I try to set up separate accounts and slowly build over time. If you have short term goals, it's easier to set up short terms ways to save and then start over once those goals have been reached. I did that for a vacation coming up and already starting that vacation fund again for next year.

  • Save Over $100 a Year by Shaving with a Cutthroat Razor   16 years 40 weeks ago

The economics of this decision depend on how often you use up the cartridges for your Fusion/Mach3 whatever. I used 1 razor for three shaves (and yes facial hair DOES degrade the blade as it is similar in strength to copper wire of the same diameter).

If you go through 2 cartridges in a week, that is 104 razors per year or 26 packs of four blades per year, which at $14.00/per pack is $365 per year in blades. Buy a double edge razor and the blades cost less than 20 cents a blade rather than more than $3.00 a blade.

    The cutthroat is similarly economical.

The math = $365 * 30 = $10,950 provided they still make the same Fusion whatever blade 30 years from now (unlikely). Whereas a cutthroat NEVER has this problem (of obsolescence) and DE blades have been around for over 100 years using these methods you guard against the obsolescence issue.

Vets have gotten awfully good at guilt-tripping when you don't spend for top-of-the-line tests and treatments.

I am from a small town and had always gone to vets that mostly deal with large animals.

So when we moved to the city I just picked the vet closest to the house, and dealt with being treated like a bad person at every visit (really, do the cats need their teeth cleaned every year? How did they survive their first ten years without that?)

But when my (normally very cheap) boyfriend was going to unquestioningly lay down nearly $4000 for bladder surgery for the cat, I comparison-shopped and found a much cheaper ($1000 total for that specific treatment) and incidentally *much* more compassionate vet, who I can trust to tell me the truth about how beneficial treatments are and respect my budget.

I wish it were so easy to comparison-shop procedures at human doctors.

Great article. I just started budgeting by category 3 months ago and have found we spend much more monthly on our one dog and one cat than we thought.

I haven't made any adjustments in spending for them as I don't think I waste in this area, but it was eye-opening. Having said that, I think the pets add more to our lives than their cost.

Razor blades don't degrade from shaving; they corrode from the moisture that remains on the the blade after you're done shaving. So, if you dry a razor with a blow dryer and/or a towel when finished the blade will last a long, long time. An easier method for removing the moisture from a razor blade is to soak your razor in alcohol after each use.

I love all my pets, (2 dogs and 12--yes, 12--cats--all of whom are fixed!) especially since I can't have kids. I volunteer at one of our local no-kill shelters, too. I have been blessed that one of my many talents is cleaning out a litter box! Adopt a homeless animal! They are worth every penny!

I'll just parrot what some others have said about safety razors. They're fantastic, the replacement blades are MUCH cheaper, and, in my opinion, shave much better (I used to have to shave every day. Now I can almost have the same results if I shave every other day.) I contemplated a straight razor but I was just really worried about doing some damage so I thought this was a good compromise.

A cut-throat razor sounds like a dangerous way to go about shaving your beard. Why don't you try extending the life of your razor by drying it soon after you shave and storing it in a dry place? This will prevent it from rusting.

I could see choosing a cutthroat razor as a matter of preference, but you seem to have cooked the books a bit on the economics. If you only shave "twice a week" why would you buy four cartridges every six weeks and pay the maximum possible price for them? I shave daily with a Gillette Fusion and usually get 20-30 good shaves out of each blade. They really don't seem to work well until the second or third shave, but after that they seem to give me a pretty good shave for about a month. If you buy the blades at Costco or BJs, you can get about a dozen blades for around $25-$30. Now I do complain about that price, but $30 for a year's worth of razor blades sounds a lot better than the $121 that you quote in your example, and it changes the cost equation substantially.

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   16 years 40 weeks ago

hi i realize that your post is almost a month old, but i wanted to answer you just in case you hadn't signed up for direct deposit yet. the direct deposit takes about 2 payperiods to go into effect and once you have direct deposit you will receive your check 2 to 3 days earlier. If you signed up for the wireless alerts, you will receive a notification when your direct deposit has posted to your account. i hope this helps.

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   16 years 40 weeks ago

i actually work for a company that sells netspend cards and they're not half bad. i get them for free, since we sell them, but i have purchased them for other people. netspend cards are the alternative to individuals who hate banks and have less than perfect credit. they offer free direct deposit and free withdrawals when you have direct deposit and they also offer a savings account with a 5% interest rate, thats better than any bank out there. there are no overdraft fees and if you plan on using the card alot, you can sign up for a 9.95 a month plan to swipe as many times as you want. you can load up to $10,000 on a card and they can be used internationally. the only bad thing about them is their customer service line. it is virtually impossible for customers to speak to a live representative, but if you visit an authorized netspend location the associates there have a different number and can get you connected.

and for everyone who has received a netspend card and doesn't want it, just shred it. don't activate it and get on with your lives. these cards are not credit cards, there is no credit check, and they will not help or ruin your credit. they ask for your personal information when you activate it, to make sure its a match. if your ssn and your dl number dont match, they wont allow you to use it. oh and also, minors can't get cards. the people who received these cards were probably just on a mailing list and you received the card just like you would receive any other type of junk mail so get over it.

i practically wrote a book here, but i just had to respond to the many misconceptions about netspend cards. i think the author of the post should have done more investigating with actual netspend retailers instead of just going by what was read online.

  • In times like these, separate the want from the need.   16 years 40 weeks ago

Great post! However, I have to disagree on the tuna thing. Name brand can make a big difference and with the right coupons and sales can sometimes be a better deal. Some things like pasta or tomato sauce all taste the same, but I find the 5 cents more for a good brand like chicken of the sea or starkist is more than worth it. There's more tuna, less water, and it's less dry (I think it's fresher).

  • Will "forced frugality" last?   16 years 40 weeks ago

The free-spending people who were shocked at the amount they've saved by making their own coffee instead of buying a $5 latte every morning are NOT going to remain frugal. They measure their worth by how much they spend on brands they see advertised heavily.

Stop letting advertising drive your spending habits. Don't be "brand-loyal". (Analyze the cost per unit, and you'll find that a store brand is still usually cheaper than a name brand -- even if you use a coupon on the latter.)

Pets are great, but so much work. I recommend getting a Chinchilla. Like a rabbit/squirrel, so soft and best of all, nocturnal. When you go to work, he's sleeping. When you come home, he's wide awake and ready to play.

    Best,

So I just wanted to say THANKS to SOMEONE WITH SOME DANG SENSE!! LOL!! Have a Great Night!! I enjoyed your comment so much!! Some people I guess just need it laid out in black and white!! They make me crazy when they talk all this stuff and don't have a clue. I think that its not enough to really harm anything, but really didn't know this all like you put it out. I appreciate it and glad I know all the right facts on this!!! THANK YOU :))

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   16 years 40 weeks ago

If you want to stop getting things like these then you need to stop surfing the internet! Or change your ways... I know exactly where mine came from because I use my nickname when I surf the internet instead of using my birth given name and guess what name this "Unsolicited" card came in.... no go ahead take a guess; yes my nick name. Which probably explains the person who's dog got one. She probably signed up for some free coupons for pet products and gave the dogs name. If you wanna figure out what's junk comming from the internet surfing most computer using Americans do, try using a different first name or last name and when the junk mail in that name arrives in your post box, you'll know... TRASH IT. Additionally watch out for those "ONLINE SURVEY's" they'll get ya every time. Those are mailing list builders from beginning to end.

PS Sorry for the poor english.. country girl is my first language, english is my second.

For one what gives you the right to judge people!!! My GOODNESS people aren't motivated enough to do this!!! How do you know?? THEY ARE ON HERE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO DO FOR THIER LAWNS shhss!! And I don't think motor oil is next LULU!! This recipe has been around for a long time and it works!! So stop being so judgemental and keep your mean self to YOUR SELF!! BECAUSE WE (all on this site) DON'T NEED YOUR HATEFULL WORDS!! What are you mr * mrs know it all!!! Don't think you do myself!!! Everyone you mix all these ingredients together and get you a little sprayer one that connects to the end of your garden hose and it will mix with the water coming out. You don't have to be precisely right on the amount coming out. No need to water before or after just make sure you water everyday to keep your lawn nice and watered and to help the stuff go down into your lawn, ( DOES NOT HARM THE ENVIROMENT) Because its not enough to do any harm. ma not be organic but its OK!! THANK YOU AND I HOPE EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU HAVE A BEAUTIFUL NIGHT AND TOMORROW A BEATIFUL GREEN HEALTHY LAWN, THAT YOU CAN WALK THROUGH BARE FOOT!!! LOL :) ENJOY!!

While I agree it is the age-old story that Mom and Dad end up taking care of whatever critter the junior members of the family decide they want (and therefore has a great deal of truth to it), I do want to point out that you *can* get kids to be responsible pet owners. Yes, it takes some nagging. But pets are a great way to teach kids empathy and responsibility, especially since the costs are so very high when the kids mess up. My daughter was responsible for the cat box and feeding and she learned pretty quickly what was needed and expected - of course, the cat box was in her room at one point.

Kids need and deserve the chance to be responsible and helping them be responsible for a living creature will help them be responsible parents later on.

All these alternative shaving articles are getting to me. For ~$20 (at BJs) I buy a 52 pack of Gilette Plus disposables (two blades w/ lube strip). They last a year, shaving 5 to 7 days a week. They cut my heavy beard nice and close, and I never ever slit myself open. I take them on planes when I have to fly. I shave in the shower, very quickly. No fuss w/ sharpening or blade changing either. Time is money, right?
