that was true when the housing market first started to crash but consider the number of people who saved hard and put the 20% down payment down and now are underwater or in foreclosure. The simple fact is no one forecast a 50% plus housing decline and massive unemployment.
My favorite frugal V-Day tip is to spend a virtaul romantic outing playing World of Warcraft sitting side-by-side on our computers, munching on chocolats adn wine while we play. tegrady@hotmail.com
No, I didn't post the comments above, but given that they tend to agree with my comments I'm not surprised at the confusion.
I'm still tagging along to see how the numbers pan out. I like how Xin is approaching the reviews, and her articles do contain practical information.
But to keep this in perspective, one company I used to write paid $100 - 150 per article for decent submissions (this is for short online articles, not full length print features).
Some indie publications, like Brave New Traveler and Matador pay $25. That's three articles for the price of 20 at AC.
I agree with Xin that not everyone can and will be a professional writer, but why not write something meaningful that isn't going to get lost in a sea of thousands of other articles?
Write for an independent publication. Write for a charity. Write a blog.
My point is to write, but do it in a meaningful place and in a meaningful way.
Shop the Christmas clearance aisle for boxes of chocolates that don't look too Christmasy and give them for Valentines day, there are some terrific deals.
I did this a few years ago with my husband and sister after a friend tipped us off. We went to a few different stores, "bought" tons of food--lots of soup that we donated--and had a blast. IME, though, in one store the employees were downright hostile. We each had a cart and they asked us not to return, which didn't matter since it was not a store any of us normally shopped at.
At others, it was easy--self-checkouts (again, store above forbid us once they saw what were doing and made an employee ring us in), and FTMP employees who thought it was awesome. (I'm sure a few at least, did it themselves later with smaller amounts.)
The food wasn't really stuff we ate, but the people we shared it with were extremely appreciative, and considering how much grocery shopping normally costs, it was inexpensive entertainment.
Of all the celebrations of the year, This one touches my heart the most. Heart shaped sugar cookies, with the person's name inscribed. Kinda Big ones. And a personal message. It's traditional, yet fits the day.
I tested the vinegar in my bathroom, it took my breath away! Wonderful! So easy to get it shiny white! But then the smell took my breath away also.. what do you do to take away the smell?
We used to go out for supper and a movie, but with a 2 year old we choose to stay in. My husband likes to cook supper and makes me a nice bath. Then we usually watch a dvd rental. Just as nice when you don't have a babysitter or the budget we once had :)
You can save a lot of money by doing things yourself. Make your own dinner (especially if you make it for your wife) and you can even make your own cards out of construction paper.
Love yourself first and formost, don't sweat it if you don't have someone special to share the day with. Pamper youself with a long luxurious bath, pedicure and manicure and give yourself a facial- lounge all day and do all the things you like to spoil yourself.
I just finished my taxes for 2008 and checked that stated I could be claimed as a dependent, yet I will not. Should I amend my tax return in order to get my stimulus in 2009?
I have ordered a few items from amazon and anything that is a book comes in this casing. Its great but for some reason or another they like to shrink wrap their packages for international orders. The plastic is also quite thick which makes opening the packages still rather hard.
Agree on the dinner together and then make it together. You can put on relaxing music, have some wine and enjoy each others company making the meal then have a relaxing dinner together. It helps you bond and saves money.

I prepare an elegant meal at home, I decorate the table, light candles and put on romantic music.

pamper her. clean the house, stay in, make her favorite dish, or something she's always wanted but just never does (test it first on friends)

Don't cook today, take her out for a romantic candlelight dinner!

We've always stayed in for V-Day. Watch a romantic and snuggle by the fireplace.

What a helpful site. Thanks.
I must defer to your logic. However, I'm still very glad I had that TV warranty!

We have beautiful lakes nearby (Ontario and some of the Finger Lakes) taking my wife to see free views.

Making a nice dinner at home with a bottle of wine can be much more enjoyable then going out for an expensive dinner.
I stay away from the traditional chocolates & flowers. Hand written cards and a homemade dinner has much more meaning.

Baking a heart-shaped cake has always worked with my family, and it's doing something for all of them in one shot.

I make my own valentines day cake instead of buying a store bought one and its just as good!
Take a walk, get a drink or some dessert, and go home. Valentine should be more about spending time with our loved one than spending money.
