  • Why do Facebook Ads not take me seriously?   17 years 29 weeks ago

I went from "in a relationship" to "engaged" to "married" on facebook. "Engaged" brought me billions of wedding planning ads. I didn't mind those so much because I'm a researcher and love finding new websites to support my current interests. But after the wedding and subsequent status update, the ads didn't apply or appeal to me any more than before "engaged."

I'm a newly married twenty-something. I am fairly fit, and very happy in my life and marriage. And yet every other ad is either about losing weight with the newest fad diet or about getting over a breakup. I've even gotten ads for buying the perfect engagement ring. (What in the world??) I too have voted down on every obnoxious ad but I think the voting system is an illusion.

The only thing that I've found that helps my frustration with these ads is Opera. I use the opera browser for facebooking: it allows me to block images! It takes a couple days to block all the banners (often you have to block them on each type of page you visit), but I've not seen a banner or picture in the sidebar ads in over a year. Huzzah!

  • Less Expensive Ways to Enjoy San Francisco   17 years 29 weeks ago

For that picnic in Crissy Field, you can go the expensive route and buy the food at the Crissy Field cafe (nice cafe run by the parks service) or you can go to the Marina Safeway and pick up everything you'll need.

Oh and... Margaret was dead-on about the hostel in Fort Mason. Without a doubt the nicest and most well-situated hostel I've ever seen. You will love going to sleep and waking up in this place. The location cannot be beat. If you're going the hostel route, you'll be sorry if you pass this one up. Did I mention it's great?

If you're coming with kids, definitely don't miss the Exploratorium, right next to the Palace of Fine Arts. Plan to do that in the early afternoon, then walk with the family over to Crissy Field for a picnic. It's one of the most family-friendly and idyllic parks in the city, right at the foot of the Golden Gate bridge. If everyone's energized after the picnic, then walk the over to Fort Point. It's a Civil War era fort at the base of the bridge, now a museum.

I don't have a family, but I'm a kid at heart, and I love to act like a tourist in my own city.

  • How Baking Soda Took My Bathroom from “Yuck” to Yes!   17 years 29 weeks ago
    PS

I forgot to add that I'm very excited to try the baking soda. I'm 9 weeks pregnant, and smells are driving me batty. I've been needing to clean my bathroom for a while, but the thought of combining the dirty bathroom smell with harsh fumes has had me wanting to invest in barf bags...

    Thanks! :)

I hadn't considered tile & grout cleaning. I'll try it.

What I did know is that baking soda in water cleans microwaves. Just put a little baking soda and water in a bowl or cup and microwave for 3-5 minutes (depending on the strength of your microwave and the age of the gunk inside). I usually do 1 part baking soda to 3 parts water--it doesn't take much. Remove the pasty miracle and wipe down the microwave. It might take a little experimentation in each case, but it's worth the effort.

  • What's the big deal about banks refusing to lend?   17 years 29 weeks ago

I agree with most of your points. But here is how it will affect me.

I'm unemployed, I'm an IT project manager by trade. Businesses tend to borrow money to upgrade their IT infrastructures.

I have a son who is a recent college graduate. He appears poised to get his first "real job". His problem will be transportation. How does he borrow money to buy a car?

My daughter (in HS) works for a local business. They depend upon credit to manage their cashflow. If she looses the job because of the the current crisis (very possible), I loose because her expenses become my expenses......

I use baking soda to clean my sink and stovetop. Works wonders. Also, vinegar does a bang up job getting the shower sparkling. Our showers were very stained because of iron in our water and had tons of that icky "shower residue" left by our home's previous owners. I used straight vinegar and a brush and it all came off. In that moment, I became believer in natural products.

  • 10 Important Signs That Your Job Sucks   17 years 29 weeks ago

Wonderful post Troy! I currently have many of these feelings at my current job and have been actively looking for a career change. It is so easy to get caught up in the daily grind and continue to do what we are doing at a job that we despise. I think one reason is because it is a comfort zone and another because most of us don't really know what we want. Either way sometimes we just need to sit back and get an overall view of how things really are and just do what it takes to get our butts in gear to do something about it. Easier said than done though - I know. Remember the definition of insanity - "doing the same thing over and over expecting different results." I'm working on a website that will allow us to go whine about our jobs and will be both comical and serious - should be a lot of fun and I will need much input to tweak when it goes live. Bookmark it and check back from time to time to see when it launches. Good luck everybody!

I used it on my daughter's white cotton cardigan, and it stained it yellow! It got out the original stain, but then the yellow spot it left was permanent! I haven't tried Oxi-Clean's portable sprtizer. Does anyone know how that performs on whites?

  • 16 Ways to Make Your Clothes Last Longer Without Spending Big   17 years 29 weeks ago

Microwave your socks (you do not need to wet the socks) for 30 seconds with a cup of water (water in a cup will absorb excess of microwave radiation). Microwaves kills bacteria/fungi so the socks are good enough to be worn the second without washing. The same trick (but remember to have a glass/cup with water) works with stinky towels, etc. Be careful, never leave microwave alone while refreshing your socks!

Good tips, but hard to understand how air drying isn't one of the top items.

Black is the perfect "color" for all ages.

Bleach can be rough on fibers, shortening their life.

  • Financial Peace in Hard Times   17 years 29 weeks ago

I lived a strikingly similiar summer with my Mother who also became seriously ill around April. Ten hospitilizations in 4 months, numerous trips to Dr. appointments, errand running, checking in, etc., etc., etc..... We blew through our summer fund before the end of summer was over BUT am I glad that we had the money, because we did not go into debt during that very stressful time. My Mom is stable now and coincidentally so is my life. ;) I truly learned the immense value of having an emergency account and a summer account that covers my wages over the summer. I hope you know that the help that you have given/give your Mom means more to her than anything in the world and one day your kindness will be given back to you two-fold. Thanks for sharing your experience!

    LOL

I love how bill states its purpose in the first paragraph:

"To amend section 712 of the Employee Retirement Income
Security Act of 1974, section 2705 of the Public Health
Service Act, section 9812 of the Internal Revenue Code
of 1986 to require equity in the provision of mental
health and substance-related disorder benefits under
group health plans, to prohibit discrimination on the
basis of genetic information with respect to health insurance
and employment, and for other purposes."

I guess the "other purposes" is the main purpose? LOL

  • But is it ART?   17 years 29 weeks ago

I have about 10 pieces of original art I've purchased off eBay, I love each and every one of them and couldn't care less that no one I know has heard of the artists.

I now have a relationship with one of the artists; I've even commissioned a piece from him.

I think it's an absolutely fantastic place to get original art - I could never possibly hang a print on my wall again.

  • How to Erase Your Medical Debt   17 years 29 weeks ago

This really works. I was a full time college student with disaster medical insurance. I ended up having to have lung surgery and my insurance refused to foot the bill, citing pre-existing condition since I had been treated for this kind of thing before with a different insurance company. The total bill was somewhere between 40-60,000.
Since I was a college student and made probably a max of 6,000 a year working part time, the hospital and clinic dropped their entire bill. Unfortunately, hospitals are sneaky and different departments bill seperately. I am still paying off about 9,000 4 years later. The worst part, the bills were sent to collections and now they are trying to make me pay INTEREST.

  • What's the big deal about banks refusing to lend?   17 years 29 weeks ago

The big deal is that the dollar will continue to decline in value and eventually become worthless thanks to the fractional reserve banking we are subjected to. We've propped up approx. 300 million people on a false economy that will inevitably collapse. Just because business can grow faster by borrowing money doesn't make it a good thing.

  • What's the big deal about banks refusing to lend?   17 years 29 weeks ago

Yes ... if Barney Franks, Maxine Waters & Chris Dodd's didn't stop the republicans from reigning in the GSE's (regulating)- Freddie & Fannie -- who knows!

  • What's the big deal about banks refusing to lend?   17 years 29 weeks ago

Banks are in the business to lend money, large or small, they must lend money, other industries lend money also like insurance companies, union pension funds, investment banks, etc., the only question is how much and at what interest rate. Banks will lend money to farmers if they are a good risk same with utility companies, which by the way can issue bonds just like large corporations, that's how banks make money it just might not be at 6 or 7%, but maybe at 9 or 10% you can get money. Home loans use to be 18% at one time, and now a good risk borrower can still get a loan for 6%, it all about risk for the lender which will determine what business or person gets a loan.
