  • I'm Fleeing The Country For Healthcare!   18 years 20 weeks ago

Thanks for your interest. The procedure itself will be posted on Healthcare Hacks just as soon as I find out the specifics for my treatment. Each person is different and the doctor will determine what's best for me. The theory behind how it could help Lyme Disease is to first, strengthen my overburdened immune system so it can fight some of the bacteria on its own; and second, for the stem cells to regenerate or repair the damage to my nerve, tissues, etc. Stay tuned...more to come.

  • "I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!"   18 years 20 weeks ago

I hate going to the grocery store more and more. But what I REALLY hate is our local Kroger store in this little town of Palestine, TX will run an ad with a really good deal on meat (or whatever...but especially meat) and you go in to buy some and they are out! I get SO mad! I have written the company and got a response from the local Asst. Mgr., but to me that is bait and switch too. They bait you in the store with a really good deal on steak or HB meat or whatever and you end up either not buying that item (because they don't have enough to last for the duration of the sale) or end up buying something else that is NOT on sale and spending more money. This seems to happen nearly every week, and it isn't limited to just meat either.

  • 5 Cool DIY Christmas Gifts for the “Under 6” Crowd   18 years 20 weeks ago

This is a great article to help parents occupy children 6 and under years of age but most of these require supervision. There are often times during the holidays when parents need a half hour or hour of uninterrupted time to get things done and I have an excellent suggestion for parents in this situation. There is a wonderful gift item on the market now. It is called the Original Christmas Classics and it is a Limited Keepsake Edition. It contains all the wonderful Christmas Classics we parents grew up on during our Christmas’s like Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, and Santa Clause is Comin’ to Town. There are 4 other movies included and a bonus music CD as well. This is a Great bargain for all ages. You can purchase it wherever DVD’s are sold or you can use the convenience of online shopping by going to http://www.christmasclassics.tv
This great gift is sure to delight everyone at your Holiday gathering and be sure to buy extras as emergency gifts to households with kids that you may have forgotten on your list. I work for them and I personally can’t wait to buy my own copy and wax nostalgia with my honey and a hot of cup cocoa. Enjoy your Seasonal festivities with the gift of warm fond Christmas memories with your family today.

Percentage raises compound over time. I would never turn down an increase, even if I lost ground temporarily. It will be worth it in the long run.

Unless they let me go because I make too much...

  • How to Erase Your Medical Debt   18 years 20 weeks ago

There are options available when dealing with a hospital or your insurance company. A patient advocate may be exactly what you need to fight the battles on your behalf. It is like hiring your own experts in the field to represent you to the medical providers or insurance company. Talk to them first and feel comfortable with your representation!

My hubby did this for our boys.  4 years later it is still one of our FAVORITE toys!

  • Seven Tax-Efficient Perks to ask your Employer For   18 years 20 weeks ago

These are great ideas -- you could also use them in initial salary negotiations and when something may be changing about your job (perhaps your boss wants you to relocate and you can get some extra perks to make the transition go more smoothly).

I am typically in the "more money is better" camp but I like Nora's mention that you may need to consider ramifications. For instance, I once advocated for an employee to get full-time status; what I (and she) didn't realize was that she was living in government-subsidized housing (across from the area community college) and her rent bill went from something like $25 to $400 (I don't remember the exact number but do remember thinking, did you not know that $25 wasn't a standard market rate -- these were fairly nice apartments). She was from a rural area and didn't really have any comparisons; to boot, she had been sending money to her parents, which abruptly ended. So, her status improved but her cash flow suffered.

cut from scraps and sanded nicely. You can make tons from one or 2 two by fours. Cutting some squares, rectangles, arches in the rectangles and such make it more interesting.

FlatGreg, what you say is true.  However, once you move up the tax bracket, I believe you begin to lose different deductions.

  • Seven Tax-Efficient Perks to ask your Employer For   18 years 20 weeks ago

"sometimes a small raise to the next tax bracket can even mean less take-home pay than before."

How so? Say your salary increases, and 1k of your new salary ends up being in a higher tax bracket. Not all your income is taxed in the new bracket, just that 1k. Or am I missing something?

  • Live like royalty on $20,000 a year   18 years 20 weeks ago

Yeah, "last day to live" is one question to ask yourself. But if you lived every day like it were your last, you'd never save; you'd never build for a long-term goal.

Where I find the sweet spot is thinking, "What if I found out I only had 5 years to live? What if it were 10?" That gives me some scope to build for the future, without spending most of my life waiting for it to start.

If I were only going to live 5 or 10 years, I'd spend my life exactly as I'm spending it now--as a full-time writer. If I only had one day to live, I might do something wildly impractical that I'd enjoy--and I still do such things, but I also want to do things that I'll look back on and say, "That was a worthy way to spend a day," instead of just "Wow, that was fun."

  • "I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!"   18 years 20 weeks ago
    WOW

You have opened my eyes. I will have to check out the things I bought on sale next week. I am sure that it is happening here in Michigan too. Grrrr... I know that being frugal is not easy, but I am so sick of having to watch every little thing. I can't wait for your comparison.

I once had a friend whose mother actually weighed her products when she got them home and found that FREQUENTLY the ounces did not match the ounces printed on the box or can. She would call the company and let them know and they would say "it must have settle with shipping. As you know, that would only effect the density not the weight. DUH!!!

I have a price book going, but have just realized that I have only put best sale prices in and not regular prices. Thanks for the heads up!!!

  • Holiday Gift Giving Techniques   18 years 20 weeks ago

I actually have a friend who categorically insists on celebrating CHristmas on Dec 28th. This allows him to shop for everybody on Dec 26th and take advantage of those holiday steals.

Maybe we can all petition to change Christmas....but just not let the retailers in on the plot....

I'm so pleased that people are re-examining their existing policies now that you are primed about the finer points. It pays to know exactly what you have, and not to rest on laurels of coverage that may be inappropriate.

And Guest, it is because I have heard too many stories like yours that I was inspired to write this article. Thank you for sharing your story.

  • Live like royalty on $20,000 a year   18 years 20 weeks ago

The question I keep asking myself is "if this is the last day I have to live, is there anything I wish I had done"? The "aha" moment came for me when I realized I would never say I wished I had spent more time in the office.

So I got rid of the office job and started chasing dreams! I haven't looked back, despite some sacrifices like Martha (read: more rice & beans, and a lot less lobster & caviar)!

  • Live like royalty on $20,000 a year   18 years 20 weeks ago

I know from experience how hard it is to get past the "just a bit more of this stuff I don't like, and then I'll be able to focus on what I'm really interested in" thing. It's a very easy trap, in part because there's a certain amount of truth to it--it really is possible to save your way out, if your earnings are high enough and your standard of living is low enough. The personal finance magazines have stories about people who have succeeded in nearly every issue.

Part of the solution is to do the thinking first, rather than after. What really mattters to you? A serious illness often catalizes that thinking process, but people don't have to wait for one. They can think any time they want.

    Thanks for your stories!

my epiphany also came about because of cancer. After getting through surgery and treatments I just wanted everything to be the same as before (homelife, worklife, etc.). Then, with a little perspective gained through time, I began to wonder: if my cancer came back, would I be sorry or pleased with how I had spent my time since the initial cancer experience? The answer to that question has since guided my actions. Now I work part-time from home because I would have regretted every crappy minute I spent at my highly paid, highly stressful job. I pick up my daughter from school every day and we sing songs and memorize poetry together. I cook dinner (lots of beans and rice w/o aforementioned highly paid job) with a glad heart instead of rushing through to get food on the table. I am grateful every single morning: not that I had cancer, but that I am alive, that I know what's important to me, and that I have been frugally enough to be able to live my choices.

Thanks for the comments and ideas.

Some companies have formal mentor relationships but your mentor doesn't necessarily have to be a higher-up at your company. You might find people (older friends or younger friends with expertise in certain fields) who can give you advice or guidance -- and you can create a composite mentor: that is someone you admire for their leadership; another who is good with supervising people; and still another who has strengths in your career field.

I've never heard of the crayon creation -- sounds great and I wish I had known that one when my kids were small, and breaking crayons regularly. You also reminded me of my candle-making venture with a childhood friend. We melted crayons to color candle wax and then sold the candles door to door (note, this is not necessarily a great business idea but we did have fun!).

I think children like opening up the gifts. A lot of the times I think you could wrap up empty boxes and they would be excited, haha.
