  • Should We All Just Stop Paying the Mortgage?   17 years 28 weeks ago

These are my feelings on the whole thing. I am 26 years old and my husband is 29. Back in 2005 we moved 60 miles so we could afford the smallest townhouse in our neighborhood. We live in the DC area which is on the expensive side to say the least. We did everything right we got a 30 year fixed with an ok rate. We only had 5% to put down. How many people at the age of 23 have 20% of 375,00 dollars just saved away. Not many unless mommy and daddy are helping them out. Since we bought this house our value has dropped 135,000 dollars. My husband was laided off for 6 months in the beginning of 2008. We have never missed a mortgage payment we have done without so much. We can't even afford to have another child. So I pray to god everyday that someone makes this right. Our whole goal in 2005 was to have the american dream not to flip houses or buy something that we couldn't afford. We make a combined income of 125,000 and we still struggle. So for all those people out there that are bitching about a government bailout if it doesn't happen soon you will have section eight housing throughtout nice neighborhoods like we have had hear. In our stripe of 8 townhouses there are only 2 owners left. Imagine having to explain to your four year old why her best friend had to suddonly move out because her parents couldn't pay there rent. This is the third family since we have lived here now we have neighbors that are government subsisized. So really what is the difference.

Have a little heart some people made bad decisions, but I am sure that none of the people speaking negatively about a bailout are perfect. If the money is spend now to correct the problem and there are guidelines in place so this never happens again it is only going to benefit everyone in the near future. The Housing crisis is the bulk of the problem with the market.

For all those people watching there retirements just go away wouldn't you like to see the economy bounce back I hate to be a bearer of bad news but sometimes you have to spend money to make money.

To end things positivly I am happy that I have somewhere that I can call home. If everyone would reflect on all the things in there life that they have to be grateful for all this **** is not worth worring about. It is what it is and it will work it self out things always do. Patience is not always easy.

    Good Luck

I did this expriment. Because the number of miles driven a month were less, i got lower rates on my auto insurance. I can recommend it for sure.

I've been considering getting one for myself for a while now.... My husband has one, and gets his Wall Street Journal subscription through it. Since he travels a lot, I don't get to read the paper daily, and am frankly too lazy to go back through a week's worth of papers. Now that I will have my own, we can share the subscription. I will also use it to pick up those books that I can't read within a week or so; non-fiction books that are dry that I only read a few pages at a time.

    You are right on target.

If Obama is elected, this type of government will be standard operating procedure. After all - it's only "fair" to "spread the wealth" since we are home owners, not because of hard work and sacrifice, but because we happen to be more "fortunate" than others.

If you drive less than a certain number of miles a month, you can get lower rates on your auto insurance as well.

We've also done the higher deductible thing, and it helps for sure. Particularly if there's a type or level of coverage you'd like to have that you might not be able to afford otherwise.

Yup, just last year I called comcast and lowered my internet bills by $20 a month.  Also this year I had the hubby call his car insurance company a couple times and they lowered his rate by 40% for a) getting married b) turning 25.

  • Sexually Transmitted Debt: Eewww!   17 years 28 weeks ago

LOL @ "I hope that was great sex!"

    (it probably wasn't).

the guy in this story doesn't know what an appropriate boundary is and doesn't know how to communicate or negotiate with his girlfriend. The woman is a user.

This fictional couple didn't have a clue what they were doing. Hopefully ( if they are real people) they will learn something positive from the experience.

Posters who are complaining that finances shouldn't be separate in committed relationships may be right, but they should note that what Nora described was not a committed relationship, it probably wasn't even a relationship where either person defined what they wanted to the other person and came to agreement on it. It's no wonder that hardship followed fast and hard.

Hey everyone, I thought I would e-mail for online help to see if the game was rigged or not. Not like they would tell me or anything but this is the response or responses that I got. My orignal question is at the bottom preceeded by the answer. Above that is my reply and so forth. It seemed like alot of beating around the bush if you ask me. What do you think?

Dear Valued Customer:Thank you for contacting the MONOPOLY® 2008 Game at McDonald’s® Email help link.

The codes at the bottom of the shown Game Stamps are unique to the Online Game. After entering the code and rolling the dice (see section C from the Official Rules), participant's game token will automatically move a number of spaces which corresponds to the total of the numbers shown on the dice. This may be a different property than the “Collect & Win” Game Stamp.

The Online Game can be played at www.PlayatMcd.ca. To play, you must register for the Online Game. Follow the instructions below:

Enter a Code: Enter the 10-digit code (or a FREE Code) found at the bottom of your Game Stamp.

Enter a Valid Email Address: Enter a valid email address. THIS IS WHERE YOUR PRIZE EMAILS WILL BE SENT. Then confirm that you are over 13 years of age. Check the “Remember Me” box so when you return, all you will have to enter is a Game Code (do not check “Remember Me” if you are using a public computer).

Complete the Registration Page: Fill out required fields, first and last name, home phone, email address, password (and confirm it), postal code and enter the captcha code. Check the box to agree to the Official Rules of the game and click “continue.” Complete page 2 of the registration page, click “finish” or “skip.”

Choose a Token & Roll the Dice: Select a MONOPOLY ® game token, click to roll the dice for a chance to win instantly or collect a property. All tokens will begin the Online Game on GO. You will see the result of your roll and the token will move the appropriate spaces. Once the token lands, the property collected will be highlighted on the board.

    · Limit ten (10) Codes per day, per person and/or valid e-mail address. FREE codes do not count against this limit.

View Properties Collected: Once registered, properties collected may be viewed by going to My Monopoly, My History Tab and click on My Gameplay.

Returning User Log-In: Returning users who have registered may view their account or properties collected without a code. Login with your email address and password. Go to My Monopoly, click on My Account to see your registration information or My History to see properties collected and potential prizes won.

Thanks for the information but you didn't answer my question at all. You actually didn't even seem to attempt it. What I was asking as you can clearly see below; is if the outcome of the roll of the dice is predetermined or just dependent on luck. For example: I only need one property or piece of each prize group and each time I roll the dice I never land on one that I need. A couple of time around the board it's believeable but 4 times is getting kind of "fishy".
What I wondered is if, to limit entries, certain spots may only be landed on so many times a day or if it's just luck of the roll.
Please respond again, as I would really like to know.
    Thanks in advance

My Gameplay is your personal game play history. You must click on My Gameplay to view the Codes you have played and properties collected. The most recent play is at the top and shows you the code you played, where you started and where you ended. Each screen will list the five most recent plays. Move up your game history reading left to right. If your role is a doubles, your play history will reflect all of the properties you collected using a single code, starting with the property you originally started on. For folks who play online and via mobile, your history will capture your entry method as well.

If you don’t see a Code listed that you believe you have played, click on My Account to make sure your information is correct. If you have been playing via mobile, make sure your mobile phone number and 5-digit PIN have been added to My Account. If you do not see your mobile plays, register online to sync your mobile plays to your online plays and your account will update.

    Subject: CA: Online Game Question

Comment/Question: I was wondering if during the online game the outcome of the roll of the dice is predetermined to reduce potential winning entries? It seems like it is since I've collected all the properties except for one of each and haven't collected anything new for the last 4 trips around the board. I will continue playing but I would like to know if the rolls are predetermined.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Five calls you can make now to save hundreds to thousands of dollars   17 years 28 weeks ago

So I had read plenty articles like this informing consumers to call up their service providers and talk the price down. I thought this would never work for me and seemed useless until my Comcast cable bill began to stun me at how expensive it was. I decided to give it a shot and simply called customer service and said I was calling to see how I could get my monthly cable costs lowered. I went from paying $130/month to $80/month (including internet) without any haggling or threatening! I highly recommend giving it a go.

  • Is your credit score suffering without your knowledge?   17 years 28 weeks ago

I recently took a look at my credit score through a free trial offer, since I had been meaning to do it anyway -- and this way I got a few bucks in my account.

I found out that one of my store cards was claiming I had been deliquent on over $200 -- and the account had been closed. This was back in 2000, and I was certain that every credit card I had was paid. (I, at that point, was a student and so had padding in the bank.) Not to mention the fact that I currently have a line of credit with the same store. Now why would they give me credit if I still owed them $200?

Ridiculous. A nice part of the trial is that these services make it easy to dispute the items online.

Despite all this (and a hefty balance on my cards) my credit score is still above 700, which I find incredible. And, even stranger, one of my cards actually UPPED my limit, recently. That certainly knocked me for a loop, given the current economy.

Carrie, I wish I could help you justify the cost. I want one, too. Think about the cost, how long will the battery last, what is the replacement cost for the battery, do you sell your books after you read them (I often do)? If it has the same effect on your eyes as a computer monitor, will your eyes get tired in the same way? I agree with "Clever Dude." Not only does the publisher have on printing, shipping, etc costs., but it's one less used copy out there, since as I alluded to, you can't resell it. The cost of the "books" should definitely be lower.

Be strong! Don't do it! Maybe when the price hits $200. MAYBE.

  • The line between frugal and crazy   17 years 28 weeks ago

While the questions you suggest we ask ourselves are helpful, I don't think they're the last word on crazy/not crazy.

Part of the problem is that we are so prone to rationalize our behaviour. The workaholic thinks his/her kids are happy and that they're happy. They convince themselves that the kids are happier because they have a bigger house and more toys than they would be without those things and an involved parent.

I think another couple of questions that help us determine health might be a wider & longer view:
    1. If everyone did what I am doing, would the world be a better place?
    2. If I had just one year left to live, would I change my behaviour? (Many times we convince ourselves it's short-term pain for long-term gain [and then go on to live in short-term pain for a long time], but this question forces us to re-evaluate.)

  • Should We All Just Stop Paying the Mortgage?   17 years 28 weeks ago

    Lise:

I wouldn't be stupid/naive enough to buy a house where the documentation was in a language I couldn't understand. I would also not be stupid/naive enough to enter into an enormous financial transaction in a foreign language without an attorney on retainer. If you can shell out enough money to afford the purchase of a residence, you can shell out a few hundred bucks to pay for an attorney to review/explain the documents for you. If you can't afford that, you have no business buying a house. It's not like, at the height of the housing bubble, there weren't apartments a-plenty.

Furthermore, I wouldn't consider permanent residence in a country when I didn't speak the primary language at least well enough to understand how to translate 'adjustable-rate mortgage'.

I don't think I'm Little Miss Perfect... this is just common sense, here.

  • Why I (Heart) My High Deductible Health Insurance Plan   17 years 28 weeks ago

I'm reluctant to tell you what insurance I have, only because it is more dependent on location than company.  I live in Nebraska, where regulations are different, so if you don't live here, I can't guarantee that the same company will be able to offer you a similar plan.  I can tell you that I used several online comparison shopping tools to find my plan,  Ehealthinsurance.com being one.

To be quite frank, it's unfortunate that everyone in the U.S. doesn't have the same opportunity to buy competitive plans.  It's a big disussion in the upcoming election, as both candidates having opposing views on how state-specific regulations affect pricing.  I have my own opinions, as well :)
