  • All We Are Saying...Is Give Pabst A Chance.   15 years 42 weeks ago

I am in the camp that Coors, Bud, and Miller don't even taste good. I agree that the difference between a Coors Light and Key Light is not huge, but the difference between a Dogfishhead 90 minute IPA and a PBR is massive. I would rather drink three less beers to have something really good.

P.S. One day to Great American Beer Festival in Denver!

  • All We Are Saying...Is Give Pabst A Chance.   15 years 42 weeks ago

Good article. Somebody had to write it! Beer, like life, is better with variety. I like most kinds of beers, from micros to mass-markets; and some are better than others, in certain conditions. I certainly don't thirst for a heavy bock on a hot day. Though I can't attest to Pabst, I can endorse the heat-beating flavor of the occasional MGD, or a Miller High Life. Beer snobs, like wine snobs (and various other kinds of snobs), sacrifice true quality for status or image. Their loss.

  • Is GDP Still Important?   15 years 42 weeks ago

First, I am not an economist but here is my thought. It seems to me that if you were to put GDP on a personal level, you would essentially be measuring how many toys you have purchased and comparing that to how many toys other people have. That is not a true measure of health in my opinion. Others have alluded to the fact that infinite growth is not possible for many reasons: natural resources are finite; money 'should' be finite; needs 'should' be finite however what are truly wants many times are misconstrued at needs. Wealth does not equal happiness. Things don't equal happiness. Making a buck at the expense of others doesn't make happiness. Wealth and happiness appear to be linked but they are really not. So what is the purpose of GDP? Why are people who have a lot of stuff not happy? What is more important stuff or happiness? I think measures like this just further the consumer mentality and actually cause harm to the people in the nation. We become dogs constantly chasing our tail in order to get more stuff and support our economy (to do our part as an American citizen). Where is that getting us anyway???

  • Living Well on a Feast to Famine Income   15 years 42 weeks ago

Great article, Jennifer. Helps me feel at peace that I will still make it with a sporadic income when I start my life being self employed. And these are great guidelines to live by. Love the 'Feast to Famine' title.

I love darker beers and wheat beers and I tried Pabst Beer and it wasn't bad at all. I heard it tastes better on tap. The price is reasonable. My local grocery store was selling a 12-pk for $7.99. That's 2 six packs for $4 each. The taste is good and would highly recommend it especially if you are having a party or a bar-b-q

  • Credit Cards vs. Debit Cards: A Comprehensive Comparison   15 years 42 weeks ago

Articles like this really irritate me. I have read different versions of this same article half a dozen times and they all have the same fatal flaw: they totally ignore that debit cards can be used as credit cards WITH THE EXACT SAME PROTECTIONS!! If your debit card has a Visa or MC logo (and I've never seen one that didn't) you can run it as a credit card, sign for the purchase, and get all the benefits of a credit card while still staying out of debt.

Its like writing an article about buying a new car verses used and forgetting to mention that used is cheaper. It is such a huge feature, it is hard to understand why it isn't mentioned.

I take a break from whatever I'm doing that's causing me stress - often this involves grading papers or updating my budget (which I also blog about frequently) - and talk to somebody. Three times already this week, I've taken the time to quickly call up my parents or a friend just for a breather. Nothing like catching up and laugh with somebody I care about.

Of course, in this day and age, most people text or Tweet or update their Facebook pages to stay connected. I do too, but nothing replaces a phone call and actually talking to someone. If anything, being on the Internet instead of being with people makes me feel isolated, and sometimes depressed. So put down your phone and make some phone calls or lunch dates!

The term you are looking for is sessionable.

Sessionable? The word is derived from an English term for beers mild enough that one can theoretically consume multiple pints over the course of a several-hour session without becoming drunk.

This is a great idea. I think it's important to build up your emergency fund and to keep it separate from your "slush fund". I would suggest to people when setting up the slush fund, to know how much you need to spend each month (using Quicken or Quick Books is great!), and only go to the slush fund when your income is lower than that amount.

Many people my choose to splurge on something if they see the slush fund grow for a couple of months - the splurge can be planned too, but you still need discipline!

I love to hike in our nearby forestry trails. There is nothing better than a free, frugal walk in the likes of mother nature. The easy hike always helps recenter my mind and make me feel at peace.

Good post. As a "beer guy", I'm on board with this. I too am a fan of microbrews, stouts, porters, wheat ales, scotch ales, and all that delicious stuff. But I also agree that if we're talking about a long day of drinking, like tailgating, a bachelor party, or Labor Day, then you're better off with the domestics mentioned above. For the price, and also for your hangover. You'll get drunk fast on those heavy, high alcohol content beers, and be hurting the next day. Or you could drink less... just saying.

To me, different types of beers have their purpose. Quality can go down when the quantity goes up. I'm not going to pound young's chocolate stouts all night. I might splurge on a few just hanging out but, if it turns into an all-nighter, I'm switching to PBR. And of course, I wouldn't be driving, right kids?

I have my likes and dislikes in the beer world, but I'm no snob. Every beer has its purpose.

I go to my vegetable garden and work in the soil. Somehow weeding, so the plants can have more room, going to the compost bin and getting worms to add around....just makes you feel better!

I have a super busy job, so I try to deal with stress in various ways. One is an email management tip I picked up for those days when you get too much in your inbox: if I get a personal or work email that I can deal with in less than 3 minutes, I'll deal with it, instead of leaving it for later. Another is that I found a yoga studio a few blocks from my office. I always keep a yoga mat in my office and try to head to a class if I've had a hectic day. This gives me (i) some relaxation and (ii) a break from my work. Luckily, I can come and go as I please at work, so it's easy to take off whenever I want!

Like many others, I go to the gym. I put on a fast playlist and just go.
Thursdays I do a kickboxing class (with real bags to hit and kick). It's an amazing stress relief. I call it my weekly percussive therapy session.

I also spend time with friends, particularly friends who I know can and will make me laugh. Nothing like sitting around drinking milkshakes or soda (well, they're often drinking wine. But since I don't like the taste, I usually get a milk shake or soda) talking and laughing and not worrying about the rest of life and the world for a while.

When things get really stressful, I often take a night off. I gather up some friends (again, often the friends who can and will make me laugh, but ya know) for dinner and a fun movie of no consequence (no suspense movies or straight drama. Gotta be something fun and preferably funny). I forbid conversations about serious things that are going on in life for the duration of the evening (although usually fill everyone in on what's going on via an email before the event) and, for a few hours at least, we all pretend like everything is 100% amazingly good. It's a short break from reality, but it often helps with major stressful situations and lets me take a fresher, more calm look at the situation when I get back to real life.

  • Credit Cards vs. Debit Cards: A Comprehensive Comparison   15 years 42 weeks ago

Great summary. I just signed up for a rewards debit card that I'll use for purchases where I'm not as concerned about the credit card protections (like small, daily, in-person purchases). I'll likely use the credit card for electronics or online purchases from sources that are not top-of-the-line for trustworthiness.

And I'll balance the relative rewards (and cash back promotions) for a tie breaker. Seems a little complicated, but I enjoy the analysis. And I only have a few cards, so there isn't a ton of homework with this for me.

I agree that it's personal though. If you can't manage credit cards well then they may not be right for you at all.

When I am stressed I go for a walk around the neighborhood, and sometimes I bring my cell phone. Just talking through your stress releases some of the pressure. Not only that, but your friend might be able to help you come up with a plan of action to get rid of the stress altogether.

I find humor to be the best stress killer. If you look close enough you can see the humerus side of almost any situation. As the old saying goes: "Life is a tragedy to the man who feels, but a comedy to the man who thinks."
