  • 8 Nifty Tips for Getting the Most from an All-You-Can Eat Buffet   17 years 27 weeks ago

Oh, lordy - Indian buffets are my weakness. There's one in North Seattle that makes butter chicken that MUST contain crack. My trick is to go light on the carbs. Rice and bread just fill you up.

I always tip if the servers are courteous about the service. They're not really doing any less than they would at a normal restaurant. They've got to bring out the buckets of food, clean up the dining area. etc. Plus, removing plates - I mean, people go back for fourth rounds of food at buffets. And the servers have to clear all those plate. No. I'm a-tippin' fo sho.

Me and my work mates patronize a couple of mostly Asian buffets here in Silicon Valley. One of my pet annoyances is the folks who cherry pick the beef/shrimp/chicken/whatever out of the stir fry or casserole, leaving the vegies.

If you're not there when the dish is put out, you are scratching your head wondering what that pan full of onions and green peppers was supposed to be...

    Fun article!

  • The Upside of an Economic Downturn?   17 years 27 weeks ago

I think we have yet to see exactly how all of this is going to play out. I do agree with the commenter who pointed out that our current economy is a bit different than when we've experienced recessions and depressions in the past. Our culture is no longer agrarian; therefore, it is harder and often more expensive for people to produce their own foods and goods. On the other hand, even urban people found ways to be quite thrifty during WWII rationing. Plus, many planted gardens in small spaces. What can be done once can be one again.

Perhaps, our economy will change again so that once again people can eat healthier food, plus get the health benefits of gardening. I also hope that sewing will become more economical again, as I enjoy pretending that I can sew a straight seam.

At any rate, creativity and looking for the good side is always helpful. Thanks for your encouraging thoughts.

I don't mind tipping at a buffet, but giving the same 15-20 percent as expected for full service seems a bit extreme. Isn't a dollar or two (roughly 10 percent) plenty for clearing plates and refilling drinks? If a server isn't polite or attentive, why reward bad behavior? Honestly I'd rather keep my cash, refill my own drinks and pile up the plates on a tray if the tabletop is big enough. The bottom line is that a gratuity is a way of saying "thank you" and if there isn't much done or it isn't done well, what is there to be thankful for? Waiters have a tough job for sure, but we all have to make do with whatever money we get. Why can't successful eateries pay their staff a better hourly wage?

If you have boardwalk right now, you have won! What part of that do you not understand? Park place is one of the most common pieces. I have six right now. You could probably find them in a garbage can. Why would you waste the chance to get a million dollars? jeez sister, share the wealth!

I just received the Electric Company piece. Not sure I have ever seen it and it needs to be paired with another piece. What is the other piece and can you confirm that the other piece is the harder of the two to get? Thanks

Great article and great sense of humor! Our daughter is 3 and way too picky of an eater so a buffet may be the way to go!

Sushi buffets (good sushi) are some of the best dining bargains out there. Even though the price can be higher than American food buffets, I tend to get more value out of it, and I don't have to stuff myself sick to feel like I got my money's worth.

Of course, I'm also the girl who's gotten applause for pretty much eating my weight in cheesecake at one Vegas buffet. So take my opinion with a grain of salt...

Great post--there are heroes all around us, some visible and some less so. if you have a minute, check out one of my less visible heroes at Wider Opportunities for Women (www.wowonline.org) and see what they're doing to change the conversation in the U.S. They've been leading efforts to change policies and programs at the federal and state levels so we can focus on what it means for a family to be self-sufficient and sustainable. That's not our current 'poverty line' and must include work supports like child care!

    Thanks again for great post!

  • Shadow Government Statistics - Is the government manipulating numbers to make the economy look better than it really is?   17 years 27 weeks ago

Overall, government stats and methodologies have been questioned for quite a few years. I'll admit that I'm on the skeptical side when it comes to their "changes" and "adjustments" - I mean a rent "substitute" for home prices, like you can buy and sell your home and jump in & out of apartments at will without any significant costs!

You don't have to be very old to notice that the CPI was the standard and that core was added as a side note, now only the Core is quoted in the media and you have to search for the overall number. So far nobody has mentioned the "adjustments" for improvements in items - a new car is safer than previous models, a new computer faster and a new TV has a better picture and sound. These advances are adjusted for by taking the current cost and discounting it for the improvement over the earlier item, i.e. a new $30,000 car with air bags is valued at $26,000 compared to a $27,000 car last year without air bags, the computer is $1,500 vs $1,000 but twice as fast so for infaltion purposes it's valued at $750... So even though the price you pay actually went up, for determining inflation they have "decreased". I understand how this has some validity but at the same time not reporting the unadjusted number is bogus as well.

They want a good consumer mentality, not a well informed population base - I mean look at basic financial education today!
People think Clinton had a surplus - only if you use all sources of income, including excess social security, and used only on budget expenses, no off budget, extraordiary items or debt repayment. To be fair it's far worse now.

P.S. I'm a banker and the Federal Governement couldn't get a real loan for anything at this point or in the last 20 years. If you changed the name and took its balance sheet and income statement, with the amounts changed from trillions & billions to millions & humdreds of thousands you couldn't get it a loan for your life. And we're surpised the "subprime" mess came about regardless of which party you blame.

One of the Chinese buffets in town has a number of seafood items on the buffet. It never fails that some guy, yes it is always a guy will wait until they deliver crab legs and attempt to take the entire steam tray bin with him on one plate.

I saw a guy do this and it reminded me of the tanqueray commerical where the cheezy looking guy is loading his plate with handfuls of shrimp at a swanky cocktail party.

    Please don't be "that guy".

We always tip the wait staff. They bring sodas, check the table constantly and remove all the plates so we don't have a mountain of used plates on the table.
There are other places were you might not even see the wait staff the entire time and you already paid. Those I would be less likely to tip.

Government and their poverty-inducing policies. If only we could be more like, say, Somalia, and have rogue bands of militia ruling everything. Then we could prosperously and with peace and tranquility.

So many people have participated in this wonderful cause I am going to have to get home tonight and start writing. There are so many wonderful organizations that support the impoverished but I myself like donating to my local shelters. I have seen high school classmates in these shelters, which reminds me that you never know what the future may hold for you. Remember to give because what comes around goes around!

  • Bar Stool Economics   17 years 27 weeks ago

The subprime borrower that loses a home should never have been offered that credit line in the first place. They didn't qualify for credit and they have a mortgage kept at a teaser rate (that is usually lower than what they would have to pay for rent) for the first year or so that only pays into the interest of their mortgage loan and not into the equity of the home. Meanwhile, all these subprime-boosted sales are artificially raising the cost of homes and as people are kicked out of homes they shouldn't have bought in the first place, the housing market collapses sending the wealthy into a tailspin as well because they actually invested in the equity of their homes that are now worth less than what they paid a year ago.

  • Why young investors should "Stay the Course" and continue to invest   17 years 27 weeks ago

I always like to tell friends that you don't have to be in the stock market 100% of the time to be in it for the long term. I encourage readers to not only use ETFs for cost benefits and diversity, but people should follow market volatility as well. Since markets fall 3 to 4 faster than they rise, individual price movements increase substantially. When this happens, volatility rises. Volatility can be measured across the total market through the VIX indicator. And when the VIX increases to a certain point, I sell. When it comes back in, I buy. I keep it that simple! In addition, you can also use stops to protect your positions.

Nonetheless, there is no law that says you have to be fully invested 100% of the time. Sometimes, it doesn't make economic sense.

My personal poverty-fighting heroes are libertarians, perhaps the most contrarian of all, because of their dedication to reducing/eliminating government, which is the primary creator of poverty in most societies (especially in America).
