Way to Reduce Stress - Karate!
With Karate, your attention must be focused on the pad or your partner to perfect technique and ensure accuracy. Coordinating a combination of kicks and power punches and reading your opponent's moves takes total concentration so your mind must be empty of all other thoughts. After an hour of intense focus and exercise your head becomes clearer and your body's had a great workout. Plus, you learn how to better defend yourself!

Relieving stress is a matter of resetting the brain to a different mode. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways, but the main point is to change the channel. Life is a series of events and circumstances...it's how you REACT to these events and circumstances that determine the effect they have on you. Say a tree falls in your yard and you have to get out there and chop it up...instead of moaning and complaining, look at it as a chance to get out in the fresh air and get some exercise. Say you lose your job...look at it as an opportunity to get a BETTER job. No matter what the circumstances, there are always several ways to look at it. Choose to find a positive course of action no matter what the source of the stress is.

Yoga, a long run, or a nice walk along the beach. However, if I need to let off steam, I go for a hard workout and listen to some loud music.

  • For a Frugal, Healthy Soap, Go With Goat Milk!   15 years 41 weeks ago

Reading this article made me miss my Nigerian Dwarf. She gave us the best milk. I had no idea goat's milk was good for eczema. I'm going to try it on my daughter. Thank you! My husband and I long ago threw out the liquid soap for bar. We've used some French kind, the name escapes me now. But we just ran out. I'll head off to my co op tomorrow and pick up some goat milk soap to give it a try.

Great article! I think where we mess up is looking at a savings account as our slush fund account. Quick books is imperative to tracking down all those dollars, and I agree with Everyday Tips, you are extremely organized to have that figured out.
Thanks for the motivation and good ideas.

  • How to Save Money at the Butcher's   15 years 41 weeks ago

I don't have a butcher in the town I live in, per se. But we have a good sized agricultural community. So a few families from church will get together and "go in" on a lamb or a cow, and divide the meat. I know it sounds pretty old school, but it's extremely fresh, almost always organic, grain fed, well taken care of, and yummy. The price is comparable to supermarket prices, sometimes a bit more, but the quality can't be beat. And this is the epitome of buying local. I haven't done this yet, but I'm thinking this spring we'll do a lamb. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Shop at a Sam's Club for low cost but fresh meat. The meat department there is only allowed to sell meat for 24 hours vs 3 days at other markets because they know most buyers are stores that are going to resell. They'll custom cut too and do special orders. Never had a problem with those guys!

The universal way. It's relaxing, healthy, increases endorphins, and it's free! Even Dear Abby approved.

  • Cutting the Grocery Bill: Reducing the Cost of a Good Spice Rack   15 years 41 weeks ago

Been frugal forever and gardened my whole life. The best way to cut spice expenses is to go to an Indian food grocer and buy your spices. They are far more fresh that what is found in a standard American grocery and cost far less. Then grow the fresh herbs you like and use a lot of in the summer and use it fresh - such as basil, dill, sage and rosemary. You'll eat a lot better and save too! Others have also mentioned online sites from which you can order.

Yoga and meditation work best for me. A few minutes of either seem to melt away my troubles.

  • 4 Signs Your Kids Might Be In Danger Online   15 years 41 weeks ago

Completely stupid. Just because your child knows how to turn on a computer or get on facebook doesn't mean hes in danger of the internet. It just shows they know how to work a computer. It's the adults job as a parent to decide to let their kids do it in the first place.

  • Is GDP Still Important?   15 years 41 weeks ago

The HPI was developed by economist and has been thoroughly research throughout the world. It is absolutely becoming a very possible replacement for the GDP.

The GDP is outdated and disproportionately represents measurements of "wealth" and "progress" throughout the world, here are a few reasons:

-The GDP is out of touch with the great environmental and social needs that are growing in the planet because the GDP does not register distribution of resources, inequities, and declines in well being as their representation of progress. Meaning, that the GDP fails to account for depletion of human and natural capital.

-Again, to build on the point that has been made throughout this article and comments; The GDP measures high levels of consumption, however, higher consumption that is detrimental to people's health and the environment is not a step towards development. (progress)

-MORE IMPORTANTLY the GDP does not represent the entire population of a country. For example, in 2005 in the United States PER CAPITA INCOME soared by 9 percent. The increase was attributed to the wealthiest 10 percent of the population. The bottom 90 percent experience a 0.6 percent decline. From 2000 to 2005 in Sudan the GDP has risen 23 percent, however, 600 000 people were at risk of acute famine from prolonged drought in 2001.

To be honest, I think it's a bit silly to dismiss these very real (in the sense that they apply to the real world) metrics that are picking up the slack of the shortcomings of traditional metrics.

The first thing I do is step back from my To Do list and prioritize what needs to be done. What can be done tomorrow?

Then I fix some tea, light a candle and escape for a cupful.

I imagine achieving the things I really want and think about small steps toward my goals.

If I'm in the car, I turn on the radio or sing my heart out if nothing but commercials is on.

    Running or yoga.

  • Ask the Readers: How Do You Relieve Stress? (Chance to win $20!)   15 years 41 weeks ago

Personally what works for me is exercise. My stress levels often go through the roof when I'm not getting enough movement. At the same time my thinking is sluggish and I struggle to take any sort of meaningful action. However, when I exercise this has a tendency to clear up my mind, thoughts and attitude. This relieves stress and has a tendency to focus me on solutions rather than problems.

I have also found that watching a sitcom or reading something funny can help relieve stress. However, nothing beats exercise :)

A Glass of wine works wonders, but especially if I share it with a friend and we get a vent a bit.
