I love jojoba oil to remove the last reminents of eye makeup that soap and water don't remove. Jojoba oil isn't cheap, but it is a good product and extremely versatile.

  • Lower Credit Card Rates? Just Ask!   18 years 35 weeks ago

I called Chase and asked them to lower it and he transfered me then the next person transfered me before I could ask anything then the 3rd person said their was nothing at all they could do. The APR was 27.7 I had just payed off the balance so I told them I wanted to cancel and he asked if I was sure. I told them if there was nothing they could do with a 27.7 to make it lower then absolutely and so I did. I was kind of sad they gave up a customer so easily but if they weren't willing to negotiate I didn't want to be their customer anyway.

I use conditioner every day because if I didn't, I wouldn't be able to put a comb through my hair.

  • 6 Steps to Eliminating Your Debt Painlessly   18 years 35 weeks ago

The advice provided presents only a single alternative to eliminating debt of various types. There are a number of mechanisms to eliminate debt at a lower cost to the debtholder; however, the underlying question is how could one have avoided debt in the first place?

The credit cards do not force you to use them; rather, the owner makes a specific decision to live beyond their means (for those cardholders that carry balances on a frequent/consistent basis). It is true that the card issuer is partially at fault for providing the loan facility to someone who may not be able to handle incremental payments; however, that person made a choice to use the credit line - perhaps a poor decision in hindsight.

Assuming that an individual had a budget to begin with, the likelihood of hitting the easy-credit card drug would have been lower (since the level of fiscal responsibility is generally inversely related to the use of "bad unsecured debt" - unsecured debt accumulated beyond one's means to pay in a one year period).

On another subject, one suggestion that was mentioned was to destory a card that has been paid off (and by destroy it is unclear whether cancellation is implied - cancelling and destroying without cancelling are very different things).

Assuming the suggestion is to cancel the card (and then destroy the plastic), there could be very negative results represented in your credit score based on the number of credit cards you have and the total balances carried across those cards.

By cancelling a card, you are effectively reducing the total line you have access to, so the utilization of your lines (i.e., what % of your available credit are you actually using) will go up. At levels above 10-30% (depending on the lender's credit scoring criteria), there will be negative consequences on the score, despite the fact that the individual is actually getting out of debt.

By destroying a card alone, an individual is only delaying the ability to use the card again - some credit card lenders use a paid-down balance as a reason to reissue plastic, increase credit lines or make a promotional merchandise or transfer offer to the cardmember in order to create incremental value on a paid-off account (accounts that are not used cost the lender money).

The "lock pin" is threaded. The length of the "lock pin" creates a bi-lateral force (push and pull). We have tested by slamming doors over 100 times and have never had Lock Jaw accidentially engage / disengage. You should be fine. Let us know if you have any further questions.

  • How To Get A Discount Every Time   18 years 35 weeks ago

    Great post Nora.

You are one frugal woman. You fancy me as a person that would get up and leave a very profitable business to tour the world. On a shoe string budget of course.

Any tips on how to get a discount on flights?

  • How to Erase Your Medical Debt   18 years 35 weeks ago

Linsey has written an excellent post on consumer rights associated with collection agencies. If you owe money and have exhausted other sources (e.g., insurance), I would suggest that you negotiate a payment schedule with the collection agency or the hospital. Having personally tried to negotiate a discount with my hospital for a service that I did not believe was rendered as suggested by the hospital (nursery care at midnight for my child who was born after midnight and released the next day), I can attest to the difficulties of dealing with hospital administrators; the accounts receivable department (who you should most likely be dealing with now; or with the collection agency) was slightly more reasonable and allowed me to not incur interest charges while we tried to settle the dispute. At this point, however, for you, the hospital may be happy to see your money and may welcome some negotiations; though you may not get a discount, hopefully you can pay over time.

Where I live, there is a foundation that funds the medical aid relief, which is administered through the patient services department. There may be other possibilities for outside aid, but you may consider contacting charitable foundations in your area.

  • Debt repayment is not an expense   18 years 35 weeks ago

I find using a Financial Management software program has really helped me come to terms with stuff like this. Now I understand that anything I pay to my student loan debt increases my net worth. I use Gnucash (www.gnucash.org) because it's free and it does things simply and effectively. You can easily select pie or bar charts which show you where your money is going.

is held up by a screw thread. I have put this lock through it's paces for two months. IT has never dropped down onto the lock.  Not once. So you have no worries about being locked out, as far as I'm concerend. As for other types of locks, I don't think so. Take a look around their website.

  • Fix energy in tangible form   18 years 35 weeks ago

I don't know how many people want to wear sweaters at home to save money. But if I'm right about energy prices rising, then I think more and more will be taking steps to use less energy in the future. The ones who plan ahead will be in a better position than the ones who wait until they're forced into it by rising prices.

I was told by a creditor one time that the higher number of active credit accounts you have, the lower your credit score is. If you can pay off debts on some of your cards (ie: department stores) and are planning on cutting them up anyways, you should go ahead and cancel the account too, because if you don't it will continue to affect your score. Plus, until you cancel the account, you keep getting coupons, etc in the mail, which makes it easier to want to go out and spend money again.

Do you think they have any other types of locks if you don't have that type of deadbolt on your doors? Maybe something for the handle? I'm always afraid of someone trying to break into my place since I live on the ground level.

  • Baby Carrots: The Frugal Idea That Isn't   18 years 35 weeks ago

There are varities of carrots that are small and sweet naturally - look for Chantenay carrots.
Whole carrots or sliced carrots generally taste better as you need the cross section to get the proper taste.
Imperator carrots are used to make 'baby' carrots becuase they are long and thin and there simply is not enough smaller carrots to satisy the demand.
Carrot varities are chosen on disease resistance and breakability as well as taste so that the poorly paid farmer can actually make some money out of his crop.
Carrots are mainly washed in brush washers now as they discovered that removing a thin outer layer resulted in less 'silvering' - they virtually come pre-scrubbed.
Buy carrots in bunches with the stalk still on (it still contains some nutrients), still dirty and stick them in the fridge for best shelf life.
During the winter, the carrot plants stop growing and are covered in hay to protect them from frost so for half the season they are actually stored undergound.

  • Local Flavor   18 years 35 weeks ago

Thanks for your post and perspective. Sometimes we get so caught up in getting the best deal and getting it our way that we forget there are other approaches. There is great intangible value in having strong relationships.

Also, considering your local involvement and then considering some of the complaints in my consumer advocacy post, I realize that there can be tangible, even financial benefits to the independent shops. A right item (item with the perfect fit or the piece of equipment that is appropriate for an application), though sometimes more expensive at a local shop than the mass retailer, can save money in the long run.

  • Debt repayment is not an expense   18 years 35 weeks ago

I guess whether it makes a difference really depends on whether or not making the distinction changes the way you think about your spending. For me it did.

Seeing the interest as a current expense--as something I had to pay every month, but for which I didn't see any tangible improvement in my daily life--made me want to cut that expense.

Seeing the principle not as an expense, but as an internal transfer, helped me make decisions about allocating cash between principle repayment and investments that I was comfortable with.

Making a pie chart of where your money is going can be quite revealing and provide insight that can guide future purchasing decisions. My experience with doing that was that getting it right--showing the interest (and fees, but not principal) as a current expense--made that pie chart more more meaningful to me and more useful for guiding my decisions.

I can't promise it will help you, but it did help me.
