Sounds very interesting! The idea of life purpose vs. facts of life (in terms of personal economics) is a very challenging one in American society. I live in a houseful of artists ... who have not found ways to make enough money by pursuing their passions. My sister's family is the same, actually. We defer our passions for our spare time, or hope to pursue them later. But will later be enough?
Census taker jobs are scarce tooLocally they have had over 2,000 people apply . They have stopped taking them now. There are too many people out of work , so this doesn't even make a dent in getting a job.lisa
I see the recommended term for mortgages on your primary as well as a vacation home, but do you know if the same rule applies for a rental: 30 year fixed rate?
If you aren't taking a chunk of your teen's paycheck toward family expenses or an untouchable savings account, they're going to develop spending habits that will not be supportable when they're out on their own.
I watched a lot of my friends drop out of their freshman year of college because they had car payments, and sometimes credit card payments, on top of suddenly paying rent, buying textbooks, and their own food.
Getting through college or trade school without a ton of debt takes frugal habits. Plus, for a lot of people, at the end of college you have to take an unpaid or very low paid position to start your career. Having a lot of money in your pocket at 16 is poor training for that.
I have a twin sister, so we were inevitably compared as we grew up. My parents tried to help us be very individualistic, and we are. We were always there for each other, but we drew apart in our teenage years. But when my sister broke her leg while we were at boarding school, she needed me and I was there for her. We have regained that close friendship.
for some reason i don't think the term "wood" was used literally lol but everybody seems to get all angry about it. I can bet it has some sexual conotations :DDDD
I'm a current best buy employee, and I just want to say a few things.
First, to Andrea: your typical best buy employee, unless s/he is a fairly young person, has made a career of this shitty retail job. Hence, they're reminded daily what failures they are, and it makes them pissy. These people usually trickle up into positions of power, simply because they're available (the old maxim '**** floats to the top' holds true), and thus the power goes to their little warped heads. They act a dick because they can. If the person in question is a younger person, they're just a cock, and unfortunately, there's not a whole lot you can do. You can report them to the manager, but your ire would be better spent elsewhere, since most managers don't give a ****. I don't particularly like my job, but I do everything I can to accomodate the customer while still keeping my job.
I'll tell you this, though: my managers have oft told me to tell a customer go elsewhere than drop the price $20. It's all about profit.
To anyone concerned with the video, yeah, he's exaggerating a touch (much like the ocean is a tad wet), but it's still pretty bad. They want you to live, breathe, and eat Best Buy and it's policies/philosophies/whatthefuckever. This kind of ties into the first wall of text. The employees are either into it, hate it, or don't care. This means that they are either so indoctrinated that the policies and profit are all that counts, think that the entire company is a fucking joke, or just want to get through the day, go home, and smoke a bowl. Good customer service people and salesmen soon outgrow best buy, because they realize their skills will earn them more elsewhere. So you're left with a curious mix of the dregs of retail, people who can't do any better, and people who are too afraid to go elsewhere.
A part of me is always surprised when people get angry at Best Buy. It's like nobody does the math, and realizes that it's staffed by losers and failures.
Job security has disappeared. A couple years ago I thought there were a handful of secure jobs left -- blue chip banker, tenured teacher, government bureaucrat, and certain unionized trades. 2008 proved that none of those are truly secure.
I rather favor the 'flexicurity' model of intentional job non-security paired with generous unemployment benefits. In the absence of that, Philip is spot on that security only comes from self sufficiency. 'Company (wo)man' is out, 'Renaissance (wo)man' is in.
I agree that you need to model responsibility as parents before you can expect your kid to want to pull his/her own weight. I also agree that it's vital that you don't let your son or daughter take on too many hours at work.
Most importantly, I think you need to set an agreement in advance about how much money will be spent and how much will be set aside. When my daughter was 11, I had her take a hospital-run course on what every babysitter should know. When she started getting jobs, I told her, she would be required to bank at least half of the money -- but that she could spend the rest on anything she wanted, or save it, as she chose. When she was old enough for a "real" part-time job, I added, she would be required to bank at least three-fourths of her salary.
Since I brought the subject up before she actually started earning any money, it never became an issue. And when she got that real job, many weeks she didn't spend a dime -- merely handed me her paycheck and asked if I would mind dropping it off when I banked my own check.
Of course, you have to be prepared to walk the walk. And I was: If she had failed to bank the money, I really *would* have gone to the movie theater and told the manager that she had to quit.
Very nice article. A stroke or debilitating illness can take away who you are, but it would do so no matter if you were 'secure' or 'free', so all things being equal, I think think it would still be better to strive for the freedom you wrote about.
What about saving for retirement? How happy will person B be happy when she's living on social security and can barely afford to live? Ugh - I would never want to be in that situation.
There used to be a theory: given an infinite number of chimpanzees with an infinite amount of typewriters and an infinite amount of time one will eventually write a Shakespeare sonnet. Well I think the Internet has almost disproved that one. Plus the typewriters will all jam in the first few minutes and they will rust away long before infinity.
So how about a new one:
Give an infinite number of morons an infinite amount of grant money and they will prove that every lame hypothesis in the world is true.
This study certainly helps ratify that theory. How idiotic that displaying bumper stickers would be an indicator of aggressiveness!
I put bumper stickers on my car. (I also remove the dealer's license brackets.) In fact, I just finished removing my old anti-Bush ones and am wondering what is next. So should you worry about me becoming aggressive? Nope. I am not aggressive. I don't speed, don't tailgate, don't dodge and weave, don't carry a gun or a club. I don't even flip off the people who deserve it. I've been driving every day for 38 years without an accident. In fact, I avoid busy driving times because of the aggressiveness that almost everyone seems to adopt.
I do think the display of bumper stickers shows the courage to speak one's mind. One does not need to be aggressive to show this quiet kind of courage.
So in my mind the important question is: what should be my next bumper sticker? I was thinking of the "Imagine whirled peas" one that I saw somewhere. Waddya think?
It's articles like this that remind me about the blessings that I have in my life. I have always been a everchanging and evolving person. I change shells every few years and have felt perfectly comfortable doing so. It is only up until recently that I have been coming down on myself for this behavior. My income has never been steady but I always managed. The stress of the complicated has put me a bit out of balance and I long to be the breezy fly by the seat of my pants me. I think happiness has to be obtained by putting your life in perspective everyday and thanking God for giving you another day to do so.
Thanks for the great post! I'm sharing it people I know who are looking for extra cash or something to fill the time.
here is more info then you can wrap your brain around, http://homedistiller.org/ they tell how, why and what with
There is no security anymore. Great article.

Fish sauce is definitely NOT vegan.

Yes, I agree, there are a lot to learn on online games. Just don't get too addicted to it.

Also, wow, ressurecting a dead story. My bad, guys. I just got off work and wanted to vent.

I'll forward the e-mails to someone if they can tell me how to go about this.
that metal polish was fantastic! I had the deepest scratches you could imagine, and now it works. Thank you so much! :)
There is no such thing as job security anymore. My view is if you rely on a "steady" job, you had better start developing a side gig, and soon.
The ideal side gig is one where you have many clients that can't or won't all fire you all at once the way a single employer can.
This is a very timely topic, I have recently been discussing Defensive Entrepreneurship and Multipreneuring extensively on my site.
Good Post!
