  • 8 Cheap Ways to Save Money on Gas   14 years 5 weeks ago

    Go electric :).

I've driven my Chevrolet Volt for 2300 miles using only 0.9 gallons of gas, and paid only $20 for electricity by using free public/work charging. I got a 3 year lease for $340 month fully loaded and saving over $240/month of gas. That means I'm paying roughly only $100/month for a $46,000 car and insurance cost as much as my old Civic.

    GAS FREE AND LOVING IT!

  • Are Extended Warranties Ever a Good Deal?   14 years 5 weeks ago

I don't get why everyone uses the "the company makes good profit from the warranty" statement as an argument against buying warranties. You realize everything you buy is being sold to you with pretty significant profit for the business right? That's pretty much how a business works. Buying medicine makes the drug companies money but still does good for you and just because a store makes money selling a warranty doesn't mean you shouldn't buy it. You should judge your purchase on how you long you want your product to last and how you intend to use it and if the warranty is reasonable and covers accidental damage.

  • How to Travel Full-Time for $17,000 a Year (or Less!)   14 years 5 weeks ago

I'm envious - and pleasantly surprised - that you were able to travel for an entire year for just $17k. It gives me hope of being able to do the same (although, I know I'd need to bring a little bit more luggage). Thanks so much for the tips.

  • Secret Lawn Tonic Recipe From Golf Course Groundskeeper   14 years 5 weeks ago

    Greets,

I tried this out for the first time this year and it's working great for me.

    The ingredients I used were...

Budweiser Beer 12 oz out of a bottle
    Coke 12 oz can
Palmolive original dish soap 1/2 cup
    Scope original mint 1/2 cup
    Clear Ammonia 1/2 cup

I used an Ortho 32 oz sprayer (the mixture just fits) and set it at 2.5 oz per gallon. I slowly walked the yard 1/2 acre. I had to make 5 batches. As far as what the ingredients do specifically I'm not sure but it works for me.

The yard does smell minty fresh which is kind of nice but it fades by the next day. I can honestly say that this worked for me as my grass is super green. I even had some grass coming up that I had seeded in the fall. The new grass was not as green as my established grass but after spraying this mixture it greened right up. My grass is super green and my surrounding neighbors lawns are no where near as green. It almost looks like I painted it a dark green.

I would let it dry before your pets walk on it.

Anyway it works for me so hopefully it will work for you. I plan on spraying the lawn every 4 to 6 weeks.

  • How to Make a Piggy Bank   14 years 5 weeks ago

I have been making it a habit of saving my loose change for a few years now. I have four containers in a kitchen cabinet, a recycled metal flower pot holds quarters, two plastic cups hold nickels and dimes and a glass jelly jar holds pennies. I keep my coins separate for a few reasons - it's easier to roll when they are sorted, I don't count and roll until a couple containers are full, have a box for the rolls and only cash in when the box is heavy. I love the sound the coins make when getting dropped into their container - it makes saving more fun for me! I save my change from Oct to Oct and average about $500.00. I then use the money for Christmas, whether it be traveling or presents (helps with the budget squeeze during the holidays, too).

Does anyone have suggestions about what to use to cover the must? Anything more specific than "loosely covered"? This sounds like potentially the only dangerous part.

    RE: 7

Premium gas without ethanol gets better mileage than regular with 10% ethanol. The difference more than makes up for the higher cost.

May? $3.96, it was $3.88 here in NC and March isn't even over, guess the #8 is my option, just don't drive, I live 5 miles from town and I'm 72 years old with a messed up arm and bad back, Guess I can cut out Dr. Visits, save Medicare money, my medigap policy that costs a couple hundred will be happy also..They've already said, most on SS can't afford to live in NC even with the COLA raise...Good job Obama...

#9: Declutter the car. No junk in the trunk. If you have a van or SUV, take out the back seats unless you need them for passengers. Take the cross-bars off the roof rack unless you are using them. That helps reduce wind resistance. All weight you can remove from your vehicle will improve mileage.

  • Is Pet Health Insurance Worth It?   14 years 5 weeks ago

I have a mixed breed (cocker spaniel and some other things I'm not sure of) male dog and he's going to be 12 this year and still acts like a puppy and has had no issues other than tarter build up on his teeth/bad breath. I've been very lucky. But now that he's getting older, I'm starting to think about the possibilities of health issues coming up in the next 5 years. Hopefully none but it's smart to prepare. I think I'm going to start putting money away in a savings account AND get him a policy. To me, $30-$50 a month for a policy on my older dog is worth it, no matter what they pay out if something happens. It's better than going out of pocket in full. It's just an expense that I'm going to have to accept and pay along with whatever vet bills he may or may not incur in his final years. I'm hoping he just goes peacefully and of "old age". I have a feeling that's what it'll be. He's a healthy and happy little guy and everyone is shocked when I tell them he's 12!

Does anyone know anything about these insurance companies insuring older dogs?

  • 25 Frugal Changes You Can Make Today   14 years 5 weeks ago

I rent and pay a round "all-inclusive" rate, so in my case water/electric/repair savings don't apply. I also don't have kids and don't have a car; I use public transit.

I realize that not owning a home, a car or having children are all pretty helpful when it comes to saving money.

I got rid of magazines subscriptions recently because I was only skimming them and then they just cluttered my place. If I really want to check out a certain issue I go to the library. I have a basic cell phone plan, avoid expensive outings ($15 movie ticket - no thanks), and barely ever drink.

The expenses I have the most trouble with are groceries, coffee or tea and lunch at work (I hate packing a lunch), home furnishings (Home Sense makes a lot of money from me) and gifts.

Love seeing this kind of story and this is why I read blogs to get the more personal side of things. Do you think you'll be making the trip frequently or only when you've saved up on miles--which is understandable given the cost of traveling?

In Canada especially, Netflix doesn't have all that much content. There are a few good tv series on it, but only the first 2 or 3 seasons, and there aren't many movies that I want to see. After a few months I had pretty much watched everything on there that was interesting to me. Also Netflix DOES require that you have a PS3, XBox 360 or Wii if you want to watch on your tv, which is an extra $100-$200. Watch on a computer isn't bad if you are alone, but if you are watching with more than one person, it doesn't work.

I do appreciate that CTV, Citytv and Global have their shows online though, but then again, watching on the computer is not that great.

Thanks for the comment, Tyler! It's really amazing how different I feel when I get up, take a shower, and put on proper clothes for the day when I'm working from home. There have been days that I've just stayed in my pajamas because I don't plan to go out, but those days are never as productive as when I'm fresh and ready to go.

I've actually been using tip #4 a lot lately and it works. Having the fresh air and a lit room helps me wake up and get going in the morning.

My mom tried, but in the end I learned the most about personal finance management the hard way - getting deep in debt and then having to dig myself out. Now I've got mad budget skills that my husband hopes I'll pass on to our kids. :)

Not so much a who, but what - the internet and websites like this one. My parents taught me a little about savings and giving back to charity growing up, but didn't go much beyond either you could afford something or you couldn't.

  • 15 Alternative Uses for Nail Polish   14 years 5 weeks ago

Growing up in a house full of girls, I definitely used a few of theses, like the panty hose and the colorful keys. But I never would have imagined there are so many useful ways to use nail polish. I also hate sewing (makes me feel like a grandma) but I'm constantly getting hole in my fabric and have no choice but to grab a needle and thread to fix it. The frustration I get from try to thread a needle though is irritating! I can't wait to use nail polish to help me out!

Interesting idea to iron your clothes when working from home.. Every little bit helps to get you in the working mindset I guess! I use a lot of these techniques, coffee is a big boost, but no early AM meetings if I can help it!

  • 25 Ways to Get Motivated Today   14 years 5 weeks ago

As a college student, i'm hitting my mid-semester crisis and lack in the motivation department. This post was just what I needed. I'm a coffee addict so it made me smile when the first thing on the list was to drink coffee...that I can do! But the other 24 ways are going to be so helpful to fuel my motivation and get me through the rest of the semester. Thank you so much for the tips.
