A very quick and cheap method I use to make water more interesting is to add 3-4 drips of lime or lemon juice. Adds no calories or carbohydrates, tastes nice (but subtle), and I've also heard it's good for your breath.

Great and simple ideas and I share some of the above philosophy in my blog - www.savingtoinvest.com - where I am on road to financial freedom. The most underated one is "Access the power of other people" - very powerful if done correctly.

  • Savers suffering as rates fall--what to do   18 years 3 weeks ago

I have been trying off and on to buy savings bonds for weeks. For some reason, the Treasury Direct site wanted more confirmation of who I was from a bank official before I could buy electronic I bonds (why? I have no clue), and I wanted to send a paper EE bond to my baby nephew. It turns out that, great as my local credit union is, they said they are not allowed to be involved with savings bonds, and so far I haven't found a local bank that will help me as a non-account holder, so both projects are in limbo.

So if you belong to a CU rather than a bank, allow yourself extra time, as the new bond rates are set in May and November.

Try a small drizzle of vintage balsamic vinegar in sparkling water. The good stuff is syrupy and expensive, but you don't need much to flavor water. It's also excellent over vanilla ice cream. Really!

I also take issue with the idea that everyone must have a business empire in order to be worthy and happy. Having work that you enjoy, time to be with your loved ones, and resources to pursue your interests is a nice definition of wealth (see first post on rich idiocy). Building sources of income outside of your daily efforts (which could be dividends from equity holdings, income from rental properties, and/or a government pension) can enable more choices careerwise (not all funds have to come from a paycheck) and may allow better relaxation (full attention on family, meaningful activities) when not working.

He seems to take the same approach that we see in the "Rich Dad / Poor Dad" series. This kind of writing is helpful if it teaches people to think about their spending and realize that a jet ski is not an asset.

It's not so helpful if people get the idea that everyone needs to be a high-roller and a business owner. Some of us can be quite happy as an employee spending half of what we earn and not stressing out over business risk.

Most businesses fail and the owner is left with debt. We employees can live off our emergency fund until we find new employment.

I am a big water drinker and have been since having a few very painful kidney stones some years back. Medical research has shown that drinking real lemonade can drastically reduce your chance of having reoccurring kidney stones.

Anyway, I love to a lemon, squeeze the juice into a measuring cup, add 2 teaspoons of Splenda (actually I use the generic versions), add a little water from a bottle of water, stir it and pour it back into the bottle. Shake, Shake, Shake and you have your own personal real lemonade.

My wife also grows herbs, and I like adding a few mint leaves to bottled water as well.

    Wonderful article!

Most of the co-ops I have encountered allow you to pre-order large quantities of bulk bin items at wholesale or just above wholesale price. Granted, this means you may end up buying a 50lb sack of flour or couscous at any one time, so this isn't viable for those who live within a small household community. However, if you have a large family and go through tons (literally) of dry goods each year, this could be big savings. If you combine this with the member discount (hours of work in exchange for a discount), it's even better.

Also, something I don't read about very often is eating common plants that are indeed edible, just not commonly eaten in our society. I'm not sure you would save much money doing this, but it might make for a fun experiment in frugality. Some examples are rose petals / rose hips (organic/untreated only!), acorns, young dandelion leaves/flowers, miner's lettuce or sea vegetables. I definitely wouldn't do this without some sort of guidance- get a book or a knowledgable friend- but its really most often the herbicides and pesticides used commercially that are most dentrimental, and not the plants themselves.

  • Free Ink Refill Day at Walgreens is Back!   18 years 3 weeks ago

I just got my refilled black cartridge with roughly a day turnaround. The tech said that it shouldn't be used as it was leaking and overfilled but I cleaned it up and it seems to be working okay.

I blotted a fair amount from the print head until it stopped. I waited and there wasn't any extra ink flow so I gave it a try. Kind of advanced and messy, but my fingertips will eventually come clean.

Between my cartridge and two from my parents from the previous special, the success was 1/3. But the worst that happens is that we're out a cartridge that was empty anyway.

If you know me, you know you've created a curiousity monster. If you know me, you know that I've narrowed you down and have a good idea of who you are. What keeps me in suspense is why? Why now? Why here? If you know me you know that I already know the answer to the question Why me? LOL:) That address is actually mywallst.net if you want to take this somewhere that doesn't actually pay me to be on it.

March 5 was almost a month ago boo. Well you must know me well because you know I dig this type of stuff. Still. This is intriguing and if you know me, which to reiterate you probably do, and if you sent the message about still loving me, which you probably did, just slide me a hint, a vague insider brain teaser that only I would know. Other wise, you should contact ME! LOL:)

I'm actually thinking of moving there myself. First thing to do would be to look into the Zhangjiang Hi- Tech Park and find out what opportunities are out there. Then go on forum like this and find some expatriates already working in the technology sector. I think if you have some time off you should just go, it's cheap to get around and you can meet people and the job market is pretty decent there. If you get stuck perhaps we can chat offline and I'll give you e-mail contact info for the executive manager of the high-tech park.

  • How to Erase Your Medical Debt   18 years 3 weeks ago

For anyone who has MEGA health and life get out of it right now, they will pay nothing for you when you need it even if you have their "best" plan. My boyfriend had endoscopic surgery for inflamed nasal pasages, tonsillectomy, and adenoidectomy. They are now calling "sinusitis" a pre-existing condition and therefore will not pay for the surgery. He also was having knee problems at the same time, they won't pay for the x-rays and physical therapy he had to go for. With the surgery he was off work for 3-4 weeks, they said he would be getting disablilty pay through their insurance. None of which they said was true. 2 weeks after my boyfriend had purchased this plan the insurance agent retired. He is now facing a total of at least $21,000 at 3 different facilities...what can we do?

  • Eight Natural Ways to Make Water More Flavorful   18 years 3 weeks ago

My favorite flavoring is TEA (with milk and sugar, which is kinda cheating)! But I drink a lot of regular water. There's a Celestial Seasonings tea (black berry or raspberry, maybe?) that you can just toss two bags in a jug of water and toss that in the fridge (not literally, people, it might break) and it makes it taste like fruit punch. Also, if you boil water and smash some ginger root, and here it gets not quite so healthy - but still better than sugary drinks, add some sugar and then pour the water over that you have a pretty tasty ginger tea. Other than that I do lemon wedges, lime wedges, orange wedges.

After working at a coop for 4 years I've definitely begun to buy all my food there. I have switched to ethically raised/non hormone injected meat for the inproved flavor and basic ethics. I buy a few pounds of it when it's on sale, freeze it and use it later. I also 'dumpster dive' for veggies outside the back of the produce section, siting my rabbits' voracious appetites as the reason. I do give them a lot but almost ALL the stuff tossed is totally edible. Also, eating 'real' foods is a real way to cut down costs, as noted before. It's all the extra stuff that costs. Thanks for a great article!

  • Eight Natural Ways to Make Water More Flavorful   18 years 3 weeks ago

I always have a pitcher of water in the fridge with something in it for a little flavor. Favorite recipes have included 1 whole sliced cucumber + 1 whole sliced lemon; lavender buds (put them in a small muslin bag and let it steep for a while); and fresh ginger and lemon (more a winter drink for me, and delicious hot or cold.)

I also never drink orange juice without adding a flavored seltzer (usually lime, though cherry also tastes surprisingly good) - instant soft drink, no added sugar. Love it!

Awesome post. I used to a lot of money on bottle waters until we bought a water filter-- the kind you keep in the fridge. Even then, it wasn't for weeks after that I realised my problem was that I didn't care for water unless it was *cold*.
That said, cucumber water is a recent favourite, especially on hot summer days. Cubed honeydew melon with cucumber makes a slightly sweeter, but just as lovely infusion.
