  • Save More Gas by Safely Following Trucks   18 years 2 days ago

I totally agree with Linsey and Ryan. I live in Seattle and I have to commute through about an hour of traffic and the stop and go always seems to stress me out. Over the past few months, I've learned that following (yes, a safe distance) a truck's lead not only saves gas but also lessens the overall stress level when commuting to school. Trucks to me do seem like wise big brothers because they, like Ryan previously mentioned, seem to find a happy medium when it comes to speed to avoid all of the hectic stop and go mess. Great article! I was surprised to find a great amount of negative comments.

  • Wal-Mart Celebrates Its Own Green Efforts with Free Reusable Shopping Bags   18 years 3 days ago

I work at a grocery store that sells reusable bags. It's not uncommon to see them, or bags from other stores, for that matter. (I don't like Wal-Mart's bags. They're floppy and there's no loop on the inside to hook onto the bag carousel and help hold it up.)

"I don't mean I feel weird, like self conscious or worrying about what people think of me. I could generally care less.
I mean, that when you get to the register, you'd have to quick wrestle the bags out of your cart, and hand them to the clerk.
Now, does that make their job harder? Do YOU bag your own stuff in that case, or do THEY put each bag up on the bag handle holders, and fill them?"

Don't worry about what other people think. Most people honestly don't care what sort of bags the next person in line is using.

If you have the bags on top of your groceries, or pull them out while you're waiting in line, you'll have them on hand. If there is no line, there's no rush to take them out. Just tell the cashier to give you a second to pull them out; there's no rush.

It really doesn't make our job harder. It's no worse, time-wise, than requesting paper bags. It does take a few seconds to unfold them and prop them up, but no more than it takes to pull apart a plastic bag that won't open. Generally, the cashier still bags the groceries in cloth bags.

Plastic bags (or the ones we use, at least) are a PITA, at least to me-- they stick together, rip easily if you so much as look at them funny, and are often hard to work with. I'd be quite content with switching entirely to reusable bags.

  • Why You Don’t Need Mortgage Life Insurance   18 years 3 days ago

He's not doing what he's required. He's not licensed in WA state to do Real Estate or Mortgage Brokering or Loan Originating. He mass faxes people and when you call him to get removed from his list he laughs and says "Get a life" and slams down the phone. This is a violation of State Law and the F.C.C. There are ways of getting this handled and if everyone would report him life would be better for all of us in this business.

  • Bush's economic stimulus package; What will you get back?   18 years 3 days ago

The government doesn't have any money to send everyone $300+. If they had money, they wouldn't be taxing us this april 15th. We are in such a great national debt, and our federal reserve just prints more money to cover social programs, medicaid, the war, etc. So this $150+ billion that is being sent out to "stimulate our economy" will be a $150+ billion added to the money supply. All that does is inflate the currency... you know make the dollar worth less Euros, make the dollar worth less gasoline, make the dollar worth less bread, eggs, and other food. That is why the cost of everything is going up right now, inflation of the dollar.

If any of you have retirement saving or investments... keep this in mind, b/c everytime the FED prints more money, your savings lose value b/c the money you saved will now buy less.

This plan may help keep us from going into recession for a short period of time. But it is avoiding the REAL PROBLEM, the Federal Reserve is weakening our economy by overprinting money. In the end we will have to face this problem. The stimulus package only delays the recession, but it is no real solution.

Fiscal Responsibility in washington, and a sound currency are the answers. Of course that would be a LONG TERM solution and not a quick fix. Bush only needs a quick fix since he is on the way out.

I find it amusing that you mock snopes as a link (granted hardly scientific) when you are citing wikipedia, cybercity and naturodoc as sources.
Also while I don't consider CNN a leading health advice authority the link provided takes you to an identical article as the Mayo link, hardly corroborative.
I actually really enjoy your writings but I think that this is a real case of stick with what you know, or at least refer to your personal experience.
I'd also point out that few of your links refer to original citations either.
If anyone is interested a great evidential review article (and a fairly neutral one at that) on the subject is available online at

  • Are You Stealing From Your Photographer?   18 years 3 days ago

I just recently encountered this issue with not being able to copy pictures of my children because the photos where of professional grade. I figured that since they are my kids that I can do as I please with their images but apparently not, a complete stranger has more rights to their images just because he had the equipment and backgrounds, than I, who paid for the service, the time, and I'm sure the paper. I don't have a problem with paying for anything because everyone should be able to profit from their line of work, the problem that I have was that I wasn't informed or given the choice to purchase not only the pictures but also the rights to do as I please with them. Another issue that some have stated before is that, it's so hard to get a hold of photographers, and what if you can't find him/her then how can you replace pictures that were lost or damaged. Also, what if I don't want my kids pictures posted anywhere, I wasn't asked if I the Guardian would authorize the photographer to use them. It seems like it's a one sided situation here, from now on, I'll make sure I ask for a Copyright release before anyone takes any pictures for me.

  • What will you do when gas hits $4 per gallon?   18 years 3 days ago

My remedy is my Vespa 70+ mpg, top speed of 60 mph, and the feeling of early morning wind on your face wakes you faster then coffee. Unfort. the way American cities and towns are built there will always be a commute of some sorts unless your lucky enough to live in a city where your job is withing bicycle / walking distance. I've been on two wheels for a while now and I love it. You don't need necessarily a small scooter or asomething like a sensible 500cc cycle will easily get you 60 miles per gallon + so in essence you'll save twice as much in gas as you did in that sub compact. Granted it isn't the best at all times of the year, but they are a great idea for a second car in the household.

  • Getting Around the Guidebook: Techniques for Researching your Trip Without Spending a Fortune   18 years 3 days ago

I am a big advocate of checking out the US Dept of State travel warnings before going on a trip. Getting guide books, either at a cheap price or searching online various places still doesn't give you up-to-the minute warnings. Doesn't usually take more than a couple minutest to peruse the site.

as far as guide books go, the Access travel series is nice because it's a street-by-street guide of major cities, and all of the restaurants, shops, museums, etc are submitted by people who've been there. Not too expensive either.

I don't know if water can really do everything it's said to do... good or bad... but I just know that I like to drink it.. a lot.

If you want to lose weight drinking water, I think extremely cold water is key... With cold water, your body has to expend calories to bring it up to your body temperature, while taking no calories in. Obviously it's not going to make you lose a ton of weight, but every little bit helps.

I have a 24oz water bottle that I bring to work every day (for me, the fact that the bottle is pink and curvy helps me like the water more hehe). I always go through the first 24 ounces while I'm here at work, and most of the time I go through at least 16oz more before I leave. I get the "thirsty" gene from my father, so it's not too difficult for me to drink a lot in one day.
