For me, one of the big temptations is the fact that I would have less to lug around, particularly while traveling. That, and we are trying to downsize to have less clutter overall. While the flood certainly helped with that, there is a huge shipment still to come that has been stored with the military this whole time. Confession? My husband and I are both book sluts. So when we are able (and it's way down the list for a while) we may choose to get one as a way to force ourselves to have less of them to pack up next time. Hopefully, the prices will be a bit lower by then.
Thanks for the posting of "Very Wise Words". How true. Just as a point of clarification, Wikipedia attrubutes the quote to William J.H. Boetcker. Here's the link:
I think it's the instant gratification thing that would end up costing me a lot of money with the Kindle. I read a few books and magazines a week on average, but they're almost all from the library (I'm a librarian). If I had the power to instantly download a book onto a Kindle anywhere in the world, I think it's safe to say I'd end up paying a lot more for books/media than I do right now. It's really attractive, though. 4000 books in my commuting bag! Never running out of things to read on a train or bus or plane! The bliss!
Yeah, I would spend more. Although I think i would subscribe to some blogs and enjoy reading those when out and about, for a pretty low price.
i used to pay for an audiobook each month from Audible.com. I think if i get a Kindle i will get into audiobooks again. Listening to those while doing housework is a lot more fulfilling than watching TV, which is what I have resorted to.
I've considered getting the Kindle too, but the cost of both the unit AND the fact that I can still get those books for free from the library has definitely held me back. I don't buy books normally, so I think having this device and the "sunk cost" feeling would make me spend more than I normally would on books. As tempting as it is, I'll pass for now unless the device comes down to like $100 and you save 70-80% off the price of the hardcopy book. I mean c'mon, it's digital and no printing costs for the publisher. Give me more savings than just a few bucks!
Surprised to hear Walgreens did that for a day. I don't like to use Walgreens for refills. Checkout: http://www.dvdinkrefills.com . It's cheaper to refill yourself instead of have someone else do it for you. The website supports refills for all Primera Bravo printers, but not other printers. These refill kits are specific to dvd and cd duplication machines.
Love the intro paragraph, Carrie. Very clever. Actually, the whole article is extremely clever. I'm drooling over one too, to tell you the truth. It'll be a while before I can afford one, mind you. But that doesn't stop me from drooling. Good job.
I don't know if this is good all over but the Houston Chronicle this morning had an ad that said for the next two days, you can pay $10 and get a pass to Sams Club for 10 Days. The holidays will come in this period of time so it sounds like a good deal to me.
This is only good if you are not a member of Sams Club now. No employee of Sams or Walmarts can do this.
Also, in my email today I got a note from Walgreens with a $5.00 coupon if you purchase $20 or more. Now, thats a good deal tool.
Last time they did that, I went ahead and bought my next printer cartridge--which I would need pretty soon anyway.

After seeing reports that Amazon isn't offering the 3 months again, i signed in with a separate email address to test the textbook offer. once i had the books in my cart, i did not get the offer for 3 months of prime. only 1 month.
of course i didn't try to sign up since i already have a free prime trial. but i did not see the offer anymore. anyone else still seeing the 3-month offer anywhere?
...then go down to the courthouse and get married, you can do it today in a lot of places. It will probably involve less paperwork than the loan will.
This is what I tell anyone who is dating and thinks they should co-sign a loan for their girlfriend or boyfriend. And frankly it comes up a lot because 'love conquers all' in America. If you think you're ready to co-sign a loan but that the idea of getting married this week is ridiculous than you have no idea what co-signing is.
Carrie,
I've just read your reply to my questions to you about Amazon on Wisebread.
Thanks for that.
What makes you think Amazon hasn't got the 3-month freebie anymore?
Did you try again and bombed out or worse had to accept a fake order?
Do keep well.
Michael.
Hey, I just wanted to thank you for creating such great software.
Bookmarking Demon makes getting backlinks so much easier, and it's helped my exposure, helped me get more traffic, and even rank significantly higher in the search engines.
Whenever I make a new page, article, or Squidoo lens, I fire up Bookmarking Demon and let it go to work. Great piece of software - I use it almost every day.
I'm really curious about those of you who say you want to walk away from your home that you're upside down on and instead buy a cheaper home since the prices are so low. How are you going to do this? After you walk away, you're not going to be able to get that other home, or if you get it first, it will be taken away along with your first abandoned home. Am I missing something?? And for those who say it's not a matter of integrity, rather a financial decision, then it's plain to see you have no itegrity.
Greed got us here and if there are no consequences, there will be no correction in society and we're failed to repeat it and more will be tempted to fall into the same trap.
I work at CVS and would not recommend anyone buy from them, esp. groceries. CVS regularly ships food items and nonfood items together in the same tray -- Pam antistick spray w/ hairspray and Raid insect killer, summer candy w/ Raid, Boost w/ Rid lice killer w/ permethrin, also pet food w/ cough and cold, baby formula in the same tray as cigars. Regulations are routinely ignored by everyone except me -- cases of bleach placed atop food items on palettes in basement, for example, after I have gone to the trouble to carefully segregate them. I once dared complain about this to a manager who did this, and as a result he cut my hours w/ no reason given even though I am their best worker. Cases of food are placed on filthy basement floor. Perishables are not rotated. Maybe you think I an just an employee w/ a grudge, but you can verify all this if you take the trouble. Just go in on the day they have delivery, you can see for yourself.
I have the same general feelings about conspicuous consumption... but
I feel a little different about blaming government. I DO blame government... and the "FatCats".
Government operates in the shadows. 40,000 lobbyists hired almost entirely by business to influence 535 congressmen.
Political appointments based on friendship and not competence.
A government "by the people" based on a system designed for the 1700's. Electoral College, and the loss of the concept of "Confederation" which would empower the states.
Domination of the media by 5 or 6 collusive entities... and a failure of the anti trust laws. "The Mushroom Syndrome". ( Feed them lots of manure, and keep them in the dark.)
Today... Oct 24 may be the biggest Stock Market Day in history. Do we blame it on the people?...
Do we do it to ourselves? Maybe... but as to the question of how to change the system? To Vote? More likely anarchy, I think.
So while I don't disagree with the concept of personal responsibility, it begs the question... How?
"Unfortunately, many people still think that if the bank is willing to lend you the money, then you must be able to afford the loan."
That is one huge problem -- people assumed that banks were fiscally conservative.
It's a huge-er problem today, now that people are losing trust in the banks. Trust in banks is one of the foundations of capitalism.
The solution, if you want to save capitalism, isn't to berate people who took on bad loans. Rather, it's to force the banks to be responsible, so that the mass of people can trust them.
The solution, if you, like me, wish to see capitalism partially destroyed, and the speculators and bankers punished, by tossing them into prison for a few years, will be to continue to bail out the people at the top, and punish the people at the bottom.
Soon, we'll learn to despise the banks, and how to subsist without credit. The available paths to better employment and wages is radical unions, radical community self-help institutions, and radical politics.

sounds like me you dont know how to count. I've played the game every day online since it started, 10 plays per day. All it does is make you land on the same spaces over and over again. It will never roll the number you need to collect the final property of the group. I now land on the same properties every trip around the board.
Is it possible to use a cafetiere espresso coffee pot for distillation purposes ? How it works is the steam rises in the lower chamber and condenses in the upper chamber. I dont know if puitting charcoal where the coffee grounds usually go might help either.
I have a lot to say about the mortgage industry. But to put a tourniquet on the current situation would require the industry to put its greed and avarice in check. We need to have an unprecendented rate freeze for current mortgages that are or will be adjusting to a higher rate mortgage. If they adjust to lower rates, let them and leave them alone. Focus on the loans that are putting the balance of the economy in jeopardy. If the current lenders would work with its customers and keep them from going into forclosure by keeping them at their introductory rate terms, or slightly lower rate terms because of job loss or other economic displacment, we've conquered half the battle. We can then focus on revamping the whole industry, and then refinance those loans into fixed rate mortgages.
