I'm not much of a seamstress, but I've whipped up a bunch of cloth napkins that are still going strong and have ventured into the crazy quilt and kid's costume realm more than once. So it can be done, even by the sewing challenged.
if you have a lot of metal or an appliance, you can ask on craigslist if someone wants it. an itinerant recycler may respond. they're called "metaleros" in L.A., and they'll come and pick it up. they take them to recycling centers and make money this way.
Things in my life have been really hard for a while, but this thread got me thinking. I made a post about it on a website I'm building as a network for people who are struggling to share helpful ideas with each other. ( http://poor-folks-helping-poor-folks.webs.com/apps/blog/show/2464419-don... ) It really made me think, and although I was feeling a little gloomy about the potentials of the New Year, for some reason I'm suddenly excited. I hope it will be a good year for all of us!
Very informative post and those sites mentioned are good for finding cheap filler items. I'm sure many people don't know about this. For an Amazon Filler Item Finder I’ve been using the Amazon Filler Item Finder and that site has been amazing for Amazon Filler Items and the Amazon Gold Box Deals feed.
who would keep her ice cream in a communal dorm freezer. To keep it from being eaten, she would take one of her clean white socks and stick it into the container once it had been opened. She said it worked pretty well.
Sorry Deborah and "Financial Samurai" but you are missing a little bit the point.
First of all, most people(me too) are buying things for their function not for their presentation. An Ipod, uglified still remains an Ipod. A modern highend digital camera still remains a modern highend digital camera and doesn't become (even comparable) to old stuff only because you put some tape around.
Second, it's has nothing to do with storing it at home, but with using it outside. So a safe or deposit box wouldn't be of any help.
I traveled through most of latin America and Africa and on my tours off the beaten tracks I always uglified my camera, gps and even put a lot of time my backpack into one of these big PP rice bags (cut holes in it to put the belts through). Aside of that I am always dressed in some older slightly worn out but always clean clothes. I can tell you, it really pays out, when you are in one of those many areas in central africa or the horn of africa where state and laws are nearly absent and the few officials, if present at all are highly corrupt. Aside of being robbed, especially these officials can put you in a lot of troubles, if they think they can get some money out of you. It really pays a lot to be considered a poor dropout and uglifying your things (at least if you don't want to leave everything at home (I never would leave my camera at home)) is one of the best advice to keep your belongings, and in regard of corruption best advice to travel frugal. ;)
Why spend nearly ten bucks (plus S&H) on sandwich bags? Take a bite out of your sandwich after you make it and make sure you press in with your fingers to make indendations in the bread. If anyone else would want to eat it...they're probably hungrier than you are.
My house and yard are more hippy and unmanicured for environmental reasons but in addition leaving a porch window taped cracked, some siding paint peeled and a clunking 2nd car in the drive keeps people from thinking I make money or have valuable goods to steal and live alone.
Set aside clean close and shoes and appearance for business,i am always astounded by how people care about what they look like, its almost sick, if arrogance(sometimes fear of being juged) disappeared would it cause another economic crash?
As bizarre and funny as this concept is, bet it works. Vanity is a huge deciding factor in the things a thief will take. Very smart tactic to uglify your items. It's sad indeed that methods such as these have to be resorted to, but theft is common. Will have to keep this in mind!
I am so there ... I think this is a great idea. As Carrie stated
"All these little rebates and such don't seem much when they trickle in. That's why I like the idea of saving them all for one purpose." With this being the beginning of 2010 it seems to be the perfect time to put these ideas into action so that by Christmas shopping time I can have a nice chunk of "fake money" to use. By buying the stuff for birthdays and such that I normally buy through those rebate sites during the year would really add up. I'm gonna hit the freebie and sample sites pretty hard this year also, I've gotten so good stuff this way that would make great stocking stuffers or filler for gift baskets.
Sure but at the same time I'm trying to teach my children responsibility. If I can't show them how to take care of it responsibly then I'll still be putting dvds in the player for them at 16. Unfortunately that means accidents from time to time. If I had better foresight I would've gotten a burner and given them copies but what can you do now? Thank you for assuming I let my children run roughshod over me and have no discipline ^_^ You sound like a delightful grandfather. Just like the one I never visit.
For me, what works is to get myself on a donation schedule. Every three months or so, I go thru all of my "clutter". If it hasn't been used since the last time I checked it, I normally just drop it off at the Salvation Army.
Please look for a Habitat for Humanity ReStore in your area. I have been volunteering at my local one for five years. We sell new and used furniture, building materials, fasteners, tools, appliances, bathroom fixtures - whatever most folks get rid of when they decide to upgrade. Our local ReStore has made $900K so far and has kept many tons of stuff out of the landfill. Plus donors get a tax write-off. All our profits support only our local Habitat for Humanity efforts.
Happy New Year. I grew up with Dickensons Witch Hazel, my dad is a deciple. His answer to almost any situtation is - use Witch Hazel. He used it to comb our hair, for aftershave, bug bites, cuts, sore muscles, just about everything you mentioned above.
But tonight I wanted to find out just how 'poinsonous' it really is. I have gargled with it periodically over the years. Especially after flossing and my gums bleeding, it feels really good. The dentist was marketing some new kind of antibiotic mouth wash and I figure witch hazel is just as good.
Anyway, is there data on the toxicology of witch hazel?
Great...

Hey Linsey -
Thanks for the link! Maybe I can fit Clark Griswold into future posts as well.
Here's to a great 2010!

"The competence of the fund manager"
Yes if you are going to invest in a managed fund you really want the best manager. It really pays off.
Reporting back to say that furniture polish worked. Thanks.

Loved the article , Thanks
Although one might as well just buy old, ugly stuff and save money yeah?

WalMart still sells fabric? All the locations in my area have discontinued it...I thought it was a company-wide product change.
Thank-you for that tip! Here's information about H for H ReStores:

Which is tax deductible, of course.
Good post
