I have to say, it's great to be "prepared" and all, but I think the Type-A mentality towards a roadtrip just doesn't work. I say, have a general plan for different stretches (densely-populated v. rural, mountains v. open plains, hot v. cold, etc.). Beyond that, know where you're going, and leave the trip to spontaneity--that's half the fun of a trip. And if you can't deal with that, I probably wouldn't want to be in a car for more than an hour with you anyway...
IVE BEEN WITH NETSPEND FOR OVER 3 YRS, I OPENED IT TO USE FOR ONLINE PURCHASES. I RUINED MY CREDIT DUE TO A VERY BAD DIVORCE CASE. IT CAN BE EXPENSIVE, 2-5 DOLLARS TO RELOAD, 1 TO USE, OUCH!!! BUT MY DAUGHTER LIVES 200 MILES FROM ME AND IM A TRUCK DRIVER (48 STATES) AND I GOT HER ONE AND SO I CAN TRANSFER $ ONTO HER CARD, AT NO COST, BUT THEN SHE GETS HIT WITH 1 CHARGES FOR HER PURCHASES. WALMART HAS COME OUT WITH THE SAME SCAM. BUT PEOPLE WITH BAD CREDIT, ( AND THE LIST IS GROWING HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE ) THE GOOD THING IS YOU CANT OVER-DRAFT AND CANT BE HIT WITH BANKS O-D FEES (35-39 A POP) AND THE IDENITY THEFT ISSUE DOES NOT EFFECT ME BECAUSE I LOAD MONEY AND THEN USE IT ALMOST IMEDIATLY
I also cheat. I use the left over juice from commercially made picles. I collect and refridgerate the juice in 64oz washed plastic fruit juice bottles, and when I have enough home grown fresh pickeling cucumbers ( or store bought in the winter time )I make them by the gallon. I leave the cucumbers whole. I use store bought pickling spices and and fresh Jalapeno peppers to taste. Usually 2 peppers per gallon..They are ready in 3 to 4 weeks in the fridge. Really works very well and fooled a few relatives into thinking that they were the old fashioned work of labor!
To me, walking is free exercise. I park far from the door to the office, and I always take the stairs. I find that a trip up and down the stairs wakes me up when I'm feeling sluggish.
Or another option (if possible) is to pay all of your bills online and just have friends and family send you email or IMs to talk. Since closing my mailbox (accept for the P.O. Box, which does not get junk because I only give it to my clients) I have had significantly less mail. I also live in an apartment so I opted out of receiving mail by just contacting my manager and the local post office. It's a lot less digging and sifting through mail and a lot less headache.
Evolutionary advantages of laziness - that is, conserving energy - aren't really an issue for most of us any more. Technology has brought everything we need closer and made it almost disgustingly easy to sit on the couch and watch TV all night.
Cidre - that's definitely a situational thing. There's little fear of cars ramming you if you're on a sidewalk, and there are very few neighbourhoods in my community where I would feel uncomfortable walking at night.
It's interesting to hear about the "fear factor" of traveling without reservations. Honest to god, most years I'm on the road 3-6 months out of the year (in the U.S. and abroad), and I can count on one hand the number of nights I've made advance hotel reservations (and those are usually cases when someone else is paying the bill and so they make a reservation for me). That said, I've never, even once, been unable to find a place to stay, and I usually land the lowest possible price, because I can talk to manager/clerk directly about discounts, etc. and I/they know that the room is likely to be vacant that night if they don't rent it to me. Give it a try sometime and you might be surprised ... it's not only possible, but it's so liberating to not be locked into having to be some specific place at some specific time when you travel.
We lost our car almost a year ago and my hisband hours were cut, so getting a car just wasn't going to happen! we walk anywhere we are going!
Now, I have my dad's bike and we are a riding family of 6. I feel like we have more freedom because we are not tired to having to live around having a car. We have freedom because we are making a differece, people notice us, because we walk/ride our bikes all the time!
Does anyone have any idea how to hack the DVD players in a MacBook? Or should I just take it into the Genius Bar for some help? I'm starting to get annoyed with the fact that I bought an expensive computer and can't even watch movies on it.
Thanks for sharing such great post, according to me budgeting doesn't mean that you have to compromise your needs but it is important for planning financial life. Household Budgeting means to create a planning for the money spending. Build emergency fund, minimize the use of credit card, planning, etc. are the tips for making personal household budgeting. Regarding Boingo hotspots; this isn't a free solution but it's handy. If you have the most recent version of Skype for Mac, you can use Skype credits to access Boingo hotspots.
It can save you some money; with the Skype credits you pay by the minute, instead of having to buy a block of time from Boingo that you might not use up.
Ive had to use a netspend card for about a year now. I can't get a checking account right yet because I am going through a divorce and my husband ran up rubber checks and before i knew it the account was closed and sent off to collections. But anyways, I haven't had that much of a problem with netspend. The only issues that i don't agree with and wish would be changed (but i know they won't because it's all about the money) is they charge you a fee to put money on your card. I don't agree with that. It's your card and your money why should you be charged to add money to it. Then you get charged a fee each month. As soon as my situtation gets better I will be going through a regular bank and will close out my netspend.
Last time I went a-walking I nearly got taken out by a car.
Anyway, this is a good list but I think you need a bit more. Namely, if you're going to walk, make sure you're safe. I don't care if you're male, female, old, young, whatever. Anyone can become a victim of a crime. Parking at the far end of the mall might be okay in the daytime, but at night in the middle of winter? Get your ass close to the doors. Maybe I'm just paranoid because it's not uncommon where I live/work to be mugged and a friend of mine was raped, but paranoia saves lives. And you should NEVER EVER EVER be plugged into a mp3 player or a phone while walking. You can't hear cars, or someone coming up behind you.
My wife and I both lost our teaching jobs this past year due to budget cuts in CA. Our student loan debt (combined, about 90K) seems like a horrible investment in our futures.
I can't tell you how many times I've been stuck in an airport refusing to pay for service... especially Hartsfield in Atlanta, but also Texas in a few others. I hope they all have these sorts of promotions!
I have the pine nut thing right now. We eat a lot of home-made pesto. I just wrote to Whole Foods to find out where they buy their store-brand pine nuts. It doesn't say on the bag. This has been driving me nuts, this awful taste, but I am relieve to know that it is no big deal and relieved I won't need to spend scads of time and money on doctors and tests.
I switched to distilled vinegar and water as our all purpose cleaner. It works great. It also cleans glass better than glass cleaner. We also use microfiber cloths instead of paper towels. The combination does a great job.
2 of those huge jugs of vinegar at Sam's Club is under $3.
@James - Thanks for the second of Dave's recommendation. I'll try Gazelle the next time I have something to recycle!

Will this tonic kill weeds? Can you use this instead of regular fertilizer and weed control. I currently have a service that applies 4-6 times a year.
How often should this be applied?
How many ounces of the ammonia, dish detergent, and mouth wash?
I know that is 1 can of beer and 1 can of coke.

The ONLY thing I want to do is stop getting DISCOVER CARD applications! Every year I get 20 or more - for many many years!

Nora, could I request a list for Canadians?
It's so detailed, but it doesn't seem to work for me or others in Canada.
Thanks

Can I fill out these no-mail, no-call requests for an elderly family member who lives on their own?
