  • 10 reams of paper + 12 pens = $15 + free delivery - DEAL HAS ENDED   19 years 5 weeks ago

I was successfully able to add the paper and pen and apply the coupon codes (total cost around $17), but when I went to check on the order, they charged me the full cost of the items (around $63). Is it supposed to do that, or did Office Depot get wise about the deal?

When I tried this, it said the item was no longer available online; guess I have to be quicker next time!

Looks like they caught on, as it no longer works.

The paper doesn't seem to be in stock anymore/the item doesn't exist on their website (received both error messages).

$16.37 got me the 10 reams of Xerox paper, a roll of 3M tape, and free delivery, plus I put in my Office Depot Advantage number so I get a kickback on the purchase to boot. :-) Great tip, thanks much.

i was getting 3-5 calls a day.  in the morning, evening, weekends, all the time.  i kept saying "lynn" wasn't home, but then i decided to just answer all the calls, wait until they finish the first part of their reading, and usually when they say something like "can i verify your address so i can send you information" i say "please take me off your calling list."  they say "sure, ma'am."  and now i don't get calls anymore.

  • Car Buying Part 2 – Into the Devil's domain.   19 years 5 weeks ago

Great advice, and I usually average the trade in value of kbb.com, edmunds.com, etc because kbb.com is the lower end. Then I add a few hundred to this price because they have to make a few dollars, and I make my offer. Always start low and smile. If you can, look in the owners manual of used cars and try to find the original owner. I've called them and you can ask them things like "did your teenage son ever drive this?". Or, did you pull a boat witht that minivan? The best one: why did you sell it?

  • The Backdoor to Amazon's 70% off deals   19 years 5 weeks ago

Here is my implementation of deal shopping

i run two wordpress cms powered shopping websites

    www.plattdeals.com

    www.thedealsplace.com

they both use the same database of stuff, which i update every night , but display differently based on whether you want a grid or a list.

im using more merchants than amazon.com so i have more and usually better deals

I worked at a market-research boiler room years ago b/f caller id. If someone pissed us off, or sounded weird, or just because we were bored, we'd pass the person's phone number around the room.

I highly doubt it is the case, but just a thought.

  • Is There Such Thing as a Messy Millionaire?   19 years 5 weeks ago

Huh. I've been working lately on becoming more productive at work. And keeping my work space tidy has been a big component of it. It's not an obvious correlation, but starting to keep my desk clear really seemed to be part of what's made productivity habits really seem to stick this time.

And, as part of all this, I've started to get more together at home. And then I started saving money and looking at finances (and reading finance blogs). Again, no obvious causation, but maybe some syncronicity? I used to be the most cluttered, procrastinating person ever. Clothes pile the height of the bed, strata of papers going back years... And now, finally, not so much. But it's been years of effort.

I advise baby steps. And positive thinking, envisioning goals and that sort of thing. And just keep starting and starting and starting again until you find something that works. Also, working towards *enjoying* the process. When I started thinking about developing joyful productivity was another key progress point for me. And thinking about how I could enjoy cleaning. (The book "Home Comforts" by Cheryl Mendelson is good)

You'll always be my first favorite lesbian, Nina. It was meant... actually, I'm not even sure what category of smart-aleckiness I was employing there. :)

RE: Your "favorite" lesbian being Suze.

I thought I was your favorite lesbian!

But I feel like much of the book was written for women who feel like they don't have control over their finances in the very literal sense - not just "Wow, I can't control my spending" but more "Wow, my husband only allows me $20 for fun money." The entire book isn't like that, but there are hints of it. I'm assuming that she must have had some exposure to women with that type of financial reality.

Regarding housekeepers - yeah, I'm sure that's the case for a lot of people, in their homes. But I'm talking about self-made millionaires that I know (Ionly know a few, but I do know a few) and none of them are the kind to hire help to organize their lives. They just seem to be naturally organized. Whether it takes the kind of mental effort for them that it does for me is unknown, but it appears to be more of a habit for them. That was my take on it, anyway.

  • The Backdoor to Amazon's 70% off deals   19 years 5 weeks ago

I can't help but notice, too, how many items are not clearance at all, but in fact inflated, phony markdowns from "Amazon stores" with ridiculous 'retail prices.'

  • Is There Such Thing as a Messy Millionaire?   19 years 5 weeks ago

    Rich people aren't slobs because
    1) If you're rich, you can hire someone to clean after you and
    2) If you're rich, you can buy living space with extra storage. Everyone's clean if they have enough room.

Cleaniness is the wrong word. Organized? Sure. It's so much more efficient to not only know where things are but how to access them, whether we're talking about books in the library or your paycheck in your monthly expenditures. But cleaniness? Aargh.

  • Is There Such Thing as a Messy Millionaire?   19 years 5 weeks ago

She assumes most women are financially controlled by men?  Maybe it's just hissy fit day for me, but is she serious?  Controlled?!!?!  I think I'd have put the book down right there.  Or let it join the small number of books that I've actually thrown across the room (with much satisfaction, by the way).

That's not exactly quite what my marriage looks like, anyway.

  • Is this the end of YouTube?   19 years 5 weeks ago

Hey, I read your blog, and you brought out some of the top reasons why Google might lose, but something you might not have seen in any of those articles is that Viacom recently invested in a website called Joost (www.joost.com) which is going to be TV on the net, whenever and whatever you want to watch. A website I troll frequently called Fark (www.fark.com) posted an article about this, and in the user forum, a lot of people were wondering why Viacom doesn't try to figure out how to work with YouTube and profit from this instead of suing them. I'd love to see you continue with follow-ups about this story. Thanks for the good reads!

  • Kmart settles: refunds gift-card fees   19 years 5 weeks ago

Did they give a legit reason for charging fees for something like that in the first place? I know it's illegal to have expiration dates on gift cards in many states now, but I wonder what's line the stores use when explaining that they aren't going to honor money spent.

  • Best Buy scamming customers with Intranet - UPDATED!   19 years 5 weeks ago

Best Buy earned my ire a while back when the salesguy at cell phone kisok refused to show me the cell phone that I wanted to buy. They had a display model that could best be described as "completely and utterly fake". I kind of thought it might be some sort of joke at first, because it looked like a plastic shell with stickers on it. The sales guy was SUCH a jerk. I even gave him my credit card and guaranteed that I would buy the phone if he took it out of the box, and he said that Best Buy had a policy of not allowing customers to see the real phone.

That makes perfect sense to me.

So I only buy electronics at Costco now. They offer good models for the most part and never fuss about returns. Unlike Circuit Cit, which wouldn't tkae back my lousy Toshiba laptop because of a non-disclosed 13 day warranty.
