  • Love Your Skin With Free Health Screenings!   17 years 50 weeks ago

There is a dermatologist in my area who offers free screenings one day per week, one per customer every year. I heard him doing an interview on the radio and started going to him last year. His free screenings were booked up for a while when I first called and I wanted to go ahead and be seen but I did get the free screening this year and have an appointment for next year. I am not sure if there are many physicians who do this but it seems like a win/win situation -- the screening doesn't take long but it wins patients, who will (hopefully) gladly pay for treatments and perhaps visit his medical spa next door sometime.

It would be great if we could have more of these preventative type health care programs more widely available -- and not just for skin screening. How much money would everyone save on health care if the emphasis was on prevention, and not on trying to fix it after there's already a problem?

I'm so glad to hear this!  I have health insurance, but it is an HSA-eligible plan and the deductible is ghastly.  I am looking to make the drive to a participating office to get in on this promotion!

    Thanks,

  • Speeding through your mortgage   17 years 50 weeks ago

I am considering using a heloc to pay off the mortgage on my house. I have a substantail amount of equity and my current Mortgage rate is 5.625%. I can get a heloc today with for 4% with no closing costs and no early payment penalty. I figure I will continue to make the same mortgage payment I make now (or more) with the exta money going towards paying down the heloc balance. By the time the fed raises inteest rates back up to 5.625% I should have the whole thing paid off.

Can anyone see a reason why this wouldn't be a good idea?

  • How to turn an $1800 stimulus check into $1980.   17 years 50 weeks ago

Thanks because most news broadcasts outside the USA tend to give world news... the USA however seems to like to cover itself in its news and not much more. Yes I do realise some channels are different but when I was out there for a few months I still found myself having to go to www.bbc.co.uk/news to get some real world news.

  • You must file a tax return to get economic stimulus tax rebate   17 years 50 weeks ago

If in fact you plug in your numbers you will see that most people will actually be shorted their money rather than rec'v any. My husband and i file joint but I have to file indigent spouse so that his back child support doesn't take everything.
well that eliminates the "$600" for him that goes directly to child support, and because I'm still paying on student loans, well there goes my portion which according to the IRS calculator is only $300 not $600 even though I paid in more than that.
And so for those of us Americans waiting for a piece of the pie who may need it more than others and may never see it We can all say thank you to the IRS. How does it Stimulate the economy if they decide where your portion of the stimulas gets spent?
I for one am tired of a government that gives more to illigals. And we live in AMERICA where I have to push 1 for English.

  • Mama Mia! Mother's Day Gifts that Show You Really Care   17 years 50 weeks ago

Thank you, Sarah! Thank you for not only reminding me that Mother's Day is approaching, but for providing some of the coolest gift ideas I have ever heard. I mean that - well, I meant what I said about those being great ideas; I am actually very aware that Mother's Day is coming up in June.

You have made me genuinely excited to begin writing "Memories Of, Lessons From, Mom." I like your suggestion to write these on individual pieces of paper - like my social security card, those speeding tickets I have no intention to pay, and all of dad's suede business cards - and place them in a jar. Then weld the jar shut.

I believe I'll convince my younger siblings to help purchase a nice exotic jar from India; you know, the one's with the live snakes that lash out at your throat and inject you with deadly venom. Wait, I forgot this is for our mother. I'm sure we can all settle on an ancient canopic jar from Egypt!

And taking pictures! Such a simple, yet perfect idea! As a 25 year-old son that is only now recalling how often my mother says, "we need new pictures of the whole family," I commend you on your thoughtfulness and I thank you with a happy smile. I think I'm going to ignore your suggestion to help clean the house though.

Again, Sarah, thank you for providing me with these great gift ideas at little or no cost; as an unemployed 25 year-old son, it's a little awkward to still ask my parents for money to buy them gifts. And I would also like to thank you in advance for providing these gift ideas that will absolutely make my mothers' Mother's Day one of her most memorable!

Does it feel nice to know that come next Sunday - (I'll admit this time, that I am actually aware that Mother's Day is May 10; although it's very likely that I will forget again at some point) - you will have contributed to making a complete stranger feel extremely special?

  • Mama Mia! Mother's Day Gifts that Show You Really Care   17 years 50 weeks ago

I agree - most Moms want quality time with their kids - small or grown kids. And presents are great - we all love presents - but without the time and love behind them - they can be quite empty. I bet your Mom has a drawer or box full of your old drawings and letters from camp and report cards - that's cause that precious time with you at home is cherished. So, yes, I agree - spend some good time with Mom. Maybe make her something special - make a treat for her - it doesn't have to be about money...just acknowledge her.

  • Healthy, frugal eating   17 years 50 weeks ago

Every week I go to the grocery store and spend a crazy amount of money on food for my family, every year it gets more expensive. We eat well, none of us are overweight etc.. but I still find that we have a lot of junk once I get home, and then during the week we actually stare into the full fridge and think there is nothing to eat. We have lost all creativity when it comes to creating a meal. I bet if we were back to the basics we would have a lot more ideas. To much convenience nowadays in the store, too much sodium etc.. This article is really going to make me think this week as i am shuffling thru the packed aisles of yuck.

Thanks for opening my brain this fine Friday morning.

  • Are You a Yawn?   17 years 50 weeks ago

Even if this is a made up story for the media, I think there is truth to all this. And so what yawns live simple and happy, the world is already complicated enough as it is. I agree with Dee-nice. My hubby and I, we are certainly working towards being more yawn-like.

But Tofu is cheaper, at least where I live, and has no fat and can be flavored in a thousands ways in a thousand recipes. But if one must have meat why not buy a solid piece of roast beef even if it is more expensive, just eat less of it. Go for quality in your diet, not quantity.

  • Dealing with Nasty Debt Collectors   17 years 50 weeks ago

Be Honest with them and tell them that you cannot pay what you agreed upon.

My husband put me in some terrible debt and he wasn't paying the bills. I hated to do this I let the unimportant ones go. which was the two credit card ones.

I know this is going to sound terrible, it only stays on your record for 7 years after 7 years if they have not taken action against you it will be removed from the credit. However, you have to stop paying on it.

Especially if its a credit card. A bankruptcy lawyer told the credit card ones let go. However, pay your bank loans such as your mortgage. Or any other bank loans. Those are the important ones.

I turned things around, I do not have bad debt and I took charge of the finance and all our debts are paid.

However, I do have one credit card, it is well paid for and I have manage to save lots of money.

  • Dealing with Nasty Debt Collectors   17 years 50 weeks ago

With Cell phone numbers being changed they recycle them really quick. I receive a number from Verizon and it belong to a dead beat woman who owed so much money. So what I started to do is I ask the companies for their information and I started filling police reports. One place didn't get it so I filed a small claim suit and asked for the maxium of $1,500. I always win.

So start making police reports and file suits. they will get the picture.

Yes You can stop them from calling the nursing home. Use the Attorney General. They violated the law number 5.

Also you can sue them for harrassing you.

  • What Would You Do: Pay Now or Pay Later?   17 years 50 weeks ago

    Just pay it.

Keep the "savings" in an ING account for a year and get a measly 2.7%, that's whopping... wait for it... $27.

You're going to go through all of that for $27?

    Pay it and be happy.

Wealth is a relative term, we are certainly not self-made millionaires (at least not yet), but compared to others in our age bracket, (30 & 31), our net worth is quite high.

We spend very little of our disposable income on entertainment. We just don't need much to make us happy. If we don't need it, we don't buy it.

  • Are You a Yawn?   17 years 50 weeks ago

I am paying off my debt and hoping to be debt free by the time I am 30 (2011). I will starting my new career since I will be getting out of college then. I will be working to become a YAWN at that time.

I like this new term. ha ha

  • Special offer: 250GB online storage account for free - UPDATE   17 years 50 weeks ago

    Paul,

I'm leaving the states on the 18th of May to begin service as a Peace Corps volunteer in Romania. I'll be working in a high school, or secondary school, teaching English as a foreign language-- as such, I've been guaranteed access to internet, whether in my apartment, at work, or nearby internet cafe'.

I've been encouraged to bring my laptop, as a result. Originally, I was going to bring my external hard drive out to back up any files: writing, assignments, pictures, etc..

However, if I could get one of the online storage accounts, then I could leave my external HD here. It'd be one less expensive thing to pack, and claim traveler's insurance on. Also, I imagine the worst case scenario is my apartment getting broken into, in which case my laptop and external HD would almost certainly get snatched. If I had online file storage, my HD would be safe here the states, but I could still recover any necessary files/photos from my post abroad.

    Cheers,

    J.''
