All cleaning products are a sham. No reason to ever buy anything that's not one of those three ingredients

Baking soda will clean ANYTHING! For some reason, my bathroom sink drain tends to build rust. I take a potato, cut it in half and then dig a few holes the meat of it. I rub baking soda onto the potato (the holes allow it to collect inside the potato) and then rub the potato onto the rust stain. It works wonders! It sucks to waste a potato like that, but we usually buy new potatoes in bulk so it's not a large one.

I don't intend to buy any cleaning products anymore. Between baking soda, vinegar and microfiber cloths, there's just no need for toxic chemicals. I'm going to use the bottles that I have to mix my own cleaning products. I'd even like to try making my own laundry detergent.

Can baking soda be used to clean toilet bowl too?

I had a similar experience! I tried for months to clean my stove top with all sorts of nasty cleaners specially labeled for the job. I tried and tried, but finally figured that my lovely stove top was gone for good. Then I tried some baking soda one day since I had it out. The stain that wouldn't budge before started coming up like magic! Now I use it all around the house, including in my shower as well. And those expensive, poisonous, worthless cleaners? We've gotten rid of them -- passed them along to people we know who have yet to see the light. (Though, hey, we've tried to convince them!)

That's some pretty dramatic evidence, Linsey. And of course the price can't be beat, which is always a bonus in my book.

  • Root cause of the financial crisis   17 years 30 weeks ago

There are many root causes. Certainly, dumping any reasonable requirement for loan qualification, is a big one.

All because of Political Correctness. Can't be calling me a racist, after all.

Another major one is: Alan Greenspan. He will go down in history as a dark blot and major cause in this fiasco. And, not that it's important, but he was a Clinton appointee.

Many causes going back almost 100 years. Too many to list. But it going to be a hell of a storm. Hold on!

  • Now It's Easier than Ever to Cut the Cable   17 years 30 weeks ago

I enjoyed your post. I recently went to my cable company asking for an analysis of my bill and how I could add HBO without adding cost. The rep told me I could add all of the HBO's and ten other digital channels for $10 a month for six months. No talk about what it would cost on month #7. Probably a balloon payment!
No way, I said, I'll keep Netflix and choose which movies and TV shows I want to watch.

Keep up the good work! I love your blog!

  • Why do Facebook Ads not take me seriously?   17 years 30 weeks ago

Perhaps the male-enhancement ad was meant for a boyfriend or husband. After all, you are, in the advertising world, an important influencer!

That is so true about shopping when there is a sale. I find that I buy more stuff because there is a "good sale" even though I did not NEED the item before walking into the store or browsing the online coupon sites.

I wish I would have stumbled across this post months ago when the conversation was still hot... but I see many incorrect conclusions in the preceeding comments. For those that call the article fanciful b/c there is no 59% tax bracket... the article doesn't claim this to be the case. It doesn't say the tenth man makes 100 and spends 59 on beer... he pays 59% of the taxes... of the total governement pie. 25% of his income paid in taxes may well equate to 59% of government spending... I haven't looked to confirm this as it doesn't change the moral of the story. I understand that we need to protect and develop the lower and middle classes... but we also need to reward the rich... these are the people striking out on their own and innovating. These are the people mortgaging their homes to start small businesses... if they fail they lose everything... so if they win they should have everything to gain. For those receiving a monthly, bi-weekly, or weekly paycheck... don't take for granted the security in that. And to those who say these people won't move overseas... you're right, they won't. But that doesn't mean the innovation won't. Stop rewarding risk taking and people stop taking risk. The beauty of this country is that it rewards tinkering.

Thanks for the reinforcement. We've been doing these things for years out of necessity and they DO work. Keep on writing.

    Oy!

I'm 22, female and I get PROMISE RINGS either myspace or facebook. Oh ya, it's really annoying.

Don't let something like this bother you. I got "male enhancement" stuff once and I don't even have the parts for it- it's just computer generated junk.

  • Why Treasury Bills Are Always a Worthwhile Investment   17 years 30 weeks ago

Yeah, the new Treasury Direct seems to be just for individuals.  The old Treasury Direct was somewhat more flexible (at least about joint ownership), but I think even it was not set up for anything but ownership by natural people.

Great points from not only the financial but also the health perspective. Even the salads in restaurants can not compete home made food. Especially those who wants to lose weight, this is an excellent way to control the calorie in.

Good post. Unfortunately, though, it seems lately some of the generic and store brand named items cost almost as much as the brand name items.

  • Why is it so expensive to be healthy?   17 years 30 weeks ago

I breast-fed my first two children...I was not able to breast feed my 3rd for health reasons. My oldest has struggled with her weight since she started elementary school. My two younger ones are skinny as rails (yes, the one who had to be bottle fed is skinny.) This, in part, is due to their genes. And yes, it is hard to eat healthy these days. I spend, on average, $250.00 per week to feed a family of 5 nutrionally sound foods. I would spend less if I fed my family "junk" food. This is the "truth".

  • Let things go   17 years 30 weeks ago

If there's something in your life that's causing trouble or pain right now, letting go is not the solution.  Things in your present need to be dealt with, one way or another.

Letting go is for the past--so you can give your proper attention to the present.

  • Bar Stool Economics   17 years 30 weeks ago

OK show me a rich man that would repeatedly pay 59 dollars for the same beer that is sold for as little as 1 dollar to someone else. The rich man would just buy the beer factory and ship it overseas to save $$$ on wages and materials. He would then sell the beer to his friends while getting government subsidies for helping the poor and tax breaks for selling in the US. He would make sure everything went the way he wanted by sending lobbyists to congress. The people, buying the beer, would have to make up the difference.

Sound like what has happened to the USA in the past eight years? Oh and how did deregulation of the mortgage industry work out? Do the Republicans now have to act like Liberals to bail out the stock market? Funny I was told by Bush that we had a strong economy all the way up to this point, and in his speech the dumbass said this problem started before he was elected. Well what the hell was he going to do about it for the pas eight years?

David R. Kamerschen, Ph.D. is a dumbass or just overpaid or both.

  • Let things go   17 years 30 weeks ago
    ...

I'm want to stop feeling bitter and I want to have confidence & trust in my partner again after the lies & betray & cheating.

I want to feel carefree again and rid off this heavy heart.

I want to get off the see-saw.

  • Let things go   17 years 30 weeks ago

I just cannot figure out what to do - it's like I'm like at the see-saw of life, sometimes everything's up, or can quickly fall down again.

I found previously at the start our date with a person that this person was cheating on the married partner. I accepted & put it aside what the person did because it was before our time together.

Then exactly 1mth ago I caught the person cheating behind my back. Now I feel betrayed & cheated by the person I love, and feeling very cautious everyday when around with. I thought the cheating behind my back was a one off instance, until during our talk I found out it was the 3rd time.

Now I'm slowly finding out that there were more cheating behind the previous partner's back.

I had my suspicions once during our time together, and we had a big argument but I was made to be weak for suspecting such things. I also had no proof then.

I finally confronted him during the most recent argument with proof. I had the proof in had for a while before producing it. The person tried to comfort me, and calm me down. The person resisted admitted the wrongdoing. I only watched & observed. Till the moment I displayed the evidence, that's only when the person crumbled.

We had a deep talk & this person had a remorseful time admitting the wrongdoings and was filled with guilt to what was done to me and the previous partner. It was also admitted that there were other nasty things bottled up that cannot be shared. I do not know if these were during my time or with the previous partner.

I keep recalling the days & moments when the all events of the cheating happenned - I cannot understand how did this person find it in the heart to lie into my face during and after our arguments.

But when my mind's triggered by something, I have the need to clarify things instead of letting it eat me inside. The truth hurts both of us but my window of opportuniy to discuss more with my partner has closed. My partner seems to be going around either in denial now or trying the best to not bring up the argument anymore because the nasty things that was done - the deep talk we had learning the truth was really, really hurtful for my partner.

I'm scared - is this a recurring pattern? Is the person a constant liar? I'm trying to reopen my heart & build the confidence again but my partner shuts me down.

On good times, I can almost feel light & having let it go and look forward to the present & future together. When I'm reminded of it by something, I fall down. And this cycle has been going on for exactly one month today.

I do not know what to do & I want to get off the bloody see-saw.
