A certain amount of confusion is apparent in your thinking, and a certain amount of presumption has lead you to an assumption. Alas, all wrong. Still 5/10 for trying, and work on your spelling.

FrayChek or washable fabric glue. It has saved dozens of pieces of clothing by stopping the fabric from unravelling when the hole or snag is too small or difficult to repair.

I like the $4 Tide mesh bags because nothing snags. Washing socks in them means no more matching.

I used to dread buying all the fixings, the time and effort it took cleaning and chopping, and, if you didn't eat it quickly enough, the wasted produce and money.

Now, I simply buy a bag of whatever type salad I'm in the mood for, and..voila, instant gratification!

  • Can a Little Inflation Be Good?   16 years 10 weeks ago

I tend to think a little inflation is good if only for the fact it is a buffer against deflation. Deflation would be devastating for the US economy (see Great Depression) and the Feds have very little control since deflation is such an emotion driven scenario. Personally, I think deflation is on the horizon (unfortunately). The downward pressure on prices and nagging unemployment (plus a artificially weak yen) will keep prices going down. I DO think it is needed to counteract the "real" and unsubstantiated inflation that happened over the last 30 years (asset price appreciation + real estate).

Also, inflation isn't simply money supply. Inflation is money supply + money velocity. This is why the government was willing to dump "liquidity" into the market during the credit crunch. Since the markets had essentially frozen, the government was trying to load the system with capital with the plan of tightening supply once the markets opened up. Right now the markets aren't opening up (which isn't helping prevent deflation). The large lubricators of the market, i.e. Goldman Sachs would rather take money from the fed @ 0.5% and loan it to the treasury @ 3.5%. This way, they can take there GUARANTEED 3% spread (backed by the full faith of the US taxpayer) and distribute it amongst their executives.

  • Dealing with Nasty Debt Collectors   16 years 10 weeks ago

my 20 year old daughter is being hounded by a collector. now that's part of the problem. i called representing my self as her because she is so sick from all of this. the guy was joe and said he was with the fraud dept. i told him i didn't think this was my card. but have since found out that it is a card i used 2 times in my freshman year 2007 to buy books. with all the confusion and paper work of being new at college. it got pushed aside and forgotten. so when the bills started coming i was dealing with roommates from hell. working. and had a full schedule plus some. we thought it was a fraud and called the company asking for paperwork on what was purchased. and they refused to sent anything to me. i ask if i could have my mom handle this and they said no. they are calling up to 15 times in one hour. now my mom/me contacted them and asked the calls to stop. that i'm in class and this all was making me sick. i told them i would go thru mounds of paper work to see what i could find. at least this time when my mom asked they told her it was from the book store. which jogged my memory. now i want to call them and set up payments and take care of this. i guess my question is if he is with the bank after 3 years of letters can he/they keep calling me and harassing me if i have agreed to make payments? i can't take this anymore. i've been to my doctor several times because of the stress from all of this and all most dropped out of college. any ideas/help would be most grateful. thank you cassie and mom. gaygaysa@yahoo.com

I bought a mini-laptop pc from a friend and even though he canceled his paid subscription, I can get Internet pretty much anywhere. I have a larger notebook at home that I do not want to take out of the house so this one can fit in most purses! We took it on a trip and so much easier to manage. Packed it in carry on. Do not do secure buying or bank account checking just general use.
Also, love Uncle Sam cereal. It is low glycemic, no sugar and has flax seeds. 10 grams of fiber per serving. Everyone who tries it likes it too.
Also, love the French Press, mine broke but will replace soon.

Thank You.

If we weren't in some solid debt and I had the cash for it, I would be at the dealer right now. Great cars! As long as I am buying one not a part of the recall of a fixed car- then yes. It is really sad to see the deaths and the accidents. Horrible.

  • How to Answer 23 of the Most Common Interview Questions   16 years 10 weeks ago

Omar- I agree with the article about the weaknesses question. You need to be able to list a few small ones that are easily fixed. I always say I get lost in the details so now I am more focused on the bigger picture. I can tell you another thing I have learned from this question is whether or not they like you. If they ask you to list one, they are just asking to ask and see what you will say. I know my husbands friend was actually asked to list seven of them, so the number is a good gage.

I think everyone who's saying "I've owned/driven a Toyota for X years and I've never had a problem." is somehow missing the point.

Are you thinking that anyone here would casually post, "Oh yes, my accelerator stuck once or twice, and my car sped up because of it - but I didn't think much about it."

Of course you haven't had the problem. It's not very likely that you would - but if you do, your car will INSTANTLY SPEED UP while you're driving. You'll probably crash, and you have a good chance of being injured or dying.

Those who own Toyotas may be predisposed to wanting to believe the problems aren't a big deal - because they haven't experienced them - but that's not the point. This is a real problem and it's killed people, and it's going to kill more. Stop being so insistent on proving to yourself that you're safe, because if you own a Toyota - you're not.

MAN!!!! I wish our household wasn't so affected by the economy right now, cause I'd totally go trade in my 2004 Toyota Sienna (minivan) and get a nice new shiny red one!!!!

I LOVE my minivan. And we only owe 2 more payments on it, which is totally going to ensure that our family WILL keep being able to have dinner on the table at this point in time.....so having a new car payment is impossible....

But I'd LOVE to take advantage of those prices!!

    Darnit! Darnit! Darnit!!

Oh, by the way, we've NEVER had a problem with our Sienna yet.
It's been the best car we've ever had, actually!

If we HAD had a car with problems though, I can see how people wouldn't want to buy another one of course.
But at this point, I'm sure there's no new Toyotas on the lot, with the recent recall problems.
And ALL cars have recalls. This is nothing new.

Here are my 3 "must-have" items.

    1. Magic eraser. I don't use it for every task, but it has been a lifesaver when I'm moving and cleaning the old apartment or when I need to clean the windowsills in my house. It's also magic (ha ha) for getting rid of crud in the bathtub and on the stove burners.

    2. Metal tea filters. I use loose-leaf tea all the time, and having reusable tea filters is a lifesaver. There's much less waste than using tea bags, and I can easily re-use high-quality leaves. My favorite is one that looks like a basket and has a lip so the top sits on top of your mug but the tea leaves are fully submerged.

    3. Bon Ami cleaner. It's super cheap, cleans almost everything (an unstoppable combo with Magic Eraser), is gentle, and is great for removing stains on on my white Caesarstone countertops (I didn't buy them... I live in a rental).

  • 20 Signs That You Were Raised By TRUE Money-Savers   16 years 10 weeks ago

My mother-in-law recently told me what a bunch of sissies her kids had become crying about this 'horrible' recession and how hard things are now. She continued her reality check with us by reminding my husband and I that in the early 1980s, her husband lost his job as a West Virginia coal miner, forcing the family to uproot from their home (purchased with a 20 year mortgage and paid off in 10) and move to Virginia to find jobs in the textile mills. When those closed too, they were left to feed a family of 5 on a single income of about $7 an hour. Guess how...

She learned to garden, can, preserve, bake, sew, raise chickens and rabbits, and get creative about dinner which was frequently a modestly sized pot of beans simmered all day with some fatback and a couple chunks of cornbread. Hamburger Helper was too expensive, and turning lettuce was a delicacy when it was "kilt" with bacon fat and milk in a skillet.

Culturally speaking, as kitschy or charming as these stories may sound to us now, these things are at the heart of keeping it simple. And if we could all remember how to do that maybe these hard times would be taken with a little less weight and little more ingenuity. Great article!

Didn't realize my previous comment wouldn't nest under the author, so here are my beloved items...

Conair blow-dryer that also straightens... $40 is more than I'd usually pay for a blow-dryer, but this thing makes my hair much more soft and manageable and dries my hair much faster. Totally worth it!

Vacuum attachments. Crumbs on my counter? Vacuumed! Dusty up-lamp? Vacuumed!
As a pair with this, earplugs! I have a great vacuum but it is LOUD. I can't believe I never thought to wear earplugs while vacuuming until recently.

Clorox spray mop thingie. I am way too lazy to mop otherwise, especially because it's hard to even tell you've done so with my apartment's sad old linoleum. I got this free off of freecycle, and several refills of the pads and the liquid from another freecycler. Once I run out of the pads I will use rags instead.

I love my reusable shopping bags and I use the HECK out of them. I am one of the rare people, apparently, who has been able to get into the habit of bringing them from the car. Also, if I am buying a small amount of stuff, I will just hand-carry it to the car if I didn't bring a bag, and put it in the bag when I get outside.

Cheap mesh laundry bags. You can buy "nice" ones made by woolite for like $8 but the zipper on mine broke after not too long. I got a couple of them while living in Japan at the dollar store equivalent, and got more at my local http://www.daisojapan.com/ for $1.50 each to supplement my supply. I use them for all sorts of things to keep my clothes in better condition, then air dry them.

  • Make Cents of Healthcare with a PHR   16 years 10 weeks ago

There are multiple formats for an electronic PHR. There are applications for stand alone use on a computer as well as online applications. A lot of insurance carriers are offering online PHRs as well as physicians. I would check with your insurance and PCP to see if they offer one. If they do not here is a website that can help choose one: http://myphr.com/index.php/start_a_phr/choose_a_phr/

I am sorry to hear about unfortunate medical events. I understand how a PHR can be extremely helpful in your situation. If you need any help at all please let me know and I will do my best to assist.

Be careful about keeping a pain sharpie in your purse! (That's what the silver ones are). I would keep it in a ziploc bag if I were you. Also, did you know you're supposed to try to store them upside-down to keep them working the best?

  • E-Book Review: Discover Your New Job Online   16 years 10 weeks ago

I've worked with clients in the Speech Pathology and Transportation/Logistics fields who have had portfolios, though they were paper presentations (in nice binders, found at Staples) rather than digital ones. These made a huge difference in their interviews and job offers.

And many of the resources that Thursday mentions are niche-related and not specific to a creative industry. LinkedIn and niche job sites are a couple of examples.

However, I agree that much of the advice I see now seems to be "you must do...." tells you that you should create a blog, get on Twitter, etc. which is not useful if those in your industry aren't there. These resources in the e-oobk are online resources rather than online jobs (though there is an intersection there). Wise Bread has loads of resources in the Career and Income section.
