She bought the home for $1 the city has placed an assessed value on the house someplace around $65,000 (the sale price in 2006). Couldn't she donate this to the church or some other non-profit and write it off as a tax deductible donation on her taxes in which case it she would come out ahead.
my husband's company went bankrupt 3 months ago. glad we were on the cash only budget plan before it happened.
he still hasn't found a job - but we are surviving because of god's mercy and the purging of those nasty credit cards!
the cash only envelopes really work in our household.
here is a cool website that makes "designer cash enveloples" www.crunchycute.com
I like articles like this. Small does add up over time and I have experienced this again and again. That's the goodness of saving bit-by-bit - you get the joy of seeing how much you have saved over time and the surprise that goes along with it.
I have a handy little chart over at my website that deals with just this: The Handy Little Savings Chart. Enjoy! :)
Such offerings are kind of economic imbalance signs. Anyway, buying house at one dollar price means that actual costs will be much higher.
Just remember: nothing is free.
Thus in general I agree with the article and marisa: buyer should be very careful while accepting such offerings.
Yeah, a lot of people are unemployed because they were laid off to boost profits or stock prices. There is no employer-employee loyalty these days because most work arrangements are at-will. It never hurts to improve your own career by keeping an eye open.
Actually, that advice is correct and spot on. Employers have no problem shedding workers at their whim--why should workers be hesitant to do the same to the employer?
I'm always amazed that there are employers out there who are still beating the 'employee loyalty' drum, when they themselves rarely demonstrate any towards their workers.
Stumbled upon this and others of writing - thank you. (I'm gathering quotes for a "living a conscious life" meetup group - we're going to be talking about simplicity.)
As for me, I'm sure it's saved me thousands of dollars throughout my adult life to not have a tv. I think it explains a lot of the differences between my 2 sisters, and myself, and our very different choices.
great article. In the past couple of years i started carrying cash and paying basically for everything in cash--and my goal was to have a certain amount left at the end of the month.
Now I carry cash because, it ends up being faster than credit cards. With having to use the credit card console, punching in buttons (no, i don't know the PIN for my CC, CC sale please, not debit!) etc. Cash puts the onerous back on the CASHier, while i get to stand there and keep a smile on my face, not get annoyed at a stupid CC reader.
A small partnership LLC has two owners and would like to buy life insurance on each other life, as well as on a key employee. The premiums will be paid by the company. Are these premiums tax deductible in USA? I have read articles describing both ways: non-deductible and tax deductible. What's the truth? I appreciate your response.
Wow...you guys have some great stories...chickens and fountain donations and TJ and Starbucks and surprises. Thanks for sharing them with me. And I think it's cool that some people have come up with places to send all that money that's awesome.
I'm not sure I agree with you about the value of the home not being worth $1. Just because a home costs more than the nominal charge of $1 doesn't mean it isn't a good deal. ANY home costs more than the purchase price, and continues to cost money in upkeep, etc.
A better measure of value might be to take the value of the lot, subtract demolition costs and closing costs (and the $1), and if the result is a non-zero number, then it's a good deal... provided you have something you want to do with a lot in that particular location.
"If you live in Michigan, Ohio, Texas, Arizona, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Oregon or Washington State, you’re in a city where this scam has already been reported."
Not to be nit picky (oh heck! yes, i am) but those are states.
There's a book by Colette Dowling called 'The Cinderella Complex: Women's hidden fear of independence' about some women's 'unconscious desire to be taken care of by others' which I always think of when I read articles like these.
Here is a summary of the book written by an Amazon reviewer (says it better than I could):
'This is a book that will reveal to many women some fundamental and probably painful truths about themselves. The central theme is that some women, often the brightest, "best" at school, and from the more affluent homes, suffer from a "Cinderella complex". This is, as the name implies, the desire to be rescued by a "prince": to be whisked away from the frightening realities of living as an authentic adult. This phenomenon is the reason why so many seemingly independent women "lapse" into stereotypical roles as homemakers given the opportunity. This is not necessarily caused by sexist repression but rather women's basic fear of challenge. The childhood causes of this effect are discussed, but the emphasis of explanation is upon the conflicts this causes in adult women.'
We recently purchased 3.75 acres with a small 900 sq foot house in a smaller community an hour from where we currently live - since we telecommute now, it makes sense to us to relocate to a less expensive area with land and rent our city house.
We've been mad gardeners for years, so we're very excited to have about a full 1.5 acres to garden. We've invited 2 couples/neighbors to community garden with us, and we're all excited about it. I also can and preserve lots of fruits, veggies, and jams - another mad hobby.
I've had family make fun of me as if I were a hippie or freak (which I'm not), but I've always enjoyed homemade items and local food. It tastes better!
We've engineered a terrific rainbarrel water collection system to reduce water consumption/costs, and will have approx ten 55-gallon rainbarrels that we'll use for drip irrigation. Towards August, we may have to resort to city water - but we live in SW Washington and we get a fair amount of rain, so it probably won't be too bad.
While I hate the high fuel and food prices just as much as everyone else, I see the longterm benefits and I'm betting there will be many changes. I'm hopeful we'll all be less wasteful (the average U.S. family wastes or disposes of 14% of their food a year), and we'll grow and produce more food locally. That's already hugely popular here in the `green' Pacific NW, and with any luck, it will spread everywhere!
Simple Yet Dynamic Lessons Can Make Having A Newborn Baby Much Less Frightening, Providing You With True Peace Of Mind During The Course Of Pregnancy..
Tips in Preparation For When you Having Your Baby
Pregnancy brings the greatest of joys but also the greatest of responsibilities there will ever be so, prepare yourself mentally, physically and financially because you will need all three areas and many others along the way. This article is about tips, hints and other information on having a baby, not normally covered in other books. Many feel that being a mother is what makes life meaningful and complete. However, what we all don't know and cannot plan in advance for is pregnancy and what will happen during that period of time.
Excessive drinking can result in miscarriage or stillbirth and puts baby at risk of disabilities, behavioural problems and slow growth. A well balanced diet can provide a pregnant woman with most of the nutrients needed during pregnancy, but some supplements may be necessary.
For most women it makes sense to avoid straddling their partner while making love -- woman-on-top, sitting or standing -- since this can cause the semen to leak and may result in fewer sperm making their way to the egg. Ovarian reserve is the number and quality of eggs in your ovaries and how well the ovarian follicles respond to hormones in your body. A reduced ovarian reserve is natural as a woman ages, but young women might have reduced ovarian reserves due to smoking, a prior surgery on their ovaries, or a family history of early menopause.
Morning sickness and all its discomfort can occur at any time. Morning sickness is said to be brought on by changes in a pregnant woman’s hormones. Morning sickness usually occurs in the early period of pregnancy, in the first three months. It is very popular among women, as almost 80% of them have nausea and puke in the morning.
In the third trimester, some pregnant women begin to leak colostrum from their breasts. Colostrum is the first milk that your breasts produce for the baby. It is a thick, yellowish fluid containing antibodies that protect newborns from infection. Once you reach the third trimester, you should talk to your doctor or midwife about labor and delivery. Learn your options for pain relief. Find out how to reach her if you go into labor.
Your body needs vitamin D to help absorb calcium. It is made naturally in our bodies in response to sunlight. The government's Food Standards Agency recommends that all pregnant women take a supplement of 10mcg of vitamin D daily. Vitamin A in excess can be harmful to a developing baby. Liver is a rich source of iron as well as vitamin A, hence it is recommended only small amounts of liver are consumed during pregnancy. If an induction date is looming, there are things you can try to hurry up the waiting game although we cannot guarantee that any of them work. Friends may suggest that eating curry can bring on labour, but spicy foods can cause heartburn and if you're not used to them, irritate the bowel, leaving you with an upset stomach.
Depression after pregnancy is called postpartum depression or per partum depression. After pregnancy, hormonal changes in a woman's body may trigger symptoms of depression. During pregnancy, the amount of two female hormones, estrogen and progesterone, in a woman's body increases greatly. In the first 24 hours after childbirth, the amount of these hormones rapidly drops back down to their normal non-pregnant levels. Birth centers give women a "homey" environment in which to labor and give birth. They try to make labor and delivery a special, warm, family-focused process.
If you're like most new moms, you're eager to hang your maternity clothes in the back of the closet. Thankfully, there's no secret to weight loss after pregnancy. It takes healthy foods, a commitment to physical activity and plenty of patience. Breastfeeding Your Baby Can Help You Lose Weight. Breastfeeding is healthy for you and your baby.
For teens who want to learn more about teen pregnancy, they can go to many anonymous sources, besides the internet. Teen boys who are going to become fathers also need the involvement of their parents. Although some boys may welcome the chance to be involved with their children, others feel frightened and guilty and may need to be encouraged to face their responsibilities. That doesn't mean, however, that you should pressure your teen son or daughter into an unwanted marriage.

I had a high-risk delivery with emergency C-section, 10 day hospital stay, delivered my daughter at 27 weeks at a prestigious (read expensive) teaching hospital. Total bill for the whole event, for me, was $24K. (Don't ask about the bill for my daughter.) Most of the people I know who had regular hospital deliveries were in the $5-6K range, c-sections run about $8-10.
I second all the advice about the things that aren't needed. Clothing, food, blankets, diapers, wipes, carseat, carrier or sling. All the rest is optional. If people must buy gifts ask for books.
As long as you are not breaking the law you should be able to work, stay at home, go to work, kids etc. etc. without other women beating up on you.
Who the heck cares anyway - people who are conflicted about their own choices that who.
WAMU has an online savings acct that is paying 3.5%, and an 8 month CD for 4.24%. No, it won't make you rich, but it's not a bad place to park your stash. I've staggered some CDs and have 4 months of cash in the online savings.
I agree, there's NEVER a good time not to save, it just doesn't make sense to me. I always sleep better knowing that if I were suddenly laid off, injured, or my car died, I have the funds to deal with it!
Wow, I've never heard of this and I live in Oregon. I just copied and pasted the post and passed it on to many friends & family. THANK YOU for the info!
When I travel, I generally stay far away from those cloned souvenir shops. I do like to stretch my legs a bit and go shopping, though, since I don't go out shopping much where I live. I tend to buy stuff that I've been looking for at home or meaning to get anyway.
For example, while in Charleston, my husband and I visited a kitchen store that we don't have back home and found a few things that we had been wanting to get for some time now. Sure, it's not very creative, but we got things that we use on a regular basis and that remind us of our trip. My husband also bought a hat since he's been needing one for work. And in a used book store, I happened to find some books I had been wanting to get.
Food is also usually a good bet. We bought some locally grown tea there since we're big time tea drinkers. Unfortunately, we just recently finished it :( It was very good stuff and we've been talking of ordering some if we're not in the area again soon.
We ended up spending quite a bit on our trip, but all in all, we felt like the money was well spent since as I said, they were all things we were planning to buy at some point.
Here we have a doctor that has 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, 2 or more years of residency, and at least 150 thousand dollars in school loans, and drops this to write a blog. And you guys think that this is uplifting?
