 2000 Census. I wouldn't have had a job had everyone just mailed it in the first time around!

A home is an investment in sanity, not vanity. By that I mean it is a safe place to get away from the hassles of the world and to sleep soundly. Do I rent or do I buy ? A mortgage is where one "rents" money to "buy" a house, some people have a need to "control" the place they live, others have less need.

I'd like to second the http://www.bigwords.com suggestion. I've been using them for 3 semesters now for buying and renting, and am very pleased with the results. What I like best is that you can search for all the books you need and their robot tells you the best combined purchase option to get you the best overall price for all the books you need. It's pretty cool.

Ordinary people buy into the trap because ordinary people see themselves as victims. The trap depends upon the attitudes of the exploited as much as the exploiter. See Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire.

The trap will continue until we choose an attitude of abundance.

  • Why I (Heart) My High Deductible Health Insurance Plan   16 years 14 weeks ago

The thread that runs through it all is bottom line. IF you don't want insurance that you pay more in than you get out, then for most folks this isn't going to happen. Insurance companies as a rule pay out roughly 75 cents for every police dollar that comes in. The best way to minimize your costs is to do the arithmetic. If you have a 5000.00 deductible with 100% paid after that and pay 400 a month for it that is 9800 a year (potential) with a guaranteed outgo 4800.00 a year. But if you take a no deductible with with a 20 dollar copay that cost 1400 a month your guaranteed outgo is 16800.00 a year. The thing you have to do is add it up,make sure you policy has a maximum out of pocket and I would recommend finding a Insurance person that you trust, any sales person should take the time to go through the policy and help you determine what you need if they don't then call someone else.Don't get in a hurry.

I will be running copies of this to hand out to my neighbors. Hubby and I are the Neighborhood Block Watch Captains, and I will make sure our neighbors get this. We have quite a few elderly on our block, so I want to make sure they understand about not letting just anyone in that may be a phony census worker.

Wow -- great article. I always had the sense that there was something wrong with the interest-rates-are-low-buy-more argument but won't say that I could ever define or articulate this idea the way you have. From a job-search standpoint, a problem with not being flexible is that you can't take a so-so job now to ride out the recession but may need to make a certain amount just to pay monthly bills.

I agree with this comment. I haven't been officially diagnosed yet but my dr gave me a meter because my blood sugar and my A1C were high. Yesterday my blood sugar fasting was 150 and after a light meal it was 200. I eat healthy vegetarian food, I have a slim build and I get regular exercise.

Thanks for the heads up! It's good to know who's a scammer and who isn't. Being someone who earns most of my income online, I've come across some very sophisticated scammers. They all go into the spam folder though. I live in a community with a lot of elderly people so I'll let my neighbors know about this. Thanks again!

  • 10 Important Signs That Your Job Sucks   16 years 14 weeks ago

These blogs are becoming my therapy. I was a victim of #5. I was with the company for nearly two years yet the first week on the job I got the biggest hint of my life that the decision to go to this company was a bad one. One of the partners told me that he had voted against hiring me but lost out to the other two. Coincidentally, the other two partners worked out of satellite offices so I was stuck with this guy with no buffer.
He hired his buddy six months later - they hang out all the time and guess who got the plum territory. Regardless, the buddy is a nice enough guy, but I would rather someone just tell me they don't want me around - we can part ways as friends and we can make life easier for each other.
Still, this sucks. I am looking for work, been on numerous interviews and gotten close but no cigar just yet. I really need help - if anyone has any advice, I am listening.
