great for you having an hour glass figure, but i'd say a larger percentage of plus size gals like myself don't have a waist. in fact alot of us look like we're 7 mo pregnant! a very different figure to fit.

interesting bit to find a decade in which designers liked to design for my shape. i live in pants/jeans and find it works for me, not so much for shape but for how my life is. dressess dont' work as well for me when you're dealing with children, running errands, painting, gardening etc

Sad to say, the negative article about plus-size shopping had thousands of visitors and so many comments they had to shut it down.

If you look at the story, tips were buried in the negativity. However, it's incredibly irritating that "expert" recommendations on how to deal with a particular problem (i.e. large hips, top heavy, etc.) never consider a woman might have numerous problem areas that can't be fixed by wearing a cute jacket that nips in at the waist.

BTW: Why is the mannequin modeling the dress in your illustration so skinny? Shouldn't she be plus-sized?

Shred them right after you take them out of the envelope! I'm always so annoyed that these things keep coming in the mail--because they absolutely could be used by someone other than you! And you really have no financial incentive to use them. They're a bad bet.

Great post. Makes me wish we could book a day of shopping and cocktails. What fits isn't even a matter of being a size xxx. It's shape. Junk in the trunk = no leggings jeans for me.

Even time I vintage I realize how de-flated sizes have become vs. the old days. I'm a 8 in jackets now - a 10 or 12 in jackets from the eighties.

Thanks so much for the great information!

I'd love to see something like this for plus-sized men too. Often we're relegated to just single-color t-shirts and elastic pants. Some of us like fashion too!

I'm a Canadian, and am very pleased with the coverage I have. However, we do have a two-tier system, even if it won't be called that. Physiotherapy costs for each visit until I'm a senior, the podiatrist visit cost me, seeing the optometrist costs. I know that I am very very fortunate that if I had an acute issue, I could see people and the province health plan would cover it - but I'm in the process of trying to regain the health of my knees, feet, and hips through physiotherapy and orthotics, so I can be more active and perhaps get rid of my metabolic syndrome. It costs money to not muddle along with significant pain which leads to reduced exercise which leads to reduced health which leads to a greater chance of needing emergency assistance for things like heart disease or stroke...

I am imagining city-owned insurances, to help further offset the costs for the 'extras' that lead to improved health. If enough people pay in, then the fees could be fairly low and yet those who need the most assistance can get it and reduce things like ambulance calls and save the city some money.

It is even harder to find clothes if you are tall. With the internet now it is easier, but still highly expensive. You can tailor most clothes to be shorter, but not longer.

  • Why I (Heart) My High Deductible Health Insurance Plan   16 years 4 weeks ago

Though most people today have, some type of medical insurance coverage through their employer the risk of losing the employer insurance plan is greater than if you had a health insurance plan independent of whatever company your are employed. One of the more attractive benefits is that whether you stay employed at your current place of employment or transfer to another for higher pay and stability your health insurance plan remains with you.

Of course, this is a very costly adventure in most cases, but there are some who are able to absorb the cost long-term. The key to success is for you to do your homework and shop around. It takes time to gather information about health insurance through booklets, pamphlets and at times a walk in appointment, but in the end, it may be your most attractive alternative.

Depending on your health, that of your family members and your financial status you might consider researching the Health Savings Account (HSA) because this will afford you a little more freedom and choice over the other more traditional health plans. The Health Savings Account is far from an affordable health insurance plan when you are first setting it up though as it requires an initial deposit of about five thousand dollars to be placed in the account up front.

Do you really think that "Fat People" don't pay more. I know for a fact that they do. Insurance companies charge more for over a certain age, because they are prone to more health issues, charge more for smokers, charge more for women who are childbearing age (yet won't pay for birth control), will not cover you at all if you have hobbies that are considered dangerous - skydiving, etc, and they do in fact charge more if you are overweight, in the case of an independant catastrophic plan I had between jobs, the premium is double if you are 100 pounds or more overweight - and if you lose that weight, you have to keep it off 5 years before they will lower that premium even if you lose it in 6 months. I got that directly from our local Blue Cross carrier.

  • The "marriage penalty" of taxes in America - how does it affect you?   16 years 4 weeks ago

If there is no name change, address change or w4 change, how would IRS be aware of a marriage status change? Not marking the correct status box is tax fraud, but how do they detect it? Neglecting to report a marriage to the SS, doesn't change benefits, but could be a mess if survivor benefits become an issue. Just curious.

It's interesting that dresses work so well for you and pants don't. My experience is so different.

I can never find dresses that are proportioned properly. I'm a 34-36 G, broad shoulders, hour glass figure. Dresses always make me look short waisted, and they're usually huge in the waist and the hips by the time they come close to fitting on top.

Pants are my go-to - boot cut or flared only (Coldwater Creek and Eddie Bauer - both have great clearance deals and lots of different fits - I rarely pay more than $10 a pair). My biggest problem is finding talls so they're long enough in the rise (crotch to waist)

Ditto on the no belts, heavy sweaters. I go for great looking tailored shirts since I have a waist (Coldwater Creek, Van Heusen and surprisingly Dress Barn) that don't over emphasize all the cleavage.

We really need to quit fooling ourselves. The reason people are eating more junk food is not because it is cheaper. It's not. They're eating those foods because they taste better and they're more convenient ( no cooking required )!

Are soda and beer cheaper than water?

The ultimate cheap foods like beans and rice are cheap.

A local supermarket has chicken thighs without the back attached for $0.88/lb. On special they are even cheaper.

Frozen broccoli at Walmart can be had for a $1/lb.

Please tell me what these cheap junk foods are!

Just about any junk food that has high calories for the cost would be cheaper if made at home. Potato chips: how much would it cost to buy potatoes and fry them in a bunch of oil?

People can make greasy, sugary foods at home very cheaply.

Maybe if the people eating all that junk cared more they would eat better...

We grow a huge garden and have fruit trees, raspberries, blueberries and strawberries. We also make maple syrup and have our own beef and barter with others for pork. We grow / raise about 65% of the food we eat and I would like to increase that number to at least 90%. We are doing that by getting chickens and more fruit plants this summer. I process (can, freeze, dehydrate, etc) our surplus for the winter months. This is something we have done for many years (before it was the "in" thing to do) and DH's family has done this for generations. This is nothing new. If society wasn't so busy making the all important dollar and snubbing stay at home parents (wow, they actually are smart) they would realize that doing "manual" work themselves is better then paying someone else to do it. The current economic situation is make people realize what is important - having more time to spend and take care of their family.

  • Convenience Checks: 6 Reasons Why They Can Cause Trouble   16 years 4 weeks ago

Many credit card companies treat convenience checks differently than balance transfer checks.

For instance, the convenience checks are often subject to your credit balance available for "Cash Advances". Balance transfers are usually subject to your total credit limit.

As mentioned in the post convenience checks usually have a higher "cash advance" interest rate, while balance transfers usually revert to the standard rate on the card if the promotional rate expires.

Check with your credit card company to check the details of your offer to make sure you are getting what you think you're getting.

The biggest expense in slow food meals is usually meat. Having cut way down on my own meat consumption, I have replaced it with far less costly, healthy proteins:

We've been slow food addicts for some time in both the US and France. I agree that it's worth paying more for better food--and fast food has hidden costs to people and the societies in which they live!

But some slow foods are actually a great deal and hassle free--like CSA's. We used to pay $25 a week for a box of veggies from a local farm--it took us just a few minutes to pick it up on our way home from work. No, we didn't get to select the vegetables and fruits, but after a little practice, I got to be very good at figuring out what to do with what we got each week. It was a cheap and easy source of organic and in-season foods. I highly recommend CSA's if you have them in your area.

Why do I have to wait till I'm 65 before I have access to guaranteed health care? The waiting could kill me.

  • Ask the Readers: What Do You Want in a Health Insurance Plan?   16 years 4 weeks ago

Agreed 100%. I know it is difficult to give accurate pricing. But they can say okay first we will take xray it will cost this much and next doctor will see xray and consult you and it will cost you this much. If there is fracture then it will be like else it would be like this. But the problem is stupid staff always say WE DONT KNOW HOW MUCH IT COST.....

To the extent that one is compromised, it will affect the others.

As this relates to this article, I think that spending more on good quality, natural food can certainly be worth it. Sure, it will help you health. That health impact might make a difference in allowing you to better enjoy relationships. And what impact will that have on your finances....it can only help, all things being equal. Not to mention the lower health care costs!

It all comes down to making the right decisions each day, with seemingly small consequences. These do add up, and there is a bill to pay eventually! Living a fast food diet is like living in debt.

  • Ask the Readers: Have You Ever Re-Gifted?   16 years 4 weeks ago

    Hey,

Just chanced on this post searching for giveaways.

It's amazing how at one time this gifting strategy seamed so taboo, and now it is one of my top ten favorite tips on budgeting. What could be worse than adding to the stress of planning the holdidays than adding the financial stress of funding gift purchases you know they may not even appreciate.

I feel very comfortable regifting, but only if the item is in great shape and I know the recipient will really appreciate it.

    Happy Gifting,

Primarily, I want my health care plan to involve my health care providers and my family -- not a profit-driven, middleman insurance company.
