If I needed a loan, I would rather go with the credit cards. It is hassle free and you get it in a day. I had used it once when I needed a fast one. I do reserve my allowable cash loan on my credit card. You never know when you needed it.

You can also read newspapers without fear of them shorting out when they hit water of any kind - I am not as comfortable reading online during breakfast! And the newspaper itself is very useful, too - I always find useful things in the paper - ways to save $ - and so on - & it always gives me something to TALK about!

  • How to Make Moonshine   15 years 35 weeks ago

Finally ran the sweet feed recipe. OMG! I will not attempt that again. The sweet feed was not the same as I grew up using to feed the horses. It was pellet formed and not very sweet smelling. The smell had a lot to be desired. Thinking this could be due to the unique nature of the mix, I let it run. Knowing some starches take longer to ferment, I gave it lots of time. The smell was that of a damp garbage can. When I tried to run the still, it did not smell as bad. Hoping against hope, I kept running it. The temps came up way to high and way faster then expected. The product that came out was almost pure water. Not sure what was created in the fermenter, but it was not alcohol. I think I will try for some corn next time. The new column and condenser I just made, worked way above my expectations. I do have an idea for a stacked bubble column. But it's way off.

  • Do You Own a Domain Name That’s Worth a Fortune?   15 years 35 weeks ago

Great article! First time I have seen a non-domain website accurately distinguish between cyber squatting and legitimate domain investing and speculation.

If you are sitting on a domain and not using it, you may wish to "Park" it with a company that displays ads and pays you everytime someone clicks (namedrive, domainsponsor, etc.). It probably won't generate alot of revenue unless you have an amazing domain, but its free money,

  • Do You Own a Domain Name That’s Worth a Fortune?   15 years 35 weeks ago

I have a friend who does this for a living. She just buys and sells domains and earns about $30,000/year. It's not much if it's your only job but definitely cool for some extra cash on the side if you get lucky or put in the time to research.

  • Sun Protection Through Your Food   15 years 35 weeks ago

    Great stuff--

I think the long term effects that the sun has on our skin is a very overlooked topic in this country.

If our diet can help, that would make it that much easier to deal with.

  • Must-Have Qualities to Ensure Long-Term Job Security   15 years 35 weeks ago

It's very important to not be half assed in front of your employer I guess.... No matter how sick of looking you are or how over qualified you may be for a position. If you go for every job like it's going for the head of the board then this quality will shine through and you will rise once you get in.

If you think reading a newspaper is faster than reading news online, you haven't discovered RSS.

  • 4 Ways Reading the Newspaper Will Make You Rich and Famous   15 years 35 weeks ago

Our major newspaper, the Atlanta Journal Constitution, and several local papers here in Atlanta, have not gone out of business but have suffered serious financial losses.
Their version of a daily paper now looks more like a newsletter than anything else.

I exaggerate a little. But its sad to see. I am as guilty as anyone. I get almost all my news online now.

But, newspapers in my opinion are another one of those "backbones" of America and should be supported.

They are also, by the way, a great way to teach a child to read. If you want your child to read, let them read about something they like. In a newspaper, they have a choice of about 100 things which they can read about.

  • Horizon Organic Milk: Is it All Just Lies?   15 years 35 weeks ago

Well, think those might be a bit exaggerated. Growing up on a small farm and having dairy cows, antibiotics used would disallow drinking the mill. And growth hormones became a fad even on young horses to make them appear more enhanced for showing and racing as with show cattle. So, personally I think that your intentions are viable, you should educate yourself a little more than your writing demonstrates!

  • 4 Ways Reading the Newspaper Will Make You Rich and Famous   15 years 35 weeks ago

I have been reading papers all my life. But, I'm afraid that doesn't change the fact that print, whether it is newspaper, magazines, or books, is steadily losing ground. It will not be coming back. The Internet and how we consume information has changed as much as it did when the printing press was first invented.

For look at what electronic information transmission has done to this process read "The Shallows: What The Internet is doing to our Brains." You may not like it, but there is no turning back.

I also agree with the comment about coupons. They are always for the highest priced national brands. Buy the Walmart brand of virtually everything and you'll save 30%.

  • 3 Proven Ways to Save Real Money at Garage Sales   15 years 35 weeks ago

There is one important reason why you find less and less at annual neighborhood yard sales. Households that have had more than a couple yard sales usually do not have a lot of great stuff remaining to sell. Last year they boxed up the stuff that didn't sell, and offered it again this year, and added in some new stuff. There is a street in the city where I yard sale that has had an annual sale for years now. I can hit 20 sales in under an hour, yet find nothing I want to buy. So now I hit that annual sale only if I have time after hitting the other individual sales in the city.

In general though, you will find that after you have gone to yard sales for a few years, there is less and less you need that typically turns up at yard sales. If you have young children or are just setting up a household, you will easily find enough
to make your time and gasoline worthwhile. I yard saled all summer with my with my daughter who bought a house this year. Toward the end of the season she found less and less she needed, because by then she had already bought the basics for her house.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Honestly Follow a Budget? (Chance to win $20)   15 years 35 weeks ago

No, I don't...I just check spending from previous month, make sure nothing's out of whack, and go from there. I am at a point where I do not need to have a set budget for each spending category, but I do have a set amount total for the month...so if I eat out too much, I can't spend as much on groceries or clothing, etc.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Honestly Follow a Budget? (Chance to win $20)   15 years 35 weeks ago

We've always been reasonably frugal but really not that crazy on following a exact budget until last year. As a family, what got us going was the realization that fulfilling big dream will require more than wishful thinking, we would need to do something more drastic; our goal is to take off for 6 months travelling with our kids in 5 years. Not something you can plan two week in advance, but in 5 years it's doable. So the first essential ingredient in our recipe is a exciting goal; which we have now. It has been inspirational and essential.

    We then built a budget for the year in excel format based on the previous year expenses and budget; where we got depressed a first but eventually realized the full extent of the challenge. Second ingredient; knowing how bad it is do do something about it. It got us to do two things;

First try to see if we can get any extra money by asking more from our respective employers and come up with a strategy to know how well we do every week. For the first point, we got positively surprised of what we got by asking for extra cash for this great project of ours. We than started shopping and trying different budget tools that would help us track our performance along the way; we tried many software for about a month until we found the one that suits our need; It has help tremendously since the real problem in a budget is the "soft" expenses, the 2$ to 10$ you think have no impact overall but really make the whole difference. We've been at it for almost a full year and we are really proud of what we achieved, we put about 10K$ aside on an overall 75K$ family revenues, something we would have never done without the budgeting. Some of our forecast where off but we got things reasonably right to put that mush aside . Next year we will have even more info to build our budget and we think we will not have the surprises that we had last year.

If we had a couple of advise to give, we'd say get your kids involved, they are smart and they can understand the long term goal when they know and they can help you achieve it. Let's be honest, these little guys can have spend more they you need because they don't understand what you are trying to do; you kids must know the value of a buck. Our kids are 6 and 8, and you'd be amaze how supportive they are of the exercise.

Also, track you revenue and expense every week in the tool you want; don't let it slip much more otherwise you'll forget where you spent your money. and by the way, using less cash and more cards, given they don't kill you with charges, will help you track.

Last things, as a couple you have to agree on the goal, the method and discuss the matter regularly; it keeps things smooth and rewarding. Don't try to do it alone it will not work!

    Go, you can do it!

  • Find Your Passion   15 years 35 weeks ago

    Hi Deborah

Just came across your comment to this article about finding your passion. And what you said about Manga. I'll be honest I don't know what it is - is it to do with drawing for comics?

Well have you decided on how your dream can help others? Write a list of 10 ways it will be of benefit to others. Given that you love it, it will benefit you loads. Have you created a vision which describes your ultimate dream for Manga? All it needs to be is an A4 page which captures your vision - Your Ideal Vision. And since you draw create a drawing and under the drawing write down the reason WHY this vision must come true.

Be creative! What new ways can you use your talents to meet a need? Maybe theres a whole new way which you can use Manga to entertain the world.

Then take the next step and keep moving with love and passion in your heart and your work. You'll be amazed at what doors will open for you.

    Carpe Diem!

  • Find Your Passion   15 years 35 weeks ago

Great article. Following our passion ensures we have the energy and interest to follow through when the going gets tough. And no matter whether we choose to follow our passion or not there will be challenges we face that are tough. If we are passionate about what we are doing we are more likely to succeed in overcoming that challenge! Just today I read a great quote in Mark Fisher and Marc Allens book "How to think like a millionaire", it read "When we do what we love, offering our gifts and our talents, without causing harm to anyone, we are working at the highest level of service for ourselves, those around us and our planet". So I agree it is very important to nourish and grow our passion in life! Carpe Diem!
