That one cannot discuss the history of women in 19th and early 20th century America without being attacked for doing so. It doesn't sound like you are attacking my review of the book or Ariel's research but the subject itself is what some are taking issue with. Interesting, to say the least.

Ok, so on the bottom of your foot there is this big muscle/bone/thing under your big toe. If you press really hard all around it, it heals your headache. And if you have someone do it for you, it is really relaxing. Laying down in a dark, quiet room seems to help too. Another thing to do is just massage your forehead, right in between your eyebrows. Hope this helps!

There is a lot I don't like about your review, but I want to focus on one thing - your apparent views about medication.

Now, I have no doubt that there are people who are being unnecessarily medicated. And I am also sure that many women have lived in circumstances (social and personal) that negatively affected their mental health. And while there are doubtless a self-help industry that capitalizes on people's unhealthiness, there is also a serious shortage of mental health services - either they are simply not available or people cannot afford services.

Now here is my point: Speaking as a woman with a long history of bipolar depression, I am here to tell you that there are a lot of people who take anti-depressants for excellent reasons that have nothing to do with achieving happiness. Sounds like you have been fortunate to have lived thus far without a major psychiatric illness, but a lot of us take meds because otherwise we would be unable to get up in the morning, look after our families, hang on to a job, stay solvent, and not piss off everyone who cares about us. Oh, and not kill ourselves. Meds can be a bit of a blunt instrument, and side-effects can be pretty bad, but they are often, quite literally, lifesavers.

I get really tired of people who trivialize serious psychiatric illness.

  • Review: Bluebird -- Women and the New Psychology of Happiness   16 years 13 weeks ago

Wasn't there a women's liberation revolution decades ago in America? What happened between then and now? Why is it that women still insist on playing victims when they cannot "find happiness"?

Oh wait, it must me "American psychology" that keeps you from "kissing the head of a baby and smelling in his scent, a hike in a favorite place, or an evening spent alone in a bath". Yeah. That's it.

"Are single mothers, feminist scholars, childfree women all destined to be unhappy? American psychology says yes...". Really? Could you provide a single shred of evidence about this "American psychology"? Because it seems to me that this country has taken a more empowering attitude toward women in the past 50 years than ever before. Women have broken through glass ceilings and, in fact, are now typically the bread-winners of their families.

Stop blaming some mythical "oppressive society" for your problems!

  • Review: Bluebird -- Women and the New Psychology of Happiness   16 years 13 weeks ago

If you are unhappy, it is the fault of society, who wants you to be happy only in the Great American dream. But happiness is such a personal thing, it has nothing to do with others.

I have dealt with bipolar disorder and it had nothing to do with society. It had nothing to do with my mind frame, it was a physical problem.

Something no one is willing to admit is that people in developing countries are happy to have the jobs that make this cheap stuff. We may get on our high horses and complain about how these poor people are being abused, but in reality, these jobs are frequently a boon to the communities they are in. I'm not talking about truly abusive situations, which do exist, but ones where the conditions, while not what we are used to, are acceptable to the local populace -- even child labor, though I know that makes a lot of people uncomfortable. It's just an economic fact that in some societies, children's economic contributions to the family finances remain vital. In the short term, all taking away their jobs would accomplish would be to further impoverish their families. It wasn't so different here not so long ago.

Frankly, I'm more concerned with what big box stores and diminishing manufacturing jobs in the States are doing to the fabric of our own communities.

  • Do What You Love: Idealistic Nonsense Or Good Advice?   16 years 13 weeks ago

We all have only one shot at this life and so it is extremely important that we spend our working life in a worthwhile manner thinking in terms of legacy. Life is like a storybook , with a beginning , a middle and an end. If we work on something we love then we can have the best of endings. The intrinsic reward of expanding our soul by doing what we love is reason enough. If it doesn't pay the bills then we should work out a strategy to set aside time for our real work while at the same time doing something we reasonably enjoy in order to pay our bills.

  • 44 Ways to Improve Your Health and Happiness   16 years 13 weeks ago

This is a wonderful list and these small things really do work! I've been using many of them in my life for awhile now and I really am happier and healthier - perhaps more than I've ever been before. Start by trying just one or two things. Many of these things just take YOU, with no place and/or no one else factored in. It's worth it! Thanks for a great reminder.

  • Ruthless Frugality   16 years 13 weeks ago

It doesn't always have the best prices, that's just propaganda. Many times local shops have better quality and better prices.

WalMart is a scourge on communities and our country. The stores are ugly and the clerks are dregs.

  • 44 Ways to Improve Your Health and Happiness   16 years 13 weeks ago

Good article. Sometimes when I notice I am not doing some of the above because I don't have time. I look at the things I probably should not be doing. I know that is where some of the time comes... to allow us to help ourselves.

Let's face it, the debt settlement companies would not be doing this if there wasn't enough money in it for them but there obviously is. I have no problem with that as long as they do a decent job and keep their customers interests at the very forefront of what they do.

If you try to buy most of your items second hand, you are usually buying from local people because most thrift stores, consignment stores, or garage sales are locally owned or locally franchised. My family does try to buy made in the USA and more enviromentally friendly when possible and it has actually decreased our costs because we refuse to purchase random stuff from China.

  • 44 Ways to Improve Your Health and Happiness   16 years 13 weeks ago

My first response to this list was: Well, no time for this, no time for that.

Actuallly, most of these thnigs could be factored into our daily lives with little extra time being spent.

These are all things that get lost in our busy, busy lives.

We should all realize that our lives will be more rewarding by incorporating some of these ideas into it.

  • $80 for an HDMI Cable? Give Me a Break!   16 years 13 weeks ago

I'm just now getting into audio sales and like some other people here, I have a bit of a guilt trip selling monster HDMI, I asked my manager what the best way to sell these cables was and he told me "recommend the 500 series for upconverting dvd players, the 700 for cable boxes, and the 800-1000 series for blu-ray" knowing full well the 500 series would handle blu ray just as well as the 1000 series. He adds "also ask them what the refresh rate of their tv is" I say "that doesn't even matter" he says "yeah, but they usually don't know that" pfft..

  • 44 Ways to Improve Your Health and Happiness   16 years 13 weeks ago

Agreed. It's much less stressful if you just let other people think what they want to think and leave it at that. I am someone who isn't motivated to argue in most cases, because most of the time the argument is over something stupid anyway.

    Fun list.

  • Ruthless Frugality   16 years 13 weeks ago

I picked up a nice, warm, practical fleece hoodie for my 8-year-old at the local thrift shop a couple of weeks ago and was dismayed to hear her say, "It's from the GAP, X-fashionable-girlie-neighbor loves the Gap, thanks Mom."

I then launched a discussion that the reason our family buys 95% of everything we need used (even occasionally if it costs more) is because those big-box and chain stores ship our jobs overseas and then hire little children the same age as her to work in dirty factories 16 hours a day to make our cheap clothing. I explained to her that, instead of going to school, these children have to work in terrible conditions to make that chain-store clothing for her to wear.

Sometimes ... when you can't find it anywhere else (largely because they've outsourced so much of our economy that no place else carries it) you have to go to Walmart. I NEVER have to go to a chain store. If I can't find it used, then I'll make it myself from scratch (preferably using base materials recycled from something I found from a thrift store, such as unravelling a wool sweater). I try to avoid designer logos, but these days it's all you can often find, so I focus on quality.

The point of all this is that, even if you're dirt poor, you can still beat "the man" by shopping for things second-hand or learning to make them yourself using reclaimed materials. If Scarlett O'Hara can do it, so can mainstream America. Going to Walmart to spend money you don't have on crap you don't need isn't frugal ... or ethical ... or necessary. It's all just Rupert Murdoch big-business-media-industrial-complex brainwashing.

Computer paper boxes are very strong, and they are uniform in size. I used the same set for 4 years of college & 2 years of grad school. If you work in an office you can get them. It's best to go to the computer room, where they use the most. And they are clean. The last time I moved I brought home 3 every day for 2 months. My roommate & I were both moving out and both had a lot of stuff. We did great.
