  • What's an employee to do? Part 1   18 years 1 day ago

My parents' next door neighbors all sold their highly inflated homes and moved the hell out the Bay Area.  They moved to places like Oregon and Idaho and Colorado and I think they probably had enough money to retire from selling their two bedrooms for 600 to 800 thousand dollars.  Recently one of my hubby's friends from work also moved to Oregon.  He got a better paying job and was able to afford a house.  I'm pretty jealous actually.  Maybe one day the hubby will  be okay with moving, too.

  • So You Want to be a Landlord? Part I   18 years 1 day ago

**To not rent to a person or family because they rely on help from section 8 does not only show your ignorance; but you are truly making these regular peoples lives so much harder than they have to be.**

**How would you like to be turned down for a home just because a portion of your rent gets paid from somewhere else, it still gets paid**

My mom raised my brother and I with the help of section 8. Without it we would have been homeless, not because we are scum or bad people, but because it's just that hard for a disabled single mom to raise two children on her own. She is the best tenant I have ever known, her house is always spotless, and when she has moved out of a property it always looks better than when she moved in. Whether it's from her repainting or adding beautiful gardens to the property. (I know very wealthy people now, who's houses are pig sty's.) Nobody would ever know my family is on section 8 unless you told them. Just because we are the working poor, doesn't mean we want to live or look like it. Now that I am older and moved out of my mom's house, it amazes me what people say about section 8 tenants. People talk about section 8 tenants as if they are lesser beings, it honestly makes me sick.

PLEASE!! CONSIDER RENTING TO SECTION 8 TENANTS, JUST SCREEN THEM LIKE YOU WOULD ANYBODY ELSE.

Common sense people... if it looks like a duck, it probably is. You can tell good tenants from bad, get to know the person before you let them live on your property.

  • Pricing Eggs, and New Egg Products   18 years 1 day ago

We raise our own chickens and get more eggs than we can use.  We sell the eggs to friends and family for $2 a dozen (well below what they are worth.)  I see it is a service to those we know well.  I can't imagine what the cost will be in the store in a few months!  People are even selling "laying hens" for $12 a hen.  If you can raise your own, it's worth it (and the taste can not be beat!)

Awesome! Go for it!!! Stay tuned at Vagabondish for a 5-part series on How To Become A Vagabond...!

Honestly, if you know there's a market for your product (and it appears that there is), then it's worth a shot. Don't quit your "day job" just yet if you need the continuing income, but anything is possible if you want it badly enough.

Congratulations for thinking outside the box!

I'm working in the information business, providing analysis and reviews of industrials programs to the clients of the company I'm working for and we sell mind maps to them in the reports I issue.

Actually I've been reading your post entitled "Feeling Stuck? 100 Ways to Change your Life", and I admit myself that I am in that kind of period when you really want to change things in your life.

So I was thinking "hey why won't I try to get my own business, working from the place I want by selling mind maps to people ?"

What do you think about the idea of becoming a "Professional Mind Mapper Hobo" ?

I buy local free range eggs from a local farm. The farmer sells them at the farmer's market in the summer and at the local health food store during winter. You can even go to her farm and collect them yourself. Guess what? Aside from the bonus that these eggs are tastier the price has not gone up.

I think that gas prices are effecting the rise in food prices more then people realize.

Didn't mean to sound like I was faulting Xin in any way - she had a very well-balanced article and did her research. My fear was that some reader (like the one who posted three times) would skim the article, figure it was advocating a dangerous pratice when it wasn't - and then try to blame someone else if they got into trouble.

Wheat prices also went up quite a bit because of global competition.  So a lot of bakeries and pizzerias have had to increase their prices.  My Trader Joe's pizza dough used to be 99 cents a pack.  Now it's 1.29.  It's like a 30% increase in two months.  *barfs*

I have also heard that food prices are also rising because of the increased world population and therefore there is a greater demand for food, which we are having trouble meeting.

As you say the demand for biofuels is putting the pressure on our crops, thus impacting on both our food supply and farm animal feeds.

Unless the world doesn't wise up soon and realise that we have to change how we behave and what we use then i truely fear for the future. Fingers crossed for a car engine that doesn't require liquid fuels and for people to waste less, well everything.

What I love is how the government doesn't include food (or energy) in the core inflation. So when they report inflation, it makes the picture look better than it is.

Core inflation is not a practical measure, since energy and food are two things most of HAVE to have, not to mention what we spend a great deal of money on.

...I figured this topic alone would get enough backlash.

As someone who did take issue with your water article, I like this one (I'm sure you really care).
I would be interested to know, given the possibility of a link between STI and prostate cancer, if those who were masterbating more often, were doing so mainly because they weren't having sex and were therefore at a lower risk of contracting an STI to begin with?
I do have one query, surely as a proponent of frugal living you should have included tips for men on frugal self-stimulation? Freecycling old top shelf magazines perhaps? *shudders*

We religiously use our library for movies and tv dvds.
Multnomah County library in Oregon has no fees for these AND they have RSS feeds to notify of new acquisitions so you can get on the cue pretty early.

We also rent from a non-chain, local video store if we just can't wait for the cue!

Knowing when to delegate a task can be very important. It frees you up to take care of other important issues. If you feel that you cannot trust anyone but yourself to get a job done, re-think your hiring strategy!

My mom wasn't connected via wireless, however, she has satellite connection hardwired into her PC.  I don't know if this makes a difference or not.

Good to hear it is working for some folks!

It is my biggest fear to quit the 9-5 job. However, I am taking steps toward doing so. By starting my own business I am able to meet new clients and create extra income. I don't have enough to pull the trigger on the 9-5, but it is helping to build my confidence.

I would love to be home all day with the kids while working. *jealous*
