  • Making Every Penny Count With A Zero-Based Budget   18 years 13 weeks ago

    Hey!
what you have said is sooooo insightful. Actually it is also my principle to save every penny that counts!

    Thanks!

  • Bush's economic stimulus package; What will you get back?   18 years 13 weeks ago

I think that even us savers will spend a good amount of the money.  And for those of us who aren't using credit to buy everything, but instead wait until we have the cash saved to make that special purchase, this will put us way ahead of schedule.  We have several vehicle repairs and remodeling projects that have been put on hold.  This family, who saves first before anything else, will enjoy spending something for a change!

  • Tasty, Healthy Breakfast Cookies With Chocolate-Covered Espresso Beans   18 years 13 weeks ago

Made these tonight with my 2 1/2 year old -- we both realy liked them. ("Cookies" are an easy sell, even if they are healthy). Based on the consistency, I think you could spread these into a cake pan (thinly), bake, and then cut into "bars" to get something more like commercial breakfast bars.

The cinnamon made the taste, btw. And smelled wonderful cooking.

Did anybody else notice that the raosted scorpions are "smokey bbq" flavor? That must make them *extra* tasty

We all could use a healthy "slush fund" couldn't we? :) And I agree - it really helps you leave the savings account alone.

  • Making Every Penny Count With A Zero-Based Budget   18 years 13 weeks ago

My husband and I did a version of this. We calculated out our expenses, income, and savings, and the leftover (around $100 or so dollars) we called "slush fund" and left it alone to cover overages in other areas. Really helped us not dip into the money dedicated for savings.

It's a snack in S. Korea, apparently sold on the streets like peanuts or pretzels in the USA. I have a cousin who teaches English in Korea (incidentally, private schools in Korea have TONS of time off for all those legislators out there who are saying Americans are school slackers) and was home visiting. He brought some with him and boiled them - smelled awful. The taste was pretty non-existent but there was this crunch and the knowledge that you were eating silkworm maggots that made it pretty gross. Good thing my aunt and uncle had a mint patch in their yard - MINT IS SOME GOOD STUFF.

Dude, you love Spam Musubi?  I think I just love you a bit more now Paul.  Oh, cow and pig tongues are delicious if you aren't disgusted by the fact it probably used to produce a lot of saliva.  I haven't eaten pig or cow brain, but I am a fan of fish and chicken brains.  I am disappointed that you didn't find a picture of canned dog meat. When I was young my dad gave me some and it was actually pretty good.

  • Bush's economic stimulus package; What will you get back?   18 years 13 weeks ago

The thing is, I don't think everyone will go out and spend it, so I don't know how much this "stimulus" would actually stimulate the economy.  A lot of people my local TV station surveyed said that they will save the money.  I may save mine too.

  • Bush's economic stimulus package; What will you get back?   18 years 13 weeks ago

It's actually beneficial to the economy for us to spend the money, because right now spending is down - that's why we are having these economic problems. As a result of the mortgage crisis, people aren't spending as much, so the economy is doing badly and we are facing the possibility of going into a recession (or already are!) Thus as far as I know, the point of this is to stimulate the economy on a macro scale... not give us all back our money from getting into mortgage problems or help people on an individual scale.
Otherwise, thanks for the info! It's very helpful.

I believe I read that you would get $300 per child up to 2 children... I think it is a $600 limit.

  • Did I Choose the Wrong Profession?   18 years 13 weeks ago

My father was a sculptor. You don't really make a living at that. My mom's counsel to us was, do what you love as long as it's legal and you can earn a living by it. I got a three year professional degree in graphic design, loved the classes, and loved working in the field. That kind of payback carries alot of weight. If your job just means a paycheck, that's 40 hours a week wasted. And it's a shame.

I suspect cow brains are not allowed due to mad cow disease. Still, eating brains is something I'll have to try once..."Brains in Black Butter!" (If you know the movie, I applaud you...one of my faves.)

  • Blergh! Could you eat these strange canned foods?   18 years 13 weeks ago

Here in the southern US, pork brains are an old-fashioned country delicacy. You scramble them up with eggs. (No I am NOT kidding.) The smell is indescribable -
but still not as bad as chit'luns!

  • Keeping Your Head (when all around you are losing theirs)   18 years 13 weeks ago

Ronni--I guess I would come down on the side of not wanting to work for someone who wouldn't respect the truth, but then again, I have this sometimes-excruciating love for truth.

Patti--I suppose it depends on how much you need the job. If I had to lie to keep one, I hope I would leave!

    Thanks for the comments!

As far as being honest goes though, I'd would definitely take the circumstances and the boss's character into consideration. If you have a boss from hell, being honest could end up backfiring. Discretion is imperative.

I loved your article, though and learned a lot from it. Thanks!

I too have eaten haggis from a can before, and while not as tasty as fresh from a butcher, it's still pretty good. The curried crocodile looks delicious, I've tried crocodile before and it was pretty tasty and as a fellow Brit I can agree that everything tastes great in a curry! I really couldn't manage the fish mouths though.

I think Dale also makes an important point. And it raises the question: who do you think is paying for the food that gets thrown away? If a store isn't making enough money, they don't just say "oh well." After all is said and done, they are in business to make a profit, not break even. So they raise their prices or they go out of business.

Food that is thrown away IS paid for.

  • Frugal Music Options Fade   18 years 13 weeks ago

I've been using emusic for a couple of years, and have grown to really like it. Yes, they don't have the big-name labels. You know what? Mostly, I don't miss them. I'm having a great time mining the fringes, and I'm finding music that speaks to me, that is just as good or better than the stuff on the big labels. I've got to work a little harder at finding it, and sometimes you really can't tell whether you're going to like someone from 30 second samples (which emusic provides for free), but at something like $15 for 80 downloads a month (YMMV, I've got a "legacy" rate), I can afford a few clunkers.

What's been really fun, and which has happened to me several times, is to discover someone on emusic, and then to have them show up on the radio months later. Makes me feel like I'm on the cutting edge!

I've been in quite a few dumpsters and I've never seen a cockroach or a rat. Not saying it doesn't happen, but it has never been my experience.

Like Dr. Zaeus, I ate better when I was dumpster diving. At the house there was just about always a counter full of fresh fruits and vegetables, many of them organic. However I also took meat and cheese, but I was careful about that; if there was ever any question about it, then out it went. There is just nothing like coming home with 18 pounds of 90% lean ground beef or 6 pounds of beef tenderloin.

I think that kweeket, ComidaBuena and Guest (you wouldn't take free food) make some excellent points.

    darrendloux,
I agree, a lot of places/people are lazy.

I worked in restaurant that made a pretty good loaf of focaccia bread and it was quite popular. Some days they would have a couple of (large brown paper) bags of the stuff left over, and since they didn't need any more for making croutons they would just throw it out. Now, there was a homeless vets shelter about a two minute drive down the road, so I would let people know that if I was around don't throw the bread away because I would bring it to the shelter. Everybody knew where the shelter was, and they knew that they were glad to get it, but if I wasn't around, NOBODY ELSE would bring it there. And doubtless there were people who drove right by the shelter, but they didn't want to bother! In fact, some people didn't even want the hassle of having to let me know that there was bread for me to take over there! So yes, I would say that there is a TREMENDOUS amount of apathy and "don't bother me" going on.

  • How to hire employees   18 years 13 weeks ago

While I agree with the premise, I'm also concerned that following this approach makes it easy to fall into discriminatory hiring. Will we mix up "like to work with" with "looks like me", for instance?

I don't know the answer. I'd be interested in hearing how others might deal with this potential problem.

  • Keeping Your Head (when all around you are losing theirs)   18 years 13 weeks ago

Hmm, for #4, I've seen people tell the truth and get sacked for it.

From what I've seen, it's best to lie and make yourself look as good as possible, and if you can take someone else down while doing it, all the better.

I'm quite cynical about the working world, if you can't tell. Heh.
