One other low cost solution that can help when your head is stuffed up is a netti pot! It's kind of gross, but works, and doesn't cost that much to use!

  • Should There Be a "Fat Tax" on Junk Food?   16 years 27 weeks ago

I might be in the minority here but I completely agree. There are nutritionists out there who could go through the fast food menus and make an informed decision at to what is and is not healthy enough to eat on a daily basis. I mean, if we can't eat it without adverse side effects I'd say it's easy to call it unhealthy. The tax money wouldn't just be sucked down the drain, it could be spent on other programs. Hopefully this would include a revision of our school lunch menus as well. Healthy eating would obviously benefit the nation as a whole. I see nothing negative enough to outweigh the potential benefits here.

Also, college students can buy milk, bread, peanut butter, flour, and other basic cooking supplies. Junk food IS NOT the only option. As a single mother enrolled in college I do understand stretching money. Perhaps we should be teaching wise consumer habits in our high schools instead of expecting everyone to learn at it home. When you do the math it's not hard to see that the dollar menu costs more than some other alternatives.

  • Should There Be a "Fat Tax" on Junk Food?   16 years 27 weeks ago

For the record, I think that another trillion dollars/year in the Federal government's coffers is another wasted trillion dollars. I also think that my personal choices should remain personal.

However, I am amazed that there is such strong resistance against a fatty food tax and there is almost no controversy regarding the tax on nicotine. It seems a hypocritical to support and depend on the tobacco tax revenue, but fiercely resist a tax on a vise that you personally enjoy.

There should be as much resistance to the tobacco tax as there is to a fatty food tax. BTW, the hurdles about what constitutes fatty foods are easily overcome. The fatty food tax would be simple to implement in an objectively measurable way. A calorie per gram or fat per gram threshold would be easy to include on existing nutrition labels and taxes could be based on "fatty zones" :-)

  • Should There Be a "Fat Tax" on Junk Food?   16 years 27 weeks ago

First off, these "fat" foods are usually the cheapest. Case in point- the dollar menu. If they are going to charge taxes on fatty foods, why not start a foi gras tax? That is the fatty liver of a duck, but since it is consumed primarily by the rich, I doubt we will ever see this happen. Quality food and vegetables cost money. I am not defending poor nutrition choices, but lets be real about who are the real consumers and who is really being punished/taxed here. When a McDouble costs a dollar and a sub alone costs five and you can barely pay for the gas to get to work where your not making much to start with, what choice will you make for something fast? Last time I checked the two most obese states were also the poorest and most medicated. Yes, in a perfect world this would stear them away from their poor choices, but this just smacks of rich America putting an economic squeeze on middle America to "do as we do". what would really make a difference is better school lunchs- I know first hand these are usually comprised of pizza and fries (but wait, the government says thats okay since they provide it) and Sodas being sold in schools (but that generates money for government institutions). I would also say better education on nutrition in schools would be a step in the right direction as well as making sure kids get running around time. It is insane that alot of schools no longer have recess with the burgeoning obesity and diabetes crisis. Lets leave the passive revenue driven changes behind and actually be proactive about national health.

I do not like to use over the counter or even under the counter drugs. I like to heal my body naturally. I like the ideas in this post and I will definitely bookmark this page for when my kids do get sick. Thanks.

    Maybe the DVDs are damaged.

  • Save Money on Shaving With These Razor Tricks   16 years 27 weeks ago

Leisureguy is right. When using a double edge Merkur razor, you only get to change the blade like after 10 shaves. Others use the same blade 50 times! Can you imagine how much you save when shaving with a Merkur razor?!
Wet-shaving also means less waste. Just think about all the non-recycleable plastic that goes into multi-blade cartridges and handles, and the aerosol cans that release harmful by-products into the environment. Switching to old-style shaving props won’t gain you entry into Green Peace by itself, but it is a good start.

  • When Should You Fire Your Real Estate Agent?   16 years 27 weeks ago

These are all good comments, and I'm sure there are many many multiples of each story. However, there really is a great way to locate a super efficient, and very market knowledgeable real estate professional. And, it didn't exist even 5 years ago.

As the Web has become the marketing venue with the most clout, and blogs have become the tool of many marketing-savvy real estate professionals, you can find one who knows what's going on in their market and can articulate it well. Just go to their websites, and not from paid results on Google. Use the free results.

Then, check out the content of their site. Is it the same old "use me I'm great" stuff? Is "Top Producer" mentioned multiple times? Are there a lot of photos of the agent/broker? Can you find relevant and up-to-date market statistics? In 95%+ of site visits, you won't find stats, and you will find plenty of the old marketing hype.

But, when you find a site with articles/blog posts about the business of real estate in that market, this is one you should look into further. Lots of statistics, sold property data, area and subdivision news and information, and common sense content about the process of buying and selling, title insurance, negotiations, repairs and other issues are what you should find.

This should indicate a real estate professional who values market knowledge, and wants to share it without hype or constant requirements to "register" to get your email address for marketing. The new breed of "professional" will offer valuable information without obligation, knowing that enough site visitors will appreciate it and give this person their business.

  • 3 Steps to Organize and Track Your Finances Without the Hassle   16 years 27 weeks ago

I don't understand my prospectus either. I do save them for a year in a file, by company. When the next year's (or next quarter's, for the quarterly stuff) I discard the previous one. That way I have it, just in case I suddenly figure out what I should be doing with it.

  • Should There Be a "Fat Tax" on Junk Food?   16 years 28 weeks ago

Wow, an extra tax on what you consider "junk food". Way to reduce people's freedom, discriminate and oppress the poor even more, all in one fell swoop!

Every now and then, I like to go out to eat. I can't afford the healthy things I'd LOVE to have (sushi!), so I make do with what I CAN afford: a burger from McDonald's or Burger King every now and then.

I'm thin and have a healthy BMI, BTW (exercise tends to do that). I don't need the government trying to nanny-law me over the head.

Oh, and Kay (comment #81), you don't sound like a liberal at all. You sound like a LIBERTARIAN. Maybe it's time to consider jumping parties? :)

  • The Ultimate Thrift Store: How Far Will You Go for a Bargain?   16 years 28 weeks ago

We have these stores in NZ (my local one is called Trash Palace) and I've picked up a few good things there, but there is a bit of a risk of taking home stuff you don't need, and it takes real skill to sort through and spot the good stuff.

If you like the concept of the "free store" in Maine - try Googling the words Skua Bin McMurdo. This kind of recycling is alive and well in one of the remotest places on earth. Of course it isn't very conveniently located for the rest of us!

  • 6 Options if You're Underwater on Your Mortgage   16 years 28 weeks ago

Kelja, many of us are military. Please think before you speak. We don't always get to choose where and when we go. We deserve to own a home, a home we were able to afford and have always been on time with payments by the way that is outside of our workplace (the base, post, etc.). The timing was just bad and the drop in the economy has coincided with many permanent change of stations. You're entitled to your opinion, but before you write us all off for idiots, these idiots are dying for and defending people like you.

I also ascribe to the frequent handwashing,(lots of hand sanitizer when soap and hot water is not available ) lots of water to drink, and keep a 6 foot boundary from anyone sneezing, coughing, or just looking lousy. I have had migraines but no other illnesses for years. And I work with children!

  • Outfit Your Nursery for Less: 10 Tips for Finding Low-Cost, High-Quality Things You Need for Your Baby   16 years 28 weeks ago

I just wanted to point out, buying a car seat from craigslist is a horrible idea, unless it is new in the box. The safety of your child depends on this device, and it is important for you to know your seat's history. I think ALL seat manufacturers recommend replacing the seat if in an accident, and if you buy a used seat, you don't know if it has been in an accident before, and therefore could pose dangers if that seat were in a second accident.

Craigslist is great for clothes and other gear, that's where I got nearly all of my baby items. BUT, I bought the car seat new.

  • 5 Websites for Swapping Your Clothes and Refreshing Your Wardrobe   16 years 28 weeks ago

  • 7 Cheap and Natural Ways to Fight the Cold and Flu   16 years 28 weeks ago

Both of those supplement and the herb speed wellness and stop cold starts. Viral illness like the flu they will help from additional infections and bolster the immune system. Zinc prevents cold germs/bacteria from being able to attach and form colonies within/on your body's mucous surfaces. And Echinacea helps your body's immune system by fighting germs through plant acids and provides basic plant supplied anti-oxidents.

The main reason I say grind or crush or dissolve much cheaper by the bulk pills you can buy at Walgreen or the nearest grocery-drug store. It cost 10-50 times as much for the locenges and other mixtures premade on the shelf.

  • Green Switch for Green Savings   16 years 28 weeks ago

As an electrical engineer I have to point out that every power strip I have ever seen has a fully mechanical switch that physically disconnects the outlets in the strip from the AC power in the cable. Once this circuit is broken, there is absolutely no power been consumed by the strip or anything plugged into it. I think using power strips to make it more convenient to turn off unnecessary gadgets is a good idea. If you don't believe me, go ahead and test this with a meter. Note that most multi-meters will show some apparently "phantom" current (thousandths or millionths of an amp), this is most likely electrical hum being induced on the meter leads due to proximity to other wires carrying current and DOES NOT represent "phantom" power being consumed.

  • 10 Life and Money Lessons Learned From Immigrant Parents   16 years 28 weeks ago

Apparently the US government is 14 trillion in debt, the highest level since 1946 {we had just finished paying for WWII}. I would say the bad old days are coming round again, and Americans should start living like immigrants to get by. Hard times are coming, I'm planning my house as a boarding house, a big vegetable garden, selling veggies at the farmers market, you name it. All you have to do is open the paper and you'll see the US economy is way off the rails and the people at the switch have no idea what they're doing. We're going to have to live like Dust Bowl survivors to get through the next ten or twenty years, mark my words.
