I'm curious about number 27... how does it make one's hair curly, exactly?

  • 99 Free or Virtually Free Ways to De-Stress   15 years 18 weeks ago

Great list! I'm definitely a jogger and Suduko playing gal for de-stressing...maybe its time to try some new ideas. This is the kind of list you need to keep posted on the fridge or your wall at work to remind you of the little things that make life easier :)

  • How to Make a Piggy Bank   15 years 18 weeks ago

Teachers constantly share ideas from year to year, so it's no wonder it brought back memories! Pretty much any can, canister, jug, or jar can be turned into something useful.

Mason jars are the best. Last holiday season, I gave hot cocoa away in these jars as gifts to colleagues. These jars can be used for almost anything.

That's a great idea, too. I use my coin jar towards camping - at least it covers the groceries!

I like how your husband is using various canisters for the different coins. I'm sure it's a bit overwhelming, but it makes it easier to count! ;)

  • How to Find Time for Home-Cooked Meals   15 years 18 weeks ago

While I don't have kids to cook for, I usually cook in large quantities because friends and I trade meals regularly. We never return a container to the owner empty!

Everyone's heard of slow-cooker meals and breadmakers, I use both. I have one other shortcut you don't hear about so much - a programmable oven. First thing in the morning, I either put together what I want to bake (Mexican veggie-rice casserole, tamale pie, a whole chicken to roast or whatever) or take out what I put together the night before, then put it in the over and program it for the appropriate amount of time. I can go to the gym, shower, get dressed and never worry about listening for the buzzer or thinking to check to make sure something isn't cooking for too long. Just make sure you factor in the extra time the dish will cook while sitting in the hot oven once it turns off. If you have something that you are comfortable leaving at room temperature that you want ready when you come home from work (nothing with dairy in it, please!), leave the prepared dish in the oven when you leave for work with the oven programmed to turn on at the appropriate temperature/time for the dish to be done when you arrive home. If you don't know if your oven will do this, check it - my mother has an oven from the 70's that will turn off automatically, but you can't program it to start at a set time, so even that one is halfway there.

I have both. Some days the laptop is what I use and other days desktop.
Mostly desktop for the involved work

    Both!

I have a laptop that I couldn't live without. I use it for every day use, e-mail and web browsing, but I mostly use it for research as a graduate student. I would like to hook up this laptop to a larger screen, but other than that, I never miss the desktop. I love the keyboard on my laptop particularly. I can type incredibly fast with it. In a perfect world, I would have a tablet for taking to school when I need to work on it, because the laptop is somewhat heavy to carry around all day. But I am a confirmed laptop user since last year!!

  • How to Get Laid Off: A Step-By-Step Guide   15 years 18 weeks ago

I've been laid off before and it is awful...BUT my current job is slowly sucking the life out of me because my boss makes me cry and is slowly crushing my soul. Hence why I would actually want to be laid off at this point. Great tips! I think I'll try a few.

  • How to Throw the Most Fabulous (and Frugal) Baby Shower of all Time   15 years 18 weeks ago

I hosted my daughter-in-law's baby shower last year and everyone there said they hadn't had so much fun, which made me feel really good because I'd never planned a baby shower before. We all had a blast, even all the dads and the father to be had fun!

I made custom laminated bookmarks as a part of the little favors in the goodie bags that I handed out and everyone loved them. Bookmarks really do make cute and practical favors for baby showers because you can customize them in so many ways!

I have both a desktop and a laptop. I prefer to use my desktop when we watch media, such as streaming videos on Netflix or Hulu, or watching various network shows. I prefer to use my laptop on trips, such as when I am hiking or visiting family and friends.

Laptops only at home and work for several years now.

  • Ask the Readers: Desktop or Laptop?   15 years 18 weeks ago

I have both - the desktop is sort of my "server", and it's the storage machine for music, pictures, and other files. It's networked with the laptop, of course!

I have a desktop, and my daughter has a laptop. I like the desktop so much better. I bought a wireless mouse for the laptop, thinking I would like it better. I still hate it!

  • Homemade and Store Bought Mouse Trap Designs That Work   15 years 18 weeks ago

Make sure to check humane traps often - mice die very quickly if deprived of food and water. I used to work for a tech company and we had a mouse invasion. I set a couple of humane traps, and didn't cehck them over the weekend - it turned out that the dead mouse I found was a mother mouse had made a nest in someone's oatmeal packets.

Once the babies were located, I took them home and raised them until they were big enough to manage on their own. I am SUCH a sucker.

Desktop. I don't WANT to be connected wherever I go!

  • 7 Nutrients You Need More Of   15 years 18 weeks ago

This information should be taken with many grains of salt - no wait, that's too much sodium! :-)

Seriously, though, this sample daily eating plan might have the nutrients you need, but it is not at all good for most adults in the US. Most need to lose weight, and for women and most men 2123 calories daily will have them gaining it. I'm fairly active, as I go to the gym daily and dance classes 3 times a week, and I need about 1900 calories a day to maintain my weight, as I know from counting calories for many years. This eating plan would have me adding over 23 pounds a year!

Also , there are errors in the chart. 12 almonds (dry roasted, no salt) have approximately 92 calories, according to the UDSA calorie and nutrient website which you can find here: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/ 22 almonds (1 oz) have 169, but 12 almonds are listed as 169 in the sample plan. I happen to know the almond count because I eat 13 almonds daily (about 100 calories) as a snack. I checked on spinach - one cup raw or cooked? Raw has 7 calories per cup and cooked, drained, no salt has 41. The table lists 1 cup of spinach at 50. I wonder how many other mistakes there are that I don't have the time to check on?

I use only a laptop at home, and at work. I love the mobility.

My future son-in-law is in college. He fried his $1200 laptop by dropping a can of soda on the keyboard. He replaced it with a desktop, as with a desktop, replacing a keyboard is a cheap proposition. To me this sort of disaster is the only really good reason to own a desktop. As much as we know not to go near computers with beverages, we all do.

We have laptops in our home. I am amused at how my husband and I sit in the living room, each with our own laptops, reading the news online. A generation ago we would have been reading our own sections of the newspaper. I'm with the majority here in that I love laptops for their portability. Today I am online while I watch babysit my grandson, which I could not do if my computer was nailed down in a home office. My computer recently went to Canada to me. I use it in the kitchen when I am following an online recipe. I watch Netflix while I am sewing. I also watch Netflix when I am using my recumbent exercise bike (made a little shelf out of scrap wood that fits on the bike).

When I can't sleep at night I like to get up to read news, write in my journal or do other constructive things on my laptop... without waking other family members. When we had a desktop, it was kept in the room that doubled as a guestroom. It was especially inconvenient when I had insomnia on nights when I had guests and was unable to use the computer.

Laptop over Desktop any day. I work at my office, work at home, work at the coffee shop, work at the library all in one day!
