I disagree about the online application. If you sent me a fancy paper resume through the mail, I would think "(1) Why can't you read the directions? and (2) I hope you apply online, because I can't hire you unless you're in the system."

  • How to Raise Backyard Chickens   15 years 6 weeks ago

Linsey, with your chickens not being penned up, do you lose many to predators? Or do you have some sort of built-in alarm system (like a dog)?

I love chickens, but our current housing space would never allow us to keep them adequately. I can't even imagine the kind of security I would have to provide to keep raccoons out, either.

  • How to Find Time for Home-Cooked Meals   15 years 6 weeks ago

You can also consider what is coined "monthly cooking" where you take one weekend day and devote it to prepping yummy healthy meals which you then freeze and use throughout the month when you are low on time to cook from scratch.

There has been a petition in our city about this for what seems like forever. We'd love to have some chickens. Other municipalities near us allow chickens but the zoning rules are quite strict. Lots are usually 40'x110' and the zoning laws state you need to be 15' from either side of your lot and 25' from the front or back of your lot. This gives you a 10'x50' space to put a coop. A lot of peoples houses reside at this particular spot!

  • 5 Ways to Give Cash as a Gift   15 years 6 weeks ago

I have put cash inside clear puzzle boxes. Boxes made of plastic & wood that need to be manipulated in various ways to be opened. So one can see the money but one needs to solve a puzzle to get to it.

Or break the wood & plastic open. That works too.

Never had a problem with anyone refusing or being disappointed with a money gift.

  • Ask the Readers: How Do You Give to Charity?   15 years 6 weeks ago

We had the same problem. We budgeted a monthly amount but then something would come up that we would want to support and we'd either have to reduce support for our regular charities or blow our budget. This year when we were reviewing our budget, we added a small monthly amount of what we called "discretionary" charity money. If we don't use it one month, it rolls over for future donation.

  • 10 DIY Dog Toys You Can Make for Pennies   15 years 6 weeks ago

Interesting ideas. I do agree that with all toys, dogs will need supervision.
I think I would substitute garden hose with clear tubing that is found at home stores. (cheap) Garden hose often has lead in it and the clear hose used for drinking water or similar is available easily in different sizes and would be safe if a dog chewed on it. (Clear hose is usually found in the plumbing and is used for refrigerator or other water purposes)

  • 10 Outdated Job-Search Techniques to Avoid   15 years 6 weeks ago

This is the best comment ever posted on the topic of job searching ...Hiring mangers are incompetent and they have the greed mentality- just like any other person in power. They are the real problem and I wish someone would admit it vs putting the blame on the the unemployed person in search of work. I've been in touch with 5-10 hiring managers, and they all did not hold up to their promise, canceled interviews without notice, lied and say you're qualified for a job & lead you on,always emailing you stating how busy they were, and I thought most jobs wanted employees who can multitask?I guess that doesn't apply to people in HR.People do away with applying to big firms unless you know the HR person personally, they DO NOT care about you and your skill set.

Again, do not waste your time hunting down a number for someone in HR because they will never return your call. The only way I spoke to someone in HR is when the person in the company gave the HR person a heads up that I would be calling or sending an email, other than that, they would blow me over even with an inside referral.
I've decided to play around on the internet until I get another referral , I will not waste time applying for a job that I will never get-you look like a FOOL.

  • How Long Can You Stay in Your Home After You Stop Paying the Mortgage?   15 years 6 weeks ago

My wife and I don't think we are going to completely walk away, but was thinking of donig the following. Make long story short, both of us lost jobs, finally found new jobs, but with much lower pay. In order to get some higher interested (29.99%) credit cards paid off I was thinking of skipping a mortage payment. My plan is to never get behind more than 2 payments. Was thinking about doing this for about 3-6 months until I have 2 of the (29.99%) cc paid off. Do you think I have a pretty good chance to stay in my house as long as I never get more than 2 months behind? I live in CO.

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   15 years 6 weeks ago

I am quite offended by your comment, you state as if teenagers don't have the knowledge to handle money. I am 15 I don't handle money to much seeing as I don't have a job. But I got sent one of these netspend debit cards I was very confused and wary to put money onto this card. I went to my father he told me if I decided to activate it, it might come in handy. Still wary I went and searched articles, good reviews, and bad reviews. The good outweighed the bad I decided that my father was right and so were the people that said they had been using it for months even up to years. I had my father help set up the account and he gave me 150$ to start off. Ever since I have been depositing and spending money it has been 4months and still no problem with the card or my money. So if you want to take it from a 15 year old be my guest there is nothing wrong with this card it has been a great convenience for me.

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   15 years 6 weeks ago

I, too, had a horrible experience with this company. I purchased three of their prepaid Visa cards for my wife for anniversary, Christmas and birthday gifts. I was suipposed to go online to activate the cards, and being a novice at these type of cards, did so. I balked when asked for my SSN, though, as I really didn't see a need for them to have that info when I had already paid the $50.00 plus a $3.95 charge each to have the Visa gift card, or so I thought. I has taken me nearly two hours total on the phone, with me eventually always gtting to the pint of practically shouting on the phone to have them activated without my SSN so my wife could use them. It's been a horrible experience, and I would tell anyone to run, don't walk away from this company. Never, never, never again!

  • Big Changes to eBay That Will Make You Really Happy   15 years 6 weeks ago

Bidfunshop.com has had free auction listings (even on autos & homes) but at a much lower final fee percentage and they also have no final fees on anything under $8.00 so why is it when a larger corporation runs a [temporary] special, everyone gets excited? How long will this special last? Just like the other blogger pointed out, why are the store owners excluded?

  • Peak Debt and Income   15 years 6 weeks ago

Great article, Philip! I just finished rereading "What's the Matter with Kansas?". It is so frustrating to see working class families vote against their economic interests year after year, hoping for a different result. The government spending during the Great Depression was focused on projects that would last for generations - investments that are still paying dividends to our communities. I hope to see more agreement on those types of solutions rather than the current attempts to cut, cut, and cut education, public safety and social services.

  • Homemade Gluten-Free Trail Mix Bars for About 30 Cents Each   15 years 6 weeks ago

While these sound basically good, they have quite a bit of sugar in them! Do you know how many of those grams of carbs are just sugar? I wonder how these would be with about half the sugar/honey (or agave, maple syrup)? There is plenty of naturally-occurring sugar in the dried fruit.

I used to think Pabst was good for a cheap beer, but now I'm on the "Name Tag" bandwagon. It's less metallic tasting than Pabst and it's cheaper: $3 for a six pack at Trader Joes. Check it out.

This should be a huge improvement. I personally prefer Amazon, and have used them for selling items the past 5 years. I dont want to pay listing fees on items that may never sell, or will sell for only a few bucks.

  • The 7 Laws of Negotiation   15 years 6 weeks ago

When it comes to asking for a discount, you have nothing to lose. I've found that you can negotiate the price of just about anything. I even reduced my cable bill since I told them I was having a hard time paying the $80/mo. fee. They lowered it down to $65/mo. for 6 months.
