  • Does the Forever Stamp Make Cents?   19 years 7 weeks ago

it would have been nice if you went into a little more detail about why the stamp wasnt a good idea. i understand that inflation and all that good stuff will go up...i mean heck a US dollar is really only worth abou 4 cents now.

but a stamp is a stamp. you use one first class stamp regardless of whether postage is 29 cents or 89 cents.

so no matter how much inflation goes up....

augh. i can see the far fetched other side of the argument, but they need to consider purchasing power as well..

I'm sure I'd find a way to spend my hundreds on it.

I don't spend my well earned money on dogs (I don't have any) but I sure do spend it on my cats. It is amazing how much I drop each month for them, but they are worth every penny.

I just can't get painter's tape to work for me. My mum has always sworn up and down that she doesn't need it, but I would faithfully roll it out and spent hours removing it aftewards until the last time I painted my place, and I finally gave up. I just can't get it to work for me.

As for Guiness - I can't drink that unless it's on tap. When you going to teach us how to brew our own, huh? Huh? When?

If I were politically involved, I guess I'd be inclined to disagree, but since I rarely discuss anything important over the phone, I guess the government would be totally bored by me as well. I just get a little worried about civil liberties, that's all.

I hate to drop the proverbial shameless plug, but I created a site completely dedicated to sharing stories about mistakes you've made and giving advice to others.

And following in Andrea's footsteps, I will be sending this to my grandfather who inevitably cuts off a finger every time he tries a DIY involving power tools!

    1. Line the roller pan with tin foil -- when you're done, carefully discard the lining and you won't have to wash out the pan.

    2. I use painter's tape, so sue me. That said, I have found that lightly scoring the line where the tape meets the painted wall eases the job of peeling off the tape.

    3. [Suggestion for those who use painter's tape]: When cutting in along the ceiling, attach your angled brush to one of those adjustable brush holders that you can screw onto an extension pole. This saves LOTS of hassle -- no going up and down the ladder, no lugging the ladder around, no stepping around the ladder, etc. Yes, you do have to use the ladder to tape the ceiling -- but that is faster than actually cutting in the ceiling.

I so wanted to say nah-ah, not me! But, well, the boys did get their Science Diet every day last month, but I didn't get my haircut, lol!

Yeah, I knowI am on both sides of the fence. Honestly, I don't like my privacy being invaded, but until things change I can at least comfort myself knowing my phone convos are mostly about boys and rock shows.

I agree with almost everything, particularly Ralph Lauren paint. We used it for the bedroom, and although the color was good, it went on awful, dried patchy and took two coats. Home Depot's Behr is excellent. I also really like Dutch Boy, and their paint can is excellent. Nice job on the rethink Dutch Boy.

As for Painter's Tape, it has always produced excellent results for me (except with the Ralph Lauren paint). I think it can save a lot of time if you are careful not to use it as a super paint-proof barrier. It will almost certainly leak if you are piling paint on top of it.

And as for beer, well, Guinness, Boddingtons, Murphy's Stout, Stella Artois, Red Stripe, Sam Adams and Old Speckled Hen are my favs. Unless you'd care to brew your own, which will be featured in one of my 'how to' articles in the future.

  • The cost of a free ride - why not to use a buyer's agent   19 years 7 weeks ago

I could write an offer pending the Bill's winning the super bowl, the re-unification of south and north Korea, the average temp in Palm Beach being 32 degrees. Or pending the sale of home in a down market like Detroit.

    ##

Then again I love how you saved 8K off the pending offer. What was the market value of the home? Was it the 345,000. Or was what a real buyer was willing to pay. i.e. 327,000. ###In structuring your offer did you remove contingencies that the other offer had? Did you have a sooner close date, so the seller would not have to make two mortgage payments. Did you have a home inspection? Did you not have seller carry back? there are many many thing a buyer can do to make his or her offer worth more to a seller other then just giving more money. Not having a buyers agent could have cost you the the 3k between getting your original offer accepted VS. the offer the sellers agent talked you in to making.

I'm happy that my response was enough to sway your opinion in my favor! I knew I should have gone into marketing.

My political philosphy... I'm so glad you asked! Katy Keene is all that comes to mind. Yup. Katy Keene. All a girl needs to know, really.

  • Free Ways to Keep Big Brother Out of Your Bidness   19 years 7 weeks ago

HA HA HA! You're so funny, Andrea! I take it back, with that thin skin you definitely need to fill the silence with more of your important opinions. For example, tell us which comic books went to form your political philosophy.

I love my dad to death, but he's one of those "Ummmm, close enough" kind of guys. He's officially banned from the crown molding projects that my family is so fond of.

Neither is that nifty saw you got in the $1 store with less teeth than your old gran.

Ha! I'm telling gran. She is going to be MAAAAAD.

Andrea, your political views just aren't very interesting. Quite the opposite, actually.

    Ditto your paranoia.

  • Free Ways to Keep Big Brother Out of Your Bidness   19 years 7 weeks ago

Either you value privacy or you take the whole "I've got nothing to hide so I'm not afraid of government snooping".

First, the argument is awfully slippery-slope - where do you draw the line for invasion of privacy? Second, I don't trust government to limit their spying to terrorists.

I also get a lot of use out of this free timer (suitable for Windows XP).  I have tried using it to become more productive.  15 minutes might be a bit long for someone as easily distracted as I am.  So I've started low (10 minutes) and it's been working out pretty well.  I also use it to take naps at work.  =)

  • Free Ways to Keep Big Brother Out of Your Bidness   19 years 7 weeks ago

When I was a rotten pre-teen my friend "C" & I would purposefully have very adult conversations when we were in then earshot of adults.."Have you had the abortion yet.." Imagine hearing a sixth grader say that--we upset many a snoop.

I figure if you honestly have nothing to hide, need not worry. They could give a sh*t if you are pissed at your boyfriend, had a crummy day at work, or are going to your kid's soccer game. Now if you were planning something like overthrowing the g'vt then that is a whole new ballgame.

Now that said, it is f'd up that we even have to worry about this.

Sad that the technology that is advancing us, is being used to corral is and bring us down.

    Viva La Privacy!

  • Fifteen Minutes of ...   19 years 7 weeks ago

well.. no -- i have a digital timer.  but the ticking does put a jeopardy-theme-like
fire under you, so it could be good (for the productive times, not for the relaxy times).  even if it makes you a little jumpy, i stand by it -- it's worth it.  i'm telling you, the timer method is pretty amazing.
