  • How Baking Soda Took My Bathroom from “Yuck” to Yes!   17 years 31 weeks ago

The fiberglass bathtubs when we bought our house were all gray and nasty. I thought they had paint dumped in them. None of the toxic cleaners would make a dent.

Lemon juice and baking soda with a scrub brush and a magic eraser and they both looked like new. Considering we were thinking about removing and replacing both tubs this was a huge savings.

Another trick that worked pretty well. The toilets were all covered under the rim with rust, water deposit and who knows what else. It would not come off no matter what I used. I got a bar of lava pumice soap and a cheap pumice stone from the beauty aisle and a good pair of rubber gloves. What the lava bar didn't break loose or scrub off the pumice stone did.

I use baking soda and vinegar on everything from stains on our clothing to toilets! I also use it on the counters and to clean the tubs/shower stalls. I found that I was wasting too much by pouring it out of the box, so I went to the dollar store and purchased a parmesan cheese shaker container and use it to sprinkle baking soda in areas I'm cleaning! Works great and doesn't come out in big clumps or piles.

Go with a shopping list in hand and don't ever divert from it. Anything else you feel like buying, write on another paper and think over at home before adding it to your next shopping list.

I have recently realized that baking soda & vinegar are all you need to clean almost anything. It is great to no longer spend money on more expensive and more toxic cleaning products.

We have a running joke in our house...my husband thinks pepto bismol cures everything and I think baking soda cleans everything!

This weekend my hubby asked what we had to clean the shower with and then he answered his own question "baking soda". :)

I have this huge box sitting on the counter right now. It will take red coolaid stains out of counter tops and off your hands too! It really is amazing stuff. There are a lot of websites out there that will tell you what all you can use it for.

I keep telling myself I need a new pair of brown boots. Actually, I don't. I have a very nice pair of brown shoes I can wear to work. I just WANT brown boots.

They also display ads based on the location your computer is pinging from...when I was in Dominican Republic, I checked my FB and all the ads were in spanish (none of my demograhic info was set to the Dominican Republic)

  • Root cause of the financial crisis   17 years 31 weeks ago

There are several oversight committees already in place that should have caught this banking problem. There is no accountability from anyone in the government. Many senators have spoken about their concerns about these institutions, but have been ignored because of partisan politics. To state the FDA is protecting us is another testament of FAILURE to yet another government agency not protecting us.
(example: not testing GMO Foods and not requiring them to be labeled as such.) Other countries require labeling of Genetically Modified Organisms and refuse to buy it. They are watching to see what happens to us guinnea pigs in the United States. The problem is where is the accountablility and our protection that our CONSTITUTION provides us? We are the people, but as long as there is no accountability and they can keep us seperated by dividing us through partisan politics we stay distracted. Then politics goes on as usual. Some of the regulation allowing anyone and everyone to get a loan got us into this mess. Sometimes we don't need the government involvement, especially when they think they know what is in our best interest. Buyer Beware!!!

All-homemade is a goal, but I'm switching slowly.  This was one thing I tried that got amazing results, so I'm hooked.  Each homemade remedy might not work as well, so it will be a gradual switch to only those homemade remedies that give me better results.

And the bleach idea is something I have considered, but with the fumes not being that healthy, and my kids walking across with bare feet, I have to be careful.  Two of my guys have eczema and are very, very sensitive to bleach.  This just wasn't an option for me.  The baking soda needed no time to sit, I just sprinkled and lightly rubbed the toothbrush in.  Little to no rinsing was what got me hooked!

Wow, I can't believe how well that worked. As soon as I use up the last of my cleaning products, I'm switching to all "homemade." It's amazing how easy they are to use!

If you just "paint" the mold with bleach it disappears inside an hour with no scrubbing. It smells bad but its easer.

  • Behind the Times - I learn about Keep the Change   17 years 31 weeks ago

I have been using Keep the Change for almost a year now and am finding I have lost money in the long run.

My socioeconomic status is that I have recently graduated college and use my debit card sparingly. Every few days or so I check my BOA account and see a notice of how much I have saved this month on Keep the Change. The reality of it is that the money I have 'saved' was just money transfered from my checking to the savings. On top of that the bank takes out a $3.00 US fee every month to run this service.

In essence, I lose $3.00 a month just to have my money brought from one account to another. I read above that someone mentioned BOA will match 5% of your savings. If that 5% match is not over $3.00 (meaning you didn't save more then $60.00 a month in your Keep the Change account) you just lost money.

If my information is misplaced, please someone correct me.

    Thanks
    Daniel

Nice blog! Your photo on this post made me do a double-take: I know that CVS sign! It's at one of their stores here in Chicago at a busy Northwest Side intersection. Never thought a photo of it would pop up on a personal finance blog!

I know I can get carried away by the sight of a 50% off pair of fuschia slingbacks as much as the next girl (well who wouldn't) but this kind of good ole fashioned sense is what keeps my bank account in the positive..
Gotta be Heinz ketchup though the others were bleeeugh!
