What I like the most about all of these homemade gift ideas is that they are interactive. And that pumpkin pie play dough idea in the pie tin is adorable!

I've found the key to workplace success is to do the jobs that no one else wants to do--and do them well.

Even if you're working at a crappy company, someone is going to notice and that notice can lead you to either a position where you can make some change or to contact with people who will provide you with better opportunities.

  • Baby Carrots: The Frugal Idea That Isn't   18 years 22 weeks ago

Thank you for writing about baby carrots. I actually thought they WERE evil! (Unlike your description) until I found out that they were making "good" use of otherwise wasted produce. But then, what is "good" about them? They are not delicious. They are uniform and thus boring and unnatural. They FEEL like they have been processed when you put them in your mouth. I have managed to consume a few of them, but could never, ever bring myself to purchase them. As good as vegetables are for me, I would prefer not to eat than to eat these freaks of non-nature!

I am happy for the guy who got (kind of) rich off of them and this great idea, but they are not something I want to put in my body.

As for the Twinkie lover- I wouldn't touch those either, and the existence or non-existence of baby carrots would not even bring up the thought of consuming this poison substance!

Once again, thank you for your research and explanation!

I found an edible gingerbread train kit at Target for $8 a few days ago. My 3yo nephew is crazy for Thomas The Train and I've already been told by his mother that the gingerbread train will make me the favorite uncle. Now to see how good I am at decorating.

  • DeepDiscount.com's Price Match...don't hold your breath   18 years 22 weeks ago

I've bought many DVDs from them, and although I've known some bad rumors about them on online forums (like sometimes people got repackaged items,) I've never had any trouble with them.
Regarding the Price Match policy though, yes you're right, it's been no secret that DeepDiscount is horrible at responding emails. and that's why whenever I deal with them, I call them instead, and trust me, they have wonderful representatives that always help me resolve problems.
Having said that, DeepDiscount's price match policy is only work through emails, so you always have to wait at least a week to get any respond.  And, here's why I don't think their price match is worth it: they matched to their competitor's selling price Plus tax and shipping, so that means they'll only match to (in your case) the BestBuy.com price plus tax and shipping that applys to you, so in the end (from what I've researched) DeepDiscount still have the best price, most of the time.  If not, I usually just turn to Amazon.

  • DIY Baby Care for Your Cheap Bum   18 years 22 weeks ago

similar to fiona i made cloth wipes but i used recycled flanelette from old sheets , flat nappies and bunny rugs i made double thickness wipes and just hemmed them then turned and topstiched.
for a solution i used chamomile tea (infused) and a few squirts of sorboline which i buy in 2l bottles for around $5
when they are dirty i soak them in a bucket with water and eucaliptus oil untill i can stick them in a hot wash and make sure they stay in the sun to dry for a day or two :)

  • DeepDiscount.com's Price Match...don't hold your breath   18 years 22 weeks ago

...even assuming they weren't gaming you to keep from having to match a price, now not only won't you be buying as readily from DeepDiscount, the same can be said for your readers!

Your experience encapsulates a lesson the Word of Mouth Marketing Association should be spreading and isn't: retailers, particularly online retailers, must treat every customer and every transaction like it will be the next hot topic in the blogosphere...because sometimes it will be!

  • 14 Behaviors and Attitudes That Can Drive Workplace Success   18 years 22 weeks ago

...are directly related. Crappy jobs don't yield mentors. Unfortunately, many of us have to have a paycheck and can't afford to be picky. I suggest trying working contract for a while to break a streak of crappy jobs; it's a pain, but you'll learn more this way, and will have the opportunity to network. Even if a contract doesn't result in a permanent job offer, you can use the people you met on the contract job to help you find something else. And if you find out you're working for a crappy company, you're free to move on without a blemish on your record.

I thought "scary ending" meant that the CD ended up broken. Please be more explicit.

And what's with the circular motions? The text clearly says never use a circular motion--always wipe from the center to the edge--the three videos that I watched all showed a circular motion being used.

  • Health Insurance Costs Too High? Alternative Not Pretty   18 years 22 weeks ago

When my COBRA ran out I was in dire straits because I considered uninsurable.... too high a risk due to Crohn's Disease and a variety of other "minor" things like high blood pressure & cholestral. My lifeline has been a mandatory state sponsered CHIPS program (comprehensive health insurance program. It's obscenely expensive (over 1/2 my income goes to my health insurance), but without it I'd be unable to receive the ongoing treatments I need. This program is in NE, but somthing similar may be available in your state.

  • Live like royalty on $20,000 a year   18 years 22 weeks ago

Thank you Phillip for a really great piece of advice.

Would that more folks could see their way to accepting a little less, to enjoy their life so much more.

We had our own moment of truth 18 years ago after a cancer scare, and set our priorities to try an early/frugal retirement from the "want more" world... and never looked back.  Now, in our 70's, we're not world travelers or socially prominent, but we are living the life of royalty on our own terms, and soulfully content.  Strange to say, but the turning point came in an essay,  much akin to your own wise perception.

For whatever interest it may have, I'll post it here:

    The Station
    by Robert J. Hastings

Tucked away in our subconscious minds is an idyllic vision. We see ourselves on a long, long trip that almost spans the continent. We're traveling by passenger train, and out the windows we drink in the passing scene of cars on nearby highways, of children waving at a crossing, of cattle grazing on a distant hillside, of smoke pouring from a power plant, of row upon row of corn and wheat, of flatlands and valleys, of mountains and rolling hills, of biting winter and blazing summer and cavorting spring and docile fall.

But uppermost in our minds is the final destination. On a certain day at a certain hour we will pull into the station. There will be bands playing, and flags waving. And once we get there so many wonderful dreams will come true. So many wishes will be fulfilled and so many pieces of our lives finally will be neatly fitted together like a completed jigsaw puzzle. How restlessly we pace the aisles, damning the minutes for loitering ... waiting, waiting, waiting, for the station.

However, sooner or later we must realize there is no one station, no one place to arrive at once and for all. The true joy of life is the trip. The station is only a dream. It constantly outdistances us.

"When we reach the station, that will be it !" we cry. Translated it means, "When I'm 18, that will be it ! When I buy a new 450 SL Mercedes Benz, that will be it ! When I put the last kid through college, that will be it ! When I have paid off the mortgage, that will be it ! When I win a promotion, that will be it ! When I reach the age of retirement, that will be it ! I shall live happily ever after !"

Unfortunately, once we get it, then it disappears. The station somehow hides itself at the end of an endless track.

"Relish the moment" is a good motto, especially when coupled with Psalm 118:24: "This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it." It isn't the burdens of today that drive men mad. Rather, it is regret over yesterday or fear of tomorrow. Regret and fear are twin thieves who would rob us of today.

So, stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. Instead, climb more mountains, eat more ice cream, go barefoot oftener, swim more rivers, watch more sunsets, laugh more and cry less. Life must be lived as we go along. The station will come soon enough.

...and it brings to mind the old saying: "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me."

So, yes, sometimes "never, ever" is not only warranted, but necessary and wise. When a company reneges on a promise central to their appeal, "Fool me once..."

  • DeepDiscount.com's Price Match...don't hold your breath   18 years 22 weeks ago

I got food poisoning at a Red Lobster, I refuse to eat there again. I got treated like complete crap at bestpricecameras.com, I won't buy from them again. There are obviously some exceptions, I mayb give DD's price match another try, but to be honest I don't see why I should?

  • Smell Good, Organic Skin Care At a Discount (WB Special)!   18 years 22 weeks ago

I didn't see a space for coupon code *anywhere* when I tried to place an order. They had a "notes" section, but that wouldn't automatically deduct the 15% from my total, I don't think. Too bad, I was going to order nearly $50 worth of stuff.

  • Disability Insurance: Payments and Pitfalls   18 years 22 weeks ago

We are survivors of the pitfalls of disability insurance through my husband's employer. We fought long and hard to get covered for two years. Hired an attorney (cost $5,000, luckily they reimbursed us after we won the court case) and they deducted all they had paid us up to the point of disqualification from our Social Security Benefits. Our attorney warned us that the disabililty insurance offered by employers is really a joke. Be really careful choosing your policy.
