  • Make Your DVD Player Region-Free in Seconds   18 years 24 weeks ago

I purchased the LC-516M in Korea and have succesfully set this to code free. I purchase a number of DVDs at full price from the U.S. and thus see no issue with setting the DVD player to play multiple codes.

    1. Turn DVD player on without any disc in the tray. "No Disc" should appear on the screen.

    2. Press "Pause" using the remote. Nothing will come on to the screen at this stage.

    3. Using the remote press 3, 1, 4, 1, 5, 9

    4. The screen will now show a prompt for a new code "Code ---"

    5. Press "0" for universal code.

    6. Press "Pause" again.

    7. "No Disc" should appear on the screen again meaning that you are all set to go.

    Enjoy!

  • Super-Cheap Building Supplies and a Way to Help Your Community!   18 years 24 weeks ago

In my town the local animal shelter has yard sales for fund-raisers, and whatever they have left after the sale, they donate to the Habitat Re-Sale store. It is nice when they are struggling so that they are still able to try and help other organizations. Over the summer, the shelter was broken into by people trying to steal rescued pit bulls. There was a good bit of damage. They contacted to Re-Sale store to see if they would give the shelter a new front door, since they had made donations in the past. The shelter director was told that they only accept donations from the community, they do not give back. Nice. Thanks, anyway. I'll find my treasures somewhere else!

  • 20 New Things You Can Make With Old Denim Jeans   18 years 24 weeks ago

I was really thrilled to see most of what I do with old jeans NOT on here. And some not very exactly. Is it possible I may have had some original ideas???! Shocking! I live for those salvation army bag sales to get all mine -- jeans, not ideas. Anyway, great info! Thanks!

  • When you stretch and stretch and the ends don't meet   18 years 24 weeks ago

Dave and I also married late (he's 30s, I'm late 20s) and this whole "major crisis" thing is something that we also talk about sometimes.  I don't know how likely it is, but it's definitely possible and so random that it seems like we HAVE to think about it.  And it seems like most of what we can do is be honest, both now and in the situation.  That, and learn to grow money trees!

  • The case for caloric labeling   18 years 24 weeks ago

I have a twisted reason for supporting this.
If restaurants had to list calories, they might make portions smaller, which would mean I'd still have room for desert!

Wow...that's a pretty random promotion but free is free. Too bad I missed it. Not sure I'd have gone out of way just to get one free taco though!

  • How to Make Moonshine   18 years 24 weeks ago

I have read in several places that aluminum will put off a poison when mixed with alcohol. I have an aluminum pressure cooker and I would like to use it, if its not going to poison me. Would it remove the poison if you ran the batch through 'aquarium' type charcoal?

  • The case for caloric labeling   18 years 24 weeks ago

So many every day foods come from abroad. In this country, manufacturers import a ton of food products from China (not just tainted pet food and baby formula). I'm not saying that the best standards for food handling and growing are happening in the United States all the time, but I think a majority of us would think twice about what we are purchasing if we knew the origin. I'm not saying the US should stop importing, but don't we have the right to know where are food is coming and then make the informed decision of what we put in our bodies and how we want to live our lives. I know this point might not directly relate to nutrition information of your article, but it all comes down to having the right to know so we can make informed decisions for ourself and not having the government's lax standards make them for us.

I'm sure she is very happy. I usually was. It's just that snarky commenter just struck me on the wrong day. One thing I had to constantly face when I was an expat was people who didn't necessarily understand everything else that comes along with those types of jobs and made me feel like I had to feel "guilty" for my lifestyle. It was the commenter I was responding to, sorry if that wasn't clear. I'm certainly not trying to discourage anyone from trying the nomadic thing. It's in my blood too. Have a great afternoon!

  • Simple Ways to Shop Around   18 years 24 weeks ago

googling around can save a ton of money. When my wife finally bought a new excercise machine (and yes she uses it) we used amazon.com to get the reviews and google to find the best price. Quite surprisingly we found the cheapest price was in Germany by about 300 eruos, and too boot free shipping to Spain!

Shopping around even if the price is the same can result in free shipping, but beware (at least in Europe) not every online retailer offers free return shipping.

No apology necessary. :) I always took FB's comments on her blog about her job and life to mean that she is happy to give up some of the comforts for the fun that she has in her job. But it's true that I wouldn't really be able to do what she does, and it would be hard.

  • Finally, Frugal Rules   18 years 24 weeks ago

frugal rules since the beginning of time.. i am so happy to learn that the younger gereration has finally found the means to recycle and save money. the time to do so with a young family is to outfit the children in rummage and resale clothes and etc... this alone can save a budget from going under.. no need for labels at this age..actually my therory is when the manufactors put my name on the labels then i will buy them.. i don't feel like walking around advertising for the them. this is the first of many mistakes that young people do and why? at the high prices charged. its like sheep.. gotta to have what the next one has.. what happened to thinking for ones self and making your own deceisions.?. the saying is that clothes make the person and this may be true but remember we don't wear the labels on the ourside of our clothes..so why pay the prices??.

you might want to read Tales of a Female Nomad, by Rita Golden Gelman. She is a children's author who gave up an actual home years ago and lives where she feels like it for however long she feels like it.

As far as the sanctimonious individual who was commenting on the back patting . . . while it is certainly cool to jet set about, I'm sure FB would be the first one to agree that there are certainly some tough elements to her lifestyle. Every job has it's issues. And if you think it's easy to uproot your life constantly, try it and get back to me. Picture everything you have on automatic pilot and then imagine having to figure it out all over again, sometimes on a daily basis. Imagine having to deal before coffee every morning with ATM locations, pharmaceutical issues, internet speed for dealing with stateside financial issues and more. Oh yeah, and do it in a brand new language that may not even have the same alphabet characters you are used to. Picture having to deal with long air flights and the airline industry whether you want to or not on some days. Travel and cultural immersion are wonderful, and I'm one of the biggest toads in the puddle, believe me. And I've had numerous jobs where things were taken care of for me just like FB. But there were still issues, including having an evacuation go bag packed at all times and wiring all but pocket spending money out of the country every pay day due to the worry of goverment collapse.

Before you assume she has it so easy, consider this: if it was easy to do what she's doing . . . EVERYBODY would be doing it. Hence the very small percentage of Americans who even have a passport. And oh yeah, about kudos for paying off the debt? You'd be surprised how many expats and even stateside nomadic executives use their lifestyle as an excuse to live large and couldn't afford to stop if they wanted to. So yes, she deserves credit for paying it off. She also deserves credit for taking the risk, thinking outside of the box and finding a way to put her marriage first. Back off.

Sorry Andrea, if I've overstepped my bounds by getting on a soapbox.

  • The case for caloric labeling   18 years 24 weeks ago

I think it would be good for most people to know how many calories they are eating so they can plan for the rest of their day's intake. Once you've set food in a McDonald's, it's unlikely you're going to be eating anything there that's good for you. But you're going to eat it anyway, and knowing the dietary information of what you're eating will help guide the rest of your meal choices. If you know you've just eaten more than half your day's calories in a sitting, you're probably going to want to adjust for that at dinner. If you don't know how much you've just eaten, though, you may compound that with a poor food choice later. Sure, being overweight is an obvious sign that you're doing something wrong - but considering the variety of our diets, you can't fault people for not knowing precisely what it is they are doing wrong.

  • These Choos were made for walkin': an interview with a modern urban nomad   18 years 24 weeks ago

I wasn't even going to reply to the Guest, FB, but since you did, I'll just throw in that no where in the interview did anyone try to convey that FB has it really tough. It's just a matter of looking at a different way of living. You don't have to immediately buy a home and settled down in one city. You can find a great job, travel around, and still pay off your debt. You can be a fashionista and not go into bankruptcy by making prudent purchasing choices.

I've never known anyone who has lived like FB does, so I find it fascinating. Her debt is really a minor issue of importance for me and for many readers, although it is fun to see someone erase a mound of debt over time.

    And thanks, FB, for participating.

The video I linked to mentions Olive Garden and Macaroni grill. The comparisons are completely insane.

Naomi, fast food chains are not the only ones being targeted. If you read the linked articles, you'll see that it's chain restaurants (like Outback, Olive Garden, Chilis) that are being asked to provide this information.

  • You’re Fired! 20 Signs That a Pink Slip is Coming   18 years 24 weeks ago

I got fired two months after I had a positive performance review. The manager said, "Your review was just 'satisfactory.'" No, it was glowing. The manager was a lunatic--she later got fired after some more folks she fired threatened to sue the company about her firing techniques.

As a result, I don't trust performance reviews, no matter how positive. If they want to get rid of you, they'll find a way to do it.

Right now, I'm being left out of just about everything, but I don't think they have any intention of firing me. I think I'll just sit her for another few years, rotting away at my desk.

  • The case for caloric labeling   18 years 25 weeks ago

I've been trying to be better about what I eat lately as entering my 40's apparently caused some metabolic flux. I would order a Chili's chicken Caesar salad or a Panera Greek salad as the alternative to what I thought were fattening choices. Oh the shock to me when I started Weight Watchers over a month ago! I get 23 "points" per day (which is really more than enough) but a Chili's chicken Caesar salad comes in at 20 points! Yikes! The Olive Garden is one of the few restaurants that doesn't post its nutritional info on the web; they list their healthy choices only but leave the rest of the menu up in the air. It does take some work to find the information, but boy is it eye-opening.

  • The case for caloric labeling   18 years 25 weeks ago

Actually, I do in fact own one of the little Calorie King books (I won it at Christmas), but I'm not "dieting" and don't carry it around with me (I usually have schlep keys & wallet unless I have my whole big messenger bag). It also lists a lot of the fast-food and "casual sit-down" chains (TGI Fridays kinds of places), so if someone wants the info, they can spend the $8 and carry it. Still I think it would be good if it were just *there* on the menu/bottle/etc.

Our local ReStore has a deal going with AlCan - I'm not sure what it is, exactly, but they take pop cans and I think they get good money for recycling the aluminum. We can only get out there on the weekend, but we've got a box with crushed pop cans ready for them when we can.

  • Speeding through your mortgage   18 years 25 weeks ago

From Tri, "Another approach one could take is simply pay extra towards the principal monthly but open up a HELOC anyway. The HELOC would allow access to your equity in times of need. This will yield the same result and cost you nothing extra!"

This is where I've landed -- it is nice to have the line of credit (whether it is tied to the home or not) for emergency funds though it pays to be cautious when taking a lien on your home.

Also, commenter Scott is likely a sales rep for the UFF product. Loans don't have to be paid ahead and if you can earn a return in the market that is greater than your interest rate, it may not be the best thing to pay off early.

For paying off the debt. Few things are better for the self-esteem than to work diligently at it and seeing it decrease, at least that's how I feel about it. You never truly appreciate anything if you have not earned it, is my take on it, at least it's been true in my life and in my observation of others' lives. I have tried to help my niece and sister with their financial messes over the years, and it has frankly not been appreciated and it never ends, not good for either side. Actually, I have found it makes a problem worse instead of better, ha-ha. No wonder the bible says among other things on the subject that "The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again," (Psalm 37:21). Anyway, good for you, and I bet it makes you appreciate the little perks even more. I frankly think it's the secret to the little bits of happiness we get on this earth, being honest about how we live our daily lives, I mean, always paying back what we owe.
