Oh no! I just finished writing a blog post for tomorrow about that exact same staircase! What are the odds?

On the other hand, it does mean that I picked the right space-saver to write about as a good idea on my creativity and innovation blog! Everyone seems to be slapping their heads and going "Of course! That's a great way to get our shoes out of the way and to utilize a usually-forgotten space in a small house!"

Thanks for the tip about the other idea site. I'm looking forward to checking it out.

  • Will Internet Radio die on July 15th?   18 years 44 weeks ago

I've been broadcasting on Live365 for over 4 years. I started amidst the whole file sharing crackdown, when the Copyright Arbitration Royalty Panel (CARP) decided that Internet broadcasts were promoting piracy when, in reality, they actually were good for business because the stations provided exposure to many styles of music you might not get to hear on your local radio station. Thus, people (like me) might purchase music based on what they listened to on their favorite Internet station.

I think enough people protested, at the time, and stations went back "on the air" (so to speak).
Enough voices can make a change.

I don't say you have to agree. And please note I said 'purpoted benefits', which means none of this is yet proven!! It is an idea, that's all. Nothing to be scared of, but rather examined for what it is. I'd suggest just taking a look through their website and reading through the proposals. They would in fact use natural sunlight (the building would be solar and wind powered). The purpose of the building is to be self sustaining.

I don't deny there would be ethical issues involved, but I don't see what's wrong with thinking it's fascinating.

  • What was your best purchase in the past year?   18 years 44 weeks ago

My best purchase this year is an acrylic 3-gallon aquarium.

We live full-time in our motorhome and I thought I would never be able to keep fish in a moving vehicle. But I really missed having an aquarium and decided that a small one made of plastic would be pretty low-risk.

The aquarium lives on my bedside table, on non-skid rubber and inside a brownie pan to catch occasional slopping while driving. My three fish are happy and healthy. One has been with us now for over 5,000 miles of travel!

Every night as I fall asleep, I watch the beautiful creatures swim. It is a peaceful end to each day and I love it.

"and you can raise animals in it."

good lord. for that "look at the cool factory farm high-rise replacement" comment alone you deserve a big thumbs-down.

vegetables grown indoors in buildings. hurray. instead of using sun and natural irrigation--let's do more artificial farming.

hey, maybe GMOs aren't so bad after all, either?

and so on. c'mon, man. this is awful. adjust your perception. see it for what it is--more technology where less technology is needed. artificiality and artificial complexity where more authenticity is needed.

     Hey Andrea

From the articles I've read on the subject, unfortunately not much has been uncovered about exactly how the animals will survive. This is all still theoretical, so it may well be that they will be infected in such conditions. From what I've read so far, from the report on the website, is that fish and poultry can be raised inside, and water and air filters would be installed in building to 'remove foreign pathogens and toxins.'

This year I purchased a $30 sewing machine. I thought why not give this sewing thing a try. I realized that I had talent for making purses and it's like everything fell into place for me. I knew at that moment that I want to design and make purses for a living.

  • AT&T Offers $10 DSL Plans   18 years 44 weeks ago

Hello again Wise Bread, where "living larger on less" is the theme. My hat is off for AT&T's execution after all. The free modem kit arrived yesterday afternoon. Good equipment, easy set up. IT WORKED the first time. This is the first time I've ever experienced broadband at all. Compare my tone now with my prior posting above. At this speed I can at last watch YouTube videos. Pages snap open. I surfed all of last night. It's not 8mbs, I know, but =I can live with this=.

Ran a dozen speed tests at various times from various services.
All resulted in over 630kbs downstreaming; most in the 690's.

THIS TERM AGREEMENT is a gift for anyone like me, who has an AT&T land line already as a matter of course, and has never had broadband before. $10/mo will be tacked onto my bill. The TERM AGREEMENT made no mention of any extra charges (I wonder if any will come--time'll tell), but the term agreement does state that the modem is FREE and is mine to keep after the first 12 months.

This is not 3 or 6 or 8mps. But I think, after all these years on slow dialup, I can live with this very happily! It's more than an order of magnitude better than what we had.
All for ten bucks per month, for the next, what? Thirty months?

Summary: The service was delivered promptly and it meets, nearly, the promised potential speed. ATT's product engineers and their field technicians are fine, always have been.

IF you qualify, consider the Term Agreement (it is not an "offer", but a concession to FCC mediated terms) for a viable, cheap, no-BS upgrade from dial-up.

If and when I learn of strictures or charges presently unknown, I'll report back here to Wise Bread.

If the service goes kersplat, slows, or otherwise hiccups,
I'll make another report. For now, day one: I feel that the little guy has won this one. That means you have won.

    Off to YouTube,

    MC

It's my understanding that animals raised in close quarters have to be treated with antibiotics to keep them from falling ill (especially if they never get any time out of doors). I wonder how an "organic" tower could prevent such a thing?

My best purchase this year? I purchased a surgery for my cat for $2500. He'd eaten some string and it was wrapped around his intestines, bunching them up. In a matter of three days (the time it took for us to realize it wasn't just something he'd eaten and to be able to make a vet's appointment), he'd gone from healthy three year old cat to needing four hours of rehydration before he had enough of a blood pressure for them to be able to do the surgery at all. Many people told us to just put him down, it wasn't worth it. We had to borrow some money, and the vet let us make three weekly payments of $450.50 for the rest of it. We've had to be extra-frugal for the past month and a half, and I took on a second job which ultimately went full-time (so I quit my other job), but I cannot think of a better purchase we've made this year. He is so worth it. (And, I never would have forgiven myself if we put him down because he was "too expensive". Animals' lives are important, too, and you can't really place a dollar figure on that.)

first off whoever posted the first 2 comment must have add cause there way off topic here, but i can fix that, the only reason this is happening is because the government is so corrupt that their industry puppet masters are dancing to their tunes. how are they gonna pass a bill that isnt fair to the american people? last time i check they worked for us right? so that leads me to believe that they dont care and used us to get to their current posistion so they can sh** all over us and i for one think its bullsh**.If the american people are talking and there only listening to the record execs then maybe we should kick there no good ass's out of office. I say we stand the f* up and show em that its about that time, its like mr smith goes to washington, i dont know how many of you have seen that but i think everyone should. i think america needs a good revolution, time to refresh the tree of liberty and all that. take out this low down dictatorship, since we stopped being democratic a long time ago. I mean jesus, like bush really won all those votes. Hes a f*in moron, he waved at stevie wonder...HES F*IN BLIND. Remember people, the revolution will be televised

One of my favorite internet stations shut down recently, and I was so sad to see it go! I can't imagine losing all variety online. All over the place, I'm seeing articles, blogs, threads, etc that talk about how one-sided the RIAA is, and how much they suck. But how uphill is this battle to prevent this law from going into effect?

  • Will Internet Radio die on July 15th?   18 years 44 weeks ago

Being silenced has absolutely nothing to do with Internet Radio being silenced? I see. Well, in the interests of being fair, I'll change it. Thanks for the great comments!

The best item I bought in the last year would have to be my MacBook. I'm a student who commutes 1.5 hrs each way to school most days of the week. I take public transportation, so instead of sleeping (like I normally did) I can review notes, work on papers and generally get more done. I've found that I have a lot more free time during the day than I did before and that has allowed me to relax a little bit more.

I admit, I'm curious about the BYUSA picture in front of the BYU library.

I'm rather familiar with the incident that was protested after the student elections a year ago, and it has absolutely nothing to do with your topic.

Thanks for the ideas! I also like taking an ice cold shower right before going to bed and using window fans to bring in the cool breeze from outside - if there is one.

my laptop ... it's the best money spent, and $180 pair of red Italian pants for $19.99.

It looks like it says BYUSA- the name of BYU's student government. Am I right, or is it referring to something else?

  • What was your best purchase in the past year?   18 years 44 weeks ago

My best buy of the last 365 days was a set of waterproof panniers from Ortleib. One is roomy enough for my computer, a few work files, a change of clothes, and my wallet/keys/phone. Add the second bag and I can pick up my share of veggies from my CSA on the way home or run some other quick errands. Before I had a good set of panniers, I used my bike for recreation, but now I am a mean, lean, commuting machine. I use less gas, I work out more regularly, and I don't have to worry that my lapop will get soaked in a surprise rainstorm.

  • Best Time For Summer Shopping In Europe!   18 years 44 weeks ago

i went to another country for christmas and only packed a carry-on bag and a bakpack. relatives gave me so much stuff, i exceeded the weight limit for carry-on - forcing me to check the bag. the flight home was uneventful, but it took an hour before i saw my bag again on the luggage carousel.

Determined to do something special for my sixtieth birthday, I decided to take take a trip to Mexico and bring my daughter along. I had never been to the Yucatan so looked on the map for the perfect place. I wanted something far from the tourist spots and found an island called Holbox off the north tip. I had a travel agent arrange the flights as I was coming from the west and she from the east and we needed good coordination. I booked the hotel (via the internet) and arranged ground transportation through them. We flew into Cancun and from there a three or so hour drive west then north; then a forty five minute ferry ride to the island. What makes this place so special? Well, way out of the way for one. It is a small fishing village; no high rises, no cars! Residents get around on golf carts or mopeds--but generally walk--everything is within walking distance. A writer in Island Magazine called the residents about the most content people on earth. I would have to agree. The guide who took us out to another island which is a bird sanctuary said he wants for nothing--he makes enough to pay his rent and buy staples and can go out and catch a fish if he gets hungry. He did not even seem to get the concept of having "more." We stayed in a delightful hotel on the beach built in the Mayan style. For two of us for six days was around three hundred dollars. (Breakfast was included--and they offered fresh fruit, cereal, coffee, toast etc etc.) Every single meal for lunch and dinner---we tried places all over town--was delicious--and ran about six dollars. Of course we had grilled fish seasoned so many different ways --each was a delight--rice and vegetables--healthy eating (assuming there was no mercury in their fish).
For about $1600 my daughter and I had six of the most delightful days of our lives. I am looking forward to my next visit.
