Thanks for the helpful article! I love it when a simple, natural product can be used so many different ways.

  • Should you skip a mortgage payment to get a bank's attention?   16 years 47 weeks ago

We have not paid our mortgage in 8 months due to a personal debt which a family member insisted we pay bakc earlier than expected. We contacted Countrywide four weeks ago and gave all of our monthly budget details and showed we could make the payments moving forward but would not be able to pay off what was outstanding in one lump sum. They said we would hear fromt hem within 30-90 days and that we should not make any payments unless they were full mortgage payments as they may get rejected. My credit eport shows I am 120 days late and while Countrywide said they issued a Foreclosure letter in Dec 2008, we did not receive it. The agent said that it is likely nothing ws done after that because of the new government laws and that because we could show we can make payments moving forward, that he was recommending that our outstanding payments be tacked onto the end of our mortgage.

We have an FHA mortgage and I am praying everyday that this works out and we keep our home. I did not experience the difficulties that others seem to have gone through with initial contacts with Countrywide and I am grateful for that. If I do not hear anything ny the end of June, I will attempt to contact them for a status update them

  • Let things go   16 years 47 weeks ago

It's true I've learnt about him. And today I've let him go.

Never live-in with someone you plan to marry. It's like renting an apartment. You don't tend to it, fuss over it and don't take ownership of it. You break something in the apartment - you tend to throw it away instead of tending to it or fixing it the very best you can.

I think if you dating someone and living with the person, there's a possibility of this happening. You don't like the person and you're not married - so why bother trying so hard to make it work so you can get married? Sigh...

I tried my best, I've committed myself from beginning. I tried everything. I moved country to be with him.

I don't think I've anymore tears to cry even. Now I need to get a place to move into the fastest I possibly can because my heart is left with nothing but a dull ache.

  • Are You Doing Bad Things with Your Money?   16 years 47 weeks ago

It is unreasonable, I'm not going to lie. But, when you're 17 and need to make money without a lot of experience you don't really have a lot of choices, you know? You end up putting up with a lot because otherwise, your job is threatened. Economically depressed areas for the win.

But...as a cashier who has had up to six cartloads dumped on her at once (this is actually a common occurrence) it pisses me off when people are just like "oh, hand it to the cashier!" or "put it in your cart and wheel it around to think about it but not buy it!" If you have no intent to buy you do. not. touch. Pricing errors are a different story. Of course, I usually just ended up overriding those so I'd stop getting screamed at by customers, so it wasn't THAT much of an issue.

I have a lot of horror stories about working grocery stores, but this isn't the time or place for that.

  • A Restaurant Where You Pay What You Can Afford For The Meal?   16 years 47 weeks ago

Yeah, ditto on this. Maybe I'm cynical too, but I know too many cheap and/or trashy people who would use this as an excuse to get free food and/or lowball it ridiculously.

There should be a minimum of at least a few dollars for sure. I'm sure the waitstaff/owners will come to realize just who is ACTUALLY in need vs. those who are just cheap.

We also have a restaurant like that here in Spokane, WA. I think they got the idea from the guys in CO :)

  • A Restaurant Where You Pay What You Can Afford For The Meal?   16 years 47 weeks ago

Personally I would have priced it at a minimum. Food costs plus a percentage of overhead to ensure the place stays in business. No one had a problem with someone making a few bucks but unfortuantely eventually this will get abused (especially with the economy where it is). I hope I am absolutely wrong but I am cynical enough already...

What a lovely story. I applaud this couple's generosity and clever idea. I hope it works out well for them.

  • A Restaurant Where You Pay What You Can Afford For The Meal?   16 years 47 weeks ago

We have similar community-run restaurants here in Melbourne (Australia) - the staff in them are usually disadvantaged youth learning to become chefs. It works really well actually - their statistics show that most people will usually pay above and beyond what the meal was actually worth - anywhere between $20 and $30. The theory is that people will pay more because it's going towards a good cause - helping the disadvantaged with their patronage.

  • New Ideas for Old Neckties   16 years 47 weeks ago

Hi Melanie. Covering it I think would make it too bulky. But what about removing the stitches and disassembling the old tie to use as a pattern? The fold lines would still be there, showing you how to stitch the new one. You could reuse the back liner piece, and not have to buy the new pattern. That would at least shave some money off the total cost.

  • New Ideas for Old Neckties   16 years 47 weeks ago

This may sound crazy, but would it be possible to take an old necktie and "reupholster" it with new fabric? I am looking for a quick way to make a sock monkey tie for a special occasion, and I don't want to pay $150 that Neimann-Marcus is asking! I also don't have the time to sew a brand-new tie from a pattern. Has anyone thought of this, or has anyone tried just covering an older tie with new fabric? Could this work? I'm just brainstorming right now, but may have to see if this is possible on my own!!! Thoughts would be appreciated!

I do love this idea too. I wish to have the opportunity to test this restaurant one day

  • A Restaurant Where You Pay What You Can Afford For The Meal?   16 years 47 weeks ago

I like this idea a lot.

Similar (but different), I am reminded of a restaurant in Montréal: Robin des Bois (Robin Hood) where the majority of the staff are volunteer, and all profit goes to supporting community charities.

Tis a swanky establishment, and the food is top notch. (I gather "head chef" is one of their paid positions.)

  • A Restaurant Where You Pay What You Can Afford For The Meal?   16 years 47 weeks ago

A lot of people don't believe that human beings are decent people who won't abuse the system just because someone lets them.

Establishments like this are proving this theory wrong day after day, and I wish them the best of luck! Hopefully, more people jump on the bandwagon and return to a more "human" approach to doing business.

    This is great.

  • Baby Carrots: The Frugal Idea That Isn't   16 years 47 weeks ago

there is a difference between true organic baby carrots & the baby- cut carrots you buy in the grocery store..

I have begun buying the Earthbound Farms brand of baby carrots and they do not get that crusty white chlorine coating.

  • Cheap and Simple Sunburn Remedies That Really Work   16 years 47 weeks ago

I've suffered from some really bad burns over the past years and found that soaking in a tub of warm/cool bath water with a bunch of tea bags helped so much. Depending on where the sunburn is you can soak in the tub or if just on face or shoulders you can make a big batch of hot tea and let it cool in fridge. Transfer the tea to a spray bottle and keep spraying! I beleive that the tea leaves help to soothe the burn and the pain that goes along with it!

  • Beautify Your Yard: What's Your Best Advice?   16 years 47 weeks ago

Let your lawn get a little longer between mowings and/or set your mower level higher and it will help your grass beat the heat. Longer lawns get less stressed than short because its own length helps shade the roots.

  • Failed Frugality: 5 Clues You’ve Gone Too Far   16 years 47 weeks ago

My girlfriend has some over frugal friends, every decision comes down to money. And when they do favors for friends they hunt down the people for the exact amount owed down to the penny. Their frugality sometimes kills the vibe. Like they always ask for rides without offering rides or never want to go places because they dont have any money. But the thing that pisses me off is that they splurge on themselves. Like one friend goes crazy on makeup and the other has Apple/mac everything.

  • Stop Being a Slave to Starbucks - How to Quit Caffeine   16 years 47 weeks ago

Caffeine is just like any other narcotic but it's side effects are light enough that it is able to pass under the nanny-state's radar. Still though... it's a narcotic. You gotta have it just to function throughout the day. I'd say it's the most addictive one out there... more addictive than nicotine, alcohol or opiates. Why? Because it's so easy. "Why stop drinking caffeine?!?" we say. You're almost considered "weird" if you don't partake. Addiction and denial at a grand scale. We're all so dependent on it that we have almost completely erased the idea that it's a drug out of our minds... so we don't have to or can't admit we are using one. But don't take me wrong... I don't consider it a moral issue unlike most of the self-righteous sheep out there. I don't find anything inherently wrong with using any drug... I just don't like having to depend on one and society is no help in this case. The same society that likes to throw you in jail for smoking pot. What a bunch of hypocrites. I guess it fits the agenda of our overlords to have us hyped up on caffeine so that we'll be good worker-bees but a joint might make us realize how they are screwing us day in day out because, 'gulp', we might think for ourselves and, this is the worst part, have -fun- doing it... can't have that.

  • 15 Wonderful Uses for Witch Hazel   16 years 47 weeks ago

For years I have used Witch Hazel as a DIY aftershave. I just put a few drops of essential oil (i like grapefruit) in it. I love it, it is cheap, doesn't smell to high heaven like other aftershave and I know exactly what I am putting on my face.

  • Failed Frugality: 5 Clues You’ve Gone Too Far   16 years 47 weeks ago

I can't say that I am 100% frugal, I like my Carmel Machiatto's at Starbucks. My partner is great at thinking before spending. We did try to make our own Carmel Machiatto and surprisingly it was tasty AND less than $4.
I also like to make my own cleaning products with selected essential oils that work with a purpose. Of course, I have overused some potent smelling essential oils (like Oregano Oil or Geranium) and have caused a commotion in our happy abode. This does NOT mean I will not pull out the BLEACH and disinfect the house every week. It's progress not perfection (my mother was also a nurse).
I liked the article. The dandelion wine incident reminded me of how we ALL boldly experiment from time to time.
Every year I get the urge to be one with nature and compost. What happens? I have a container of moldy coffee grinds sitting out in my backyard and an empty plastic container purchased at my local Kmart. And yes I too say, "What the heck was I thinking?"

  • Who Cares if there's a Recession? I just started a business   16 years 47 weeks ago

I really enjoyed this. Not only do I think starting a business is smart in this economy, you really set it up around your lifestyle. That is so important-any financial burdens are lessened when we focus on enjoying our lives, and maximize that goal instead of just "stuff".

  • 15 Wonderful Uses for Witch Hazel   16 years 47 weeks ago

My sister has always used witch hazel and touted it's benefits for clear skin. After seeing this post, I think it's high time I get some and start using it regularly. I could use some under my baggy eyes today!
