  • Quickly Remove Scratches From CDs and DVDs   17 years 32 weeks ago

I tried to reinstall windows, but my CD was hopelessly scratched. Brasso saved the say. It really does work. Use an old rag or a sock and buff it from the inside to the outside edge. Don't use circular motions. For a really bad CD slather it on and buff it for a while. Wash the CD with tap water afterward.

We have three kids (5, almost 4, and 2) and would like to learn some easy tips that would benefit the environment as well as ourselves. And if you give us a copy, we promise to pass it along to our friends with families ranging from one child to six. Thanks for the opportunity!

I hadn't heard of this book until I read your review. Sounds great, so count me in!

  • Remove Car Dents Quickly and Cheaply   17 years 32 weeks ago

Hi to every one. I have a loved Chevy Malibu 2005 and from nowhere a dent 2x2 appeared on top of the back drivers window. I am going to try Method 2. Can anyone tell me if DUST Remover is the same as the mencioned Air Duster? Do you think that no damage to the paint will be caused? Thank you! Any tip/answer is welcomed.

  • Why there's no reason NOT to buy store brand baby formula.   17 years 32 weeks ago

Ok so we know the ingredients are similar.

But what DON'T we know. Well, I still don't know WHERE the milk comes from in any of the formulas. Does the milk come from cows injected with Bovine Growth Hormone (BGH)?

I know that the milk I drink says on the label, "Not from BGH injected cows". So I probably don't want my 3 month old baby ingesting the stuff either.

It's not always about what you DO see on the labels, it's sometimes what you don't see...

I heard this was a great book. I love scouring the internet but sometimes there is nothing better than curling up with a great book...on a great subject.

This sounds like a valuable resource. Like many, I'm trying to balance green vs time vs money. This is likely to help.

  • How to Launder Money   17 years 32 weeks ago

Yep.  They used just those sorts of simple schemes to explain away their ill-gotten gains.  But then they foolishly didn't pay taxes on it, which is sort of the whole point--it's what turns illicite money into legit money.

  • Fund your own sabbatical   17 years 32 weeks ago

As a full-time storyteller, I'm in the process of designing my own sabbatical, trying to figure out how to fund a trip to do research in folklore archives of another country (I've got an official invitation, having asked for it). Finding grants has been tricky--my goals don't seem to fit into those of funding agencies. I've begun saving so I can fund the trip on my own. I have to save enough to pay my bills at home while I'm gone as well as the expenses on the actual research trip. I began with the modest goal of three months, but even that has shrunk down to one month. I'll fight hard for that much.

One idea that I keep coming back to with this sabbatical is that a change is as good as a rest.

Anybody have ideas on saving/funding beyond what's in the excellent blog post?

sounds like a good, practical book with easy to follow advise. I always hesitated about "green" books that were merely hidden sales pitches for the more expensive allegedly earth friendly products, but this book sounds like legit. Thanks for the contest!

My little family and I are planning on moving out to Kentucky from Baltimore in the near future. We went out there to visit family and fell in love with a house while house hunting. We're now trying to quickly sell our house here so we can start our new life there.

We have 2 kids (3 1/2 yrs and 1 yr) and we are moving to the country to learn to live more self sufficiently. We have a book by John Seymor called "The Self-Sufficient Life and How To Live It". This will be our mock bible once we move onto to our 2 acre home.

We are constantly looking for ways to employ the 3 R's and other ways to be green like putting a brick in the toilet tank and change all the light bulbs. We would love for our kids to be brought up this way, but those of you who have kids know how hard it is to find creative stuff to do, much less be green about it.

This sounds like the perfect book to involve everyone and have fun doing it. Thanks for the heads up!

I've been trying to green up my household and life lately. This book sounds like it has a lot of information and tips. I like how it addresses specific times/situations and has a Green Goal Setting schedule. I need it broken down into smaller, more doable parts like that.

  • The "Pa-Doink" Principle of Personal Savings   17 years 32 weeks ago

I certainly agree and love the title! I'm going to remind myself of the "pa-doink" principle the next time that I get discouraged about sending a tiny bit of money off to savings!

If I don't win, it still sounds like a book I would probably purchase. Trying my best to set a good example for my 2 year old daughter as she is copying everything I do now. Never too early to start teaching them good habits!

One of the things I'd like to see in a book like this is attention paid to socially responsible investing. Even your savings account can do good for the world if properly chosen. I work for ShoreBank (http://shorebankdirect.sbk.com/) - where the money you invest into a HYSA not only gets you 3.5% interest, but also the satisfaction of knowing that your investment is being used for environmentally and socially responsible projects.

  • Family Businesses - The World's Second Oldest Business Model   17 years 32 weeks ago

This is a great article on Family Business, Mary. I found it informative and interesting. My own business, a family one, only survived for twelve years, but it did include two generations working in it. It was a good experience for our son when he went on to his next position. Keep up the good work, Mary!

I've been going green for 18 months or so. Natural and organic food and cleaning products. Recycling. Giving up bottled water. I'm curious to know what other tips there are, especially in home design (hopefully without breaking the bank!). I'll be checking my local library for sure!
