  • How to Survive a Road Trip   18 years 41 weeks ago

    Great tips! Here's a few more, from years of vacation driving with two young sons frm Vermont to D.C. on a budget:
    • Don't drive when drowsy or tired...pull-off the road. It's not worth the risk;
    • Lot's of breaks (every 1-1.5 hours). It seems like a pain to stop so often, but you get to your destination much less drained;
    • When you take a break, get out of the car, stretch, race each other (park at the back of the rest-stop parking lots, where there's little traffic). It gets the road glaze out...amazing how this builds-up, makes you more alert;
    • For restaurant meals, eat your big meal at lunch time, as luncheon menu items are cheaper than supper items;
    • Plan something fun to do each day (it doesn't have to be expensive);
    • Monitor everyone's mood and take spontaneous stops to blow-off steam...every town/city has parks, elementary schools have swings;
    • Ahead of time, scout attractions along the route. This way, you'll know when and where fun stops are if you need them;
    • Stay off of the high-stress interstates if you have the time (e.g. take the blue highways). If you do need to drive the interstates try to do it at night, when traffic is lighter, kids should sleep, and summer temperatures will be cooler;
    • For traveling during winter in cold climates, plan for emergencies: carry sleeping bags or blankets, snow boots, gloves, hats.

    Here's an example of a really stupid diabetic doing something like that.

    dude, what is with people? re bartlett, you have just painted hedgehog owners as complete nutcases. rhere wasn't anything in that article that indicated that the writer wanted you to treat a hedgehog like a piece of furniture. why are so many reader so overly-sensitive? goodness gracious, take a chill pill!

  • Dead car battery? Give it a glass of red wine.   18 years 41 weeks ago

    Often the battery dies because of poor terminal connectivity -- even when corrosion looks minimal. Loosen the connectors. Cut a lemon in half and grind it on the terminal and cable ends. Reattach. Might restart on remaining battery power with better connectivity. Might require a jump. Then, off you go. Drink the wine.

    That sounds like a question for a doctor. The thing is, being diabetic makes it harder to lose weight (unless you are undiagnosed and you have high blood sugars; in which case you drop weight like crazy but also deevelop all kinds of side-effects, like kidney problems, eye problems, and foot problems). Once your blood sugar is under control, you might start gaining weight, but it's often better to be a little heavier with good sugars than thing with bad ones. :)

    But really, ask your doc.

  • Canadians Try To Kill Your Pets - Pet Food Recall   18 years 41 weeks ago

    I recognize that many people read a blog post title and are pretty sure that they have the gist of it, but believe me, if you ACTUALLY READ THE POST, you might find that I don't think there's anything funny about losing a pet. As a pet owner, I would never find joy in someone else's loss.

    That said, it's not my responsilbility to track the pet food poisoning story - that's being done by my friends Ben and Emily at Itchmo. If you had bothered to read any further than the post title, you would realize that this was an article about what to feed animals, should you not want to take the risk by feeding your pets the dreck produced by the pet food industry.

    Or at least, I urged my boyfriend to. He managed to get a trip to Amsterdam for something like $500 using this. I imagine people would be willing to pay for it on Craigslist or eBay - I'd pay $20 to get $100 off of a ticket - it's still an $80 savings.

  • Go topless this summer with strapless flip-flops.   18 years 41 weeks ago

    If you keep them on, your feet are in constant contact with the sticky surface so no worries. If you take them off, you can wash them in the water to regain stickiness and put them back on.  As far as I can see, there's not an obvious flaw at all. Considering flip-flops are designed as beach wear, I'm sure this question bubbled-up at the concept stage.

    i think a movie about beauty products should be made. kind of in the realm of devil wears prada. and joann...why dont you write a screenplay?

    So what happens when you take these things to the beach, the surface gets sandy, and you have to go home barefoot?

  • Junk Mail revenge part 1 - Make fast cash reselling junk mail.   18 years 41 weeks ago

    I haven't found anything to say it's illegal, but maybe a lawyer can answer that one. All I know is that right now, there are quite a few people making money off this idea. Also, people on Craigslist sell coupons for cash all the time. Maybe it's illegal for other stores to try and sell you a coupon?

  • Junk Mail revenge part 1 - Make fast cash reselling junk mail.   18 years 41 weeks ago

    Then it's legal for now.

    Nice find, Paul! And I just threw away a ValPak without even looking! Ack!

  • Junk Mail revenge part 1 - Make fast cash reselling junk mail.   18 years 41 weeks ago

    That is a really cool idea, wish I had thought of it before I flipped through and recycled the coupons.

    I do question whether it is legal? Don't those things usually have a not for resale statement on them?

    I searched the web for information concerning dog food poisoning and this was one of the results. Do you find losing a pet amusing ? Ask my 3 kids aged 2,4,7 they lost their beloved dog ! And i do not find anything amusing in accusing Canada or the Usa ! Blame the companies that made the food and did no controls of its quality. I think that changing your title and offering information would be a better way then trying to start a blog war ! There's enough conflict in the world. Would it not be nice to see how we could get together to find solutions to make sure these things do not happen again? Pet food and human consumption foods !
    How can we make legislation make laws to prevent this from happening again in North America ? Try that as your subject and you will probably have the most popular blog on the net , people love their pets and appreciate the people involved in keeping them Healthy !
    And to those who lost pets or have a sick pet speak up and make a change ! Get together and do something .
    Sorry for those who lost a pet or has a sick one .....

    If you color your hair at home (I know hairdresser hate this), it is a lot cheaper in the long run if you buy the dye & developer plus a reusuable plastic bottle, and a bag of plastic gloves at your local beauty supply shop. I only recommend this to people who have dyed their hair often and are comfortable with the process. Definitely speak with someone at the store to ensure you buy the right volume of developer. The box of dye will tell you what ratio of dye to developer you will need. The bottle of developer will last you though several dye jobs. When I was using a semi-permanent color a tube of dye and a tube of clear gloss lasted me two dye jobs. You can also go to the manufactures websites to find the ratio & devolping time if you're unsure. Not only is it cheaper, but you'll have a lot more color options.

    PS. You MUST use conditioner after dying your hair!

    Beauty supply stores generally have great prices on other beauty products. Go off the beaten path from Sally's and I promise you that not only will you find good prices, but you'll find some cool stuff.

  • Fine Dining on a Take-Out Budget   18 years 41 weeks ago

    Hint: Call first to check where in the training cycle the students are -- you'll get much better service at the end of a training cycle than at the beginning of the cycle. (The Cordon Bleu school near me has a 6-week cycle.) So if you're taking someone there for a special dinner or lunch, try to make it at the end, so that food timing is perfect and service fluid. Usually there is a trainer walking around helping the servers and making sure your meal is a good one, and we weren't allowed to tip, so our dinner was $40 each (we had wine pairings for each course, which added to the price).

  • How to Survive a Road Trip   18 years 41 weeks ago

    Great article. I'd just emphasize: as we learned last winter, don't leave the highway to drive into a mountain wilderness in a snowstorm -- or anyplace else you don't have the survival skills for -- without thinking "Could I survive if I get stuck?"

    If the answer is no, please -- lose the schedule, and don't risk it.

  • Five Beauty Products I've Learned To Live Without   18 years 41 weeks ago

    I'm amazed at jessica's post. I didn't know there was so much to shampooing and conditioning. I posted the conditioner option because I see so many girls put a HUGE glob in their hands and smother it through their hair, leaving a very uneven shampoo to conditioner ratio in their showers, causing them to buy more conditioner. lol. so i guess if you learn to use it the right way you can still save.
    Personally, I've just become lazy and ever since I've cut my hair short I've found conditioner wasn't needed as long as I didn't overdo the washing. but thanks for the great tips!

    re: baby oil - i've heard mineral oil is bad for the skin, but i haven't had any problems as long as I've used a good facial cleanser that will wash off the residue. I've only discovered it because I haven't found an eye-makeup remover that can adequately take off my waterproof mascara. But it never hurts to experiment with alternatives if this one seems icky, so bottoms shelves of the drugstore is a great tip.
