  • How does the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac bailout affect you?   17 years 34 weeks ago

Dear God no more Greenspan, does everybody forget that he created two massive asset bubbles, fist the dot-com bubble now the mortgage bubble. He was warned years in advance of the pending storm but chose to ignore the whole thing and because of this and all the foreign debt we have,(by the way the entire Beijing Olympics was payed for by the interest payments that China gets form all the US T-bills it has) we have to bail out these companies or foreign countries will no longer invest in our financial companies and that will bring our credit markets to stop.

I didn't see anything in the article about Fannie and Freddie *bonds*. Are the owners of these going to be winners, losers, or neutral?

  • Real Estate Appraisals - Ten things most people just don't understand about them   17 years 34 weeks ago

You're right, Turdy, that the appraised value of a property should be/MUST be completely independent of and not influenced by any expectation.

It sounds as though you're hoping to get rid of your PMI payment, which is insurance on the mortgage itself. Or is it your homeowner's insurance you're hoping to reduce? If it's the PMI you're hoping to get rid of, talk with your lender as that is very possible depending on the terms of your mortgage and how much equity you've built up.

If it's the homeowner's insurance, than this is something you'd really want to think over carefully, and talk over with a well-qualified independent insurance advisor,as it could be a false economy should anything happen to your home.

Raising your deductible is always an option, but again, you need some good advice based on the specifics of your situation.

I agree.  They aren't the most healthy (although modifications can be made.)  If you're concerned about excess, I always find that by pairing the soups or the pasta with a nice side of steamed veggies or a garden salad, you can eat more for less fat and calories.  Everything in moderation.

Your picture scared me at my first glance. :)
And if I can contribute anything it would be try to locate a trustworthy private seller when it's possible. Base on that, you can get a lot of extra useful information beside the history report.

Retirees benefit, as their incomes will rise, when the Fed is forced to begin raising rates. As the Fed raises rates, inflation will decline, an added bonus for retirees.

Good topic. Good recipes. Other than the soups, squash, and veggies & rice, these aren't exactly the most healthy dishes. Although I am a HUGE fan of cheese and pasta, in large quantities they aren't exactly great for your waistline.

Great topic. I'd like more info on meatless, healthier dishes, though.

Hi -- these are terrific. I've made eggplant parmesan very similarly to your recipe and it is great! I'd love some ideas on no-milk/cheese type meals for a kid who is very lactose intolerant and a very unwilling veggie eater! Soy milk and soy cheeses just don't taste the same.

    Yum

These are great ideas. I think I'm going to have peanut butter veggies and rice tonight! Thanks!

Winners - you forgot the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac CEOs and other executives and their golden parachutes who bankrupted the company then left for their mansions and country clubs. Thanks, guys!

These are definitely mouthwatering ideas! Eggplant parmesan has been a favorite of mine for many years and tomato soup + grilled cheese never ceases to satisfy.

I don't understand what the beef is about with DRLs. Ever since I read about the idea about 20 years ago, I've turned my lights on myself in the interest of safety. Of course, this caused me plenty of grief as I've forgotten to turn them off and come back to a dead battery. Thankfully, my current car reminds to me turn them off.

My mechanic in our small town says he won't work on foreign cars. He's honest about when he says he doesn't know how. So, I have never owned a foreign car. This article makes me think I never will. I live too far out in the sticks to have a high maintenance car.

Although, not vegetarians, my husband and I eat very little meat, for a variety of reasons. I love regular beans, but sometimes I forget to soak them. So some evenings I turn to lentils. I think lentils have gotten a bad rap, they're wonderful! I especially love the red kind, they cook up quicker and are very creamy. I can make a nice spicy dahl in less time then it takes for the brown rice to cook.

Thanks for reminding me how much I love homemade soup! It's getting to be that time of year again. Oh, and I'm definitely going to have to try the eggplant burger idea.

  • Plumas County: Hidden (Cheaper) California   17 years 34 weeks ago

OK, perhaps this is an old gripe, but nontheless.....

Those of us who have always lived in a rural environment would really appreciate it if, when you upscale urban professionals decide to "rough it", you wouldn't jack up the real estate prices to the point where old-school locals are forced into rural ghettos.

In my rural county (Humboldt) only 15% of the population can now afford to buy a home, thanks largely to the influx of Bay Area retirees, 2nd home owners, and transplants. I know, I know, you are just THRILLED at what you can get for the money you used to spend in (fill in the blank overpriced urban setting). But when you spend $300k for a home (that 5 years ago went for $150k) where the average income is $30k can you see where average folk might have a hard time?

So hey, love your good intentions, but think about how your very presence might be impacting those who have lived rurally for generations.

My wife and our 4 children live in a small renovated mobile home in less than 600 square feet, with only one bedroom, and no septic system. (We use a composting toilet) We are debt free.

Our home is small, but it is a nice upgrade from the army tent we all shared for 18 months, when we first bought our land, in the Ozark mountains on NW Arkansas.
My wife and I have a small bedroom, with a door for privacy--the children love sharing our living room that converts to sleeping space at night. They are homeschooled by day for a few hours, then are released to enjoy the rest of their day, reading, drawing, playing music,or just playing. I read to them in the evening, or we play card games, and they go to bed each night laughing, giggling, happy and content.

A decade ago, I was a financial planner in suburban Chicago, making a six figure living, but we traded it all in, and now live on less than $20k a year, which I earn working in internet marketing part time.

We drive old cars, but they get us into town to shop or to an occasional meal out or movie. We have the internet, and a phone and electricity, and free spring water piped directly into our house.

We have a imperfectly wonderful life, watching our beautiful children grow, and living life on our terms.
Why wait until you are old to enjoy life? Retire now while you're still able to enjoy it! Blessings!
