    "I hope they get the message soon, or I may have to request a new phone number. Maybe I can try some of your tips."

    I understand completely! In fact, after explaining to one caller that it was a new phone number, and I had no idea who they were talking about, I was told (and I still remember the exact phrasing!) "Well, that's a great story. I hope you have a good lawyer because you are going to need it." And then they hung up. I had no idea what was going on - I didn't have caller id, and the caller wouldn't give me her name, or her company's name. So as soon as I got off the phone, I called the phone company, explained the situation and was very specific that this was causing me distress, and I needed a new phone number immediately. And that was that. Because of the circumstances, they didn't charge me to change it or anything. That's my advice - it's not worth the time and aggrivation.

    posting a comment that says this is a waste of webspace, etc is like asking what a Murphy's Pizza post is doing on a frugal living website. So what? Have a little humor. I gotta admit, I completely fell for it, then went through a second time once i saw the comments! Lol, oh well!

  • Real eggs   18 years 4 weeks ago

    That's a great site--thanks for the link!

    Currently we live in an apartment, and are very pleased with it.  Wanting to keep a couple of chickens is one of the few things that might eventually press us to move.  Since Urbana allows chickens (Champaign doesn't), we figure we'll just decide up front to only buy a house in Urbana.

  • Sound advice for winning on a game show   18 years 4 weeks ago

    its 67% chance of winning because the host has knowledge of which door had the winning prize behind it and which had the dud and is forced to open the door with the dud.

    Consider this. After your first decision there are only three possible outcomes.

    You chose the prize right the first time.

    You chose dud 1.

    You chose dud 2.

    Since a dud must be removed by the host. Its easy to see that by switching you increase your chances of winning (the only way you could switch and lose is if you picked the prize the first time, if you chose either dud the first time you'd be better off switching)

    The following is a list of all possible outcomes of the game
    D = first choice is dud
    P = first choice is prize
    S = switch
    NS = no switch
    W = win
    L = loss

    D-S-W (first dud)
    D-S-W (second dud)
    P-S-L
    D-NS-L (first dud)
    D-NS-L (second dud)
    P-NS-W

    As you can see, by switching, you attain a 67% chance of winning the game.

    Jeff, I'm in the process of reading your new book (from the library, of course) and I love that someone else besides myself thinks of uses for dryer lint. Spinning/knitting with the stuff is too time-consuming, IMHO. Here are my ideas, if you're so inclined, or if you have 10 years worth of lint to do something with....

    Mix with water and Elmer's glue and make sheets of the stuff into felt (ala homemade paper) to use inside quilts, potholders, on top of plant dirt to delay evaporation, lining of boots to keep feeties warm, liner in trunk...that's all I've come up with so far.

    See how you've inspired me? I'm really loving your book. Did you say you were giving away copies?? Signed copies? What a great man you are!!! (words are cheap, aren't they?)

    Keep up the good, cheap work!!!

  • Is Target Really Just as Bad As Wal-Mart?   18 years 4 weeks ago

    Just because a particular Pharmacist refused to fill Birth Control and Emergency Contraception pills is not a valid reason to boycott the store. A better approach would be to ask to speak with the Manager and explain to the store Manager your issues with a Pharmacist exercising his own beliefs (which obviously do not include birth control or EC). What you experienced was most likely the actions based on a personal belief of one individual Pharmacist, not the entire store, or even for that matter, the Target Company.

    They DID steal the content. I will let our powerful team of lawyers (Will) know.

    Thanks to the other commenters, too. I'd like to mention that I've been reading up on supposed diabetes "cures" that stress high-carb, low-fat diets. I'm not even sure I can begin to wrap my head around that idea, but I'm going to keep reading and see what I find for a follow-up article.

  • Less corn planted, despite ethanol   18 years 4 weeks ago

    In the time it would take to get the wildlife refuge in Alaska set for drilling more oil (8-10 years), we could have spent that time and billions in developing more efficient alternative energy. Corn ethanol should only a stopping a point -- a way to get us used to the idea that fossil fuels were the fuel of the LAST century.

    We have the innovation and the ability to move forward and make more efficient energy technology, from jatropha to solar power. Let's move our energy policy and priorities into the 21st century.

  • Less corn planted, despite ethanol   18 years 4 weeks ago

    As the husband of Ms. Linsey Knerl I (Sam) normally don't make comments. Mostly because she's the writer and I'm not. However, I couldn't help my self this time! I have worked in and out of the ethanol/plastic production industry, been part of a farming family, as well as spent much of my last semester in college researching and writing on this topic. That said, answering "why corn and not sugar cane" and "it takes more energy to produce than it produces" are both answered quite simply. In all production (except items dirived naturally through the input of the sun) the output is equal or less than its input. It is more about the "value" of the output that emphasis should be placed. "why corn"? We value ethanol, by-products of the factory process, plastics that are biodegradable, and the feed end-product (such as Cargils Sweet Feed. Nearly nothing "valuable" is wasted in the process. It is not just about the ethanol. Those plants will not last because it is not profitable without the by-products. That is "why corn". Why are farmers not planting as much corn this year than last year has less to do with the farmers' desire, but rather, the agricultural fact that they can't get away with planting corn on corn on corn, year after year. You can get away with a couple years, then you have to choose something else or you will have yield issues. (disease, pests, devalue of ground) This is why as expected soy beans will increase this year and hopefully wheat will be planted more the following year. (soy beans adds nitrogen naturally to the soil). Thanks Phillip! Nice topic!

    I have little hope that people choosing to drive less will become an important way to reduce the total consumption of energy (or liquid fuels), although it would be cool if it worked out that way.

    Instead, I think driving less will be the inevitable result of rising energy prices, putting the burden for reducing consumption on the poor, who have enough burdens already.

    However, I think driving less is an important tactic to be used by frugal people of any income level.  Although you can start driving less immediately (by combining errands and avoiding unnecessary trips), to significantly reduce your driving you need to do things like move closer to your job or find a job closer to where you live.  Those sorts of changes require considerable lead time, meaning that it's worth starting to make the necessary arrangements now rather than waiting until higher prices force you to make them at the same time everyone else is making them.

    Wow

    They say nothing's original. I saw the Apple tattoo on Flickr and decided to write a story around it. Being in advertising, I already knew about the 30-day tattoos and figured it was almost believable. Well, at least it gave some people a laugh.

  • The stuff I try never to buy new   18 years 4 weeks ago

    The new vs. used furniture option should come with a caveat: those with certain lifestyles (such as students), are generally better off buying the DIY crap than searching for quality pieces. I paid $20 for a desk I assembled myself, and fifteen months later it was in the trash, already falling apart, but the bonus was *not* having to move it to my new place. Someone who anticipates moving multiple times or great distances is better off having low quality furniture, IMO, because it's easier to sell/leave behind. (I'm biased knowing that I'll be moving cross country in the next several years, and am already trying to pare down my belongings and avoid acquiring too much more to save on moving costs.)

    From a Washington Post article about best April Fools pranks:

    In 1994 National Public Radio's All Things Considered program reported that companies such as Pepsi were sponsoring teenagers to tattoo their ears with corporate logos. In return for branding themselves with the corporate symbol, the teenagers would receive a lifetime 10% discount on that company's products. Teenagers were said to be responding enthusiastically to this deal.

    There way a joke story about practically the same thing years ago, though it didn't focus on apple. It was about people getting logo tatoos...coke maybe...For a discount

  • Apple introduces most outrageous “rewards” program in history   18 years 4 weeks ago

    See, now, I thought they were ALREADY doing this...

    I wonder how many people will read this and not click through the link or read the comments, and go on to tell their friends about it believing it to be true? Or worse, who will actually go out and get a tattoo and try to get a discount.

  • The weird logic of economic growth   18 years 4 weeks ago
    War

    Another way to get unpaid work into the economy is to invade a country, topple or influence the government, and induce poverty among peasants (who were miraculously managing to exist with nominal incomes far less than that required to purchase necessities.) You can do this by economically "growing" one part of the country, so prices rise. The peasants and nomads adjust to suruvive, whether it's growing more profitable global crops like opium poppies, or moving to a city to work in a factory.

  • Less corn planted, despite ethanol   18 years 4 weeks ago

    The corn prices are a huge problem. Why corn is being used instead of sugar cane, I do not understand. Ethanol can be produced more cheaply from other biomass.

    But then again, all food prices are huge problem for the reasons mentioned above: rising energy and food demand across the globe is putting upward pressure on food prices (through cost of the actual food as well as transportation).

    In my eyes, the solution isn't driving less it's hybrid systems, biofuel mixes, and mass production of better batteries. Hydrogen is a pipe dream at this point.

    Another fantastic way to cut down is shop locally. There are farmer's markets all over this area where you can get locally produced beef, vegetables, fruits, and herbs.

    I'm in central Indiana and there's soybean and corn fields to the left and right of me wherever I go.

    Also, there's plenty of oil to go around for at least another 100 years. It won't always be cheaper than a gallon of milk but there's plenty of oil. Besides Alaska, there's Siberia and the oil sands of Canada. A realy big problem is the government, energy companies, and auto manufacturers know this and have little incentive to do much to switch us to a healthier economy.

    Did I have a point? Sorry the call of "lunch is here" just distracted me. I'll be back if an epiphany occurs.
