It does appear to contain a lot of unsubstantiated facts and pseudoscience.

If you don’t have two hours to wait for the dough to rise, several grocery stores now sell prepared pizza dough. It usually costs about a dollar. Trader Joe’s sells regular pizza dough as well as whole wheat. I like to make homemade pizzas with pesto sauce (so good).

my entry is not only for the contest but also to share this wonderful secret that has served me so well for over a decade...i use it on myself and my children...i would never ever buy anything else to deep condition my hair but this...It is in my oppinion the best deep conditioning hair treatment ever!

i have very long dark hair that occasional gets brittle and drab.
I find if i microwave an 1/8 a cup of cheap olive oil~you might use a few table spoons/my hair is almost down to my waist! (just a few seconds)I then apply it to dry unwashed hair and wrap my hair in a bun with a rubber band (or washable scrunchi) i then procede to pull off big sheets of aluminum foil and cover my head with it...pressing it into place with my hands until i have what look likes a silver cap on my head. then i put a disposable plastic shower cap or a grocery bag on top of that....i then leave it on either 4 hours while i clean the house and cook or during the 8-9 hours i sleep..the longer the better!.afterwards i wash my hair. my hair always appears fuller/softer and a bit darker and richer...i have done this for years...i have a friend who does hair who tells me this sounds similar to those fancy deep conditioning treatments you can have done at a salon....the olive oil is really great for the hair, any extra can be rubbed into my feet prior to putting socks on and into my cuticles and hands..the foil and shower cap creates heat so the oil sinks deeper into the hair strand and the scalp! just remember you could clean them and reuse them to save more money if you wish.

let me also mention everything i used from the oil/the foil/the disposable shower cap even the scrunchi were all bought at the dollar store! for a whole whopping $4 i can get several (normally at least 8) hair treatments which amounts to about 50 cents each..versus the $20 or even $100(per treatment) you could spend at a salon or even a spa for the same exact thing just a bit fancier. (if you have shorter hair, you could get more treatments out of the oil, but you'd have have to reuse or replace the foil.)
at just $4 for 8 treatments at home versus $160-$800 for 8 treatments at a salon or spa (higher number being the spa)that is quite a savings!

Let me also mention i do this at least once month but you can do it twice if you like...and that this is the only hair conditioning treatment i use for my hair because it not only works the best but it is so cheap its humourous.
***Let me also mention i have black/brown hair and my girls have light brown hair...i have no idea if it would darken red or blond hair. just being honost..if you have light hair or dyed hair you may want to try it on a small patch or hair first before doing it everywhere. but the darkeneing is not permenant..it lasts me a month or so...so coincidently i don't have to color my hair either.
I love this hair treatment its amazing how well it works.
also thou i cannot garentee you wont have an allergic reaction...i strongly doubt it... we all have sensitive skin, my youngest daughter even has eczema and none of us have ever had an issue...
    ***enjoy :)

Actually, we just modified this recipe: http://webesharin.wordpress.com/2007/06/01/dry-mix-recipes-pizza-dough/ and substituted half the white flour for wheat. We've been quite pleased with the results. You can let it rise for up to a half hour, but if you are going for a thin crust, just go for it right away. It's still acceptable.

Also, Thursday, I'm so impressed you precook your pizza sauce. I'm usually lazy about it and just mix puree with Italan seasoning. But for a gourmet touch, yours sounds interesting.

We had a Philly Cheesesteak pizza once, with green peppers and beef and cheese and a very nice white sauce. I'd love to make pizza at home, but my son is sensitive to tomato so it's not been a good option. A good white cheese sauce would make it possible, though. Does anyone have one that they've used successfully? :)

  • Pessimism Pays - Why Expecting the Worst Can Save You Money   18 years 15 weeks ago

I think worrying is unhealthy and can take you on a downward spiral into anxiety, depression, unnecesary fear. There's a reason the Bible tells us not to worry. However, thinking of things and preparing for the unknown is great. Isn't there a difference? Can't there be balance here? Tomorrow may not come, so don't worry about what tomorrow could bring...but be prepared!

Anyone have a recipe for a wheat pizza dough?

  • The one website everyone needs to read (apart from WB of course)   18 years 15 weeks ago

I was clued in to News Target a few years ago, and I basically use it to get the goods on "super" foods that are not mainstream-quinoa, spirulina, chlorella, that sort of stuff. Having read a LOT of his articles, I noticed that he is as left wing as you can get. Also, he writes the majority of the articles, and often quotes himself. Um... ??? Not really impartial. The articles are often poorly written and repetitive. Take everyting wtih a grain of salt. Having said that, perhaps this article's author should have done a bit more research... ;)

Just one tip... I would add a tsp of sugar to the sauce when cooking it.

This isn't one that I made up - it is in the Betty Crocker? cookbook. The red and white checked cookbook.

I've used this recipe tons of times - very easy.

    3-4 cups flour
    1 Tbls sugar
    1 tsp salt
    1 package of rapid-rise yeast
1 cup of water (between 120 and 130 degrees)
    3 Tbls olive oil

Mix 1 cup of flour, the sugar, salt, and yeast. Start mixer and add hot water and oil. Mix on medium for a minute. Then start adding the flour and keep mixing until the dough no longer sticks to sides of bowl.

Place dough on floured surface and knead for 5 minutes. Since I use a stand mixer with a dough hook, I rarely need 5 minutes to knead.

Place dough in slightly oiled bowl and cover in a warm area. The 'proof' option on my oven is fantastic for this. Let rise for 30 minutes or until doubled in size.

Punch down dough and split into 2 for pizza or 6 for calzones.

For pizza, shape into a pizza pan and bake it without toppings for about 10 minutes at 375 degrees. Then add toppings and bake for 10 minutes.

For calzones, I just roll out the dough to 10 inch circles and fill and fold them over. This is easier and more time effective than pizzas, so I usually make calzones more than pizza. Bake at 375 for around 15 minutes.

For better presentation and crispier calzones, I put an egg wash on them and sprinkle with salt, Italian spices, parmesan cheese, and fresh ground pepper. It makes them all golden and delicious.

I will have to try the pizza sauce, I hate buying the expensive cans. I would also suggest buying your yeast in jars if you do a lot of baking. I think they keep better than the packets and are more economical.

Hey! I make homemade pizza all the time and I make it the way my family made it in Italy/Mediterranean area. It is a thin crust, we usually make a thick dough for focaccia type breads.

    Here's the recipe:

7 oz(not quiet a cup) of good white bread flour
    1 tsp. sugar
    1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 oz yeast(usually one of those packets)
3 oz milk (not quiet a 1/2 cup)
    1/3 cup warn water

in bowl mix flour, sugar, salt, yeast. Add milk and water, stir mixture.

Place on floured surface and knead 5 min. or so. Add more flour if too sticky while kneading.

Form into a ball and place in a bowl lightly coated with olive oil. Let it rise for 1 hr.

After it rises, roll it out on a floured surface.

Bake at 400 degrees-I use a pizza stone and I also take olive oil and drizzle it on the dough before I add sauce.

It makes a medium pizza, but by some might say it is a small. It is perfect for 2 people.

    Enjoy!

On a second note. The time you wait for delivery is not working for your argument. Your dough takes 15 minutes prep time, 2 hours to rise, plus 15 minutes to cook. That is more than double (almost triple) the time commitment of either delivery or frozen. That's a little more than "marginal". I get the money savings, but where does the time come in at, outside of planning ahead?

  • Fast and Easy Pizza Dough and Sauce   18 years 15 weeks ago

$30.00 for pizza delivery for 2? While I can see this price for gourmet pizzas in certain locations, this is FAR from the norm. As for frozen pizza, I've never seen anything over $10.00 in any market. Unless you are including your "time" waiting, these prices are way overblown. I get the point you are trying to make, but at least use realistic prices.

I'm a little disappointed---I've read about the study linking parkinson's and dairy consumption, but they fail to mention that it's homogenized milk. Milk that is chemically unrecognizable by our bodies, because it's over-processed.

I doubt that milk itself is the culprit.

  • Save up to 20% on Gas   18 years 15 weeks ago

I'm not so sure I agree with that 20% extra fuel consumption using the air conditioner. It would all depend on your driving habits. I've tracked this before, and at highway speeds the difference is only a few percent at most. Mythbusters actually did a good test of this quite a while ago at highway speeds.

News target mentions the fact that ACE inhibitors cause a 270% increase in birth defects when taken by expectant mothers under its "Shocking facts" section. I wouldn't call this a shocking fact, because this is common knowledge in the medical community. ACE inhibitors are "Pregnancy Category X" and therefore should never be given to women who are pregnant. IF common medical practice was to give ACE inhibitors to pregnant women, then this would be a shocking fact.

Something else that really helps get a good pizza is to use a pizza stone. We use about six unglazed terra cotta tiles from the big box home improvement store. We also use them to bake breads, it helps with the texture and crust. We bought a wood pizza paddle for $9 at a kitchen gadget store, it helps get the pizza transferred.

On some advice we started using a really good quality bread flour for pizza dough and it did make a difference in texture.

After reading through many of the articles I was surprised at how poorly written the articles were. The articles are filled with misinformation and lack hard facts. For example the piece on kosher meat being healthier, the author claimed " Additionally, kosher animals are young animals and so are less likely to contract diseases such as Mad Cow Disease." This is simply NOT TRUE!!! Mad cow disease is caused by little prions who could care less about age. The credibility of that site is suspect to me. Side note, I love your site and preach it to everyone I know. :) Raj
