That's a great question, Cathie! Marshmallow is indeed an herb, a.k.a Althaea officinalis. It's what the fluffy marshmallow candy was originally made with.

I have to say that I disagree with back to school in August, but not entirely. The back to school supply sales are great right before school starts, but I usually start my BTS clothes shopping at spring/summer clearance (May/June, depending on where you live). If you have younger children, their pant size and shoe size may be hard to gauge, but for shirts, hoodies, socks, underwear, etc., you can come away with alot better deals. Winter clearance is a great time for hats, gloves, scarves, etc. also.

I didn't know marshmallow was a plant. Is that for real, or was this auto-corrected?

A bit confused, I was raised in Central Utah (Provo area) and we lived under the constant threat of Earthquakes due to the Wasatch Fault Line. I also have personal memories of an earthquake when I was a teenager. We also experienced a whole town being flooded that no longer exists due to a mountain moving and blocking a river (it also closed interstate 70 for quite some time). We also lived with the threats of flash floods from the winter run off coming down the canyons. The crime rate piece was nice to see.

If you have Windows 8, there's a new application that was just released that will handle all of this for you. My friend pointed me to it yesterday, and I really like it.

Its called Debt Tracker. See it here in the WIndows 8 Store: http://apps.microsoft.com/windows/en-US/app/debt-tracker/6605d6a4-d6fe-4...

Thanks for sharing your experience. I don't know if everyone can anticipate all the services they might need or the types of investing they might want to do over an investing lifetime so sometimes you may need to switch (or open more than one account). Also, glad you were able to get the closing/transfer fee reimbursed -- many brokers will cover those costs for you.

I actually had to just switch brokerage accounts because Scottrade did not have what I wanted--DRIP. I switched to Fidelity which was difficult because I really liked Scottrade. Fidelity, though, has been very good to me! I like their online chat option with a representative. They helped me with the process of transferring my accounts and they even reimbursed the $75 fee I was charged by Scottrade for transferring.

  • Making a Relationship Work When One Partner Earns More   13 years 35 weeks ago

I make more than what my husband makes, and we've never had any issues.

We figured out the percentages right at the beginning, and I pay the big stuff (mortgage, major credit card, insurance, etc) while husband pays the small stuff (utilities, small credit card, etc). We have two (joint) checking accounts as that has always worked best for us - but they are SHARED accounts; his has his paycheck direct deposited and my account gets my paycheck (so no freaking out if someone forgets to note a transaction or withdraws money without telling the other person). We add to our shared savings account monthly with whatever we feel comfortable with once the bills are paid.

We don't split bills - just add up what the basic amounts were of monthly expenses back at the beginning, and parceled out the individual bills according to what made sense and was manageable. We occasionally do a quick update (like when we refinanced and the mortgage payment dropped about 30%) to make sure that both of us are comfortable with what we're paying and still have enough left over for personal spending and our savings.

It's really about who has the responsibility for making sure which bills are paid, and we share the bill paying so that both of us have responsibility for managing and solving bill issues (husband was not taught anything about money management growing up, but he's great now)

Neither of us consider our pay scales relevant to our self-worth or impact our relationship at all. I can't even imagine expecting my husband to go get a second job to earn "even" with me, and the idea that he has to do more work around the house just because he makes less money? That is sad. He works just as hard as I do, and it was just luck I have such a great well-paying job...

One of my financial goals for 2013 is to save between $2,000 and $3,000 for my emergency fund. I also want to tithe consecutively for 12 months.

Thanks for even thinking about minor accounts -- it wouldn't have occurred to me to pose that particular question. And, as you mention, broker services are constantly changing (plus some services, pricing, etc. are negotiable) so it is wise to speak directly to a representative before opening an account.

  • Mend a Broken Heart Without Breaking the Bank   13 years 35 weeks ago

There are some great tips here that can help improve both your and other's lives, but I feel like #1 and #9 are a bit misguided. As for the first, deleting someone from all social media may not cost anything financially, but the act of removing them can take an emotional toll on the recipient. If you really can't stand the sight of their statuses you can hide them on facebook, an equally effective yet less severe alternative. As for pets, I love the idea, but don't think it really works with the frugal theme. Whether it's a fish (tank, filter, tank cleaner, food) or a dog (vet visits, leash, food) the long-term costs of pets can be pretty substantial. Outside of that, I loved the tips!

This year I'm going to do a better job at investing my money. I want to start practicing income investment strategies such as covered calls to earn a better return on my investments. This combined with a tight budget should get me on the right path to a brighter financial picture.

I have several financial resolutions but the most important is to sell my current house so we can move into a condo in a neighborhood that is more central to our life.

  • 16 Ways to Make Your Clothes Last Longer Without Spending Big   13 years 35 weeks ago

long ago, I stopped using antipersperant. I wear a lot of white and it was staining everything terribly. I still wear a lot of white and I still get stained pits, but not nearly as bad. The only solution I've found for this is HOT water after a long day and BRIGHT sunlight after a hot washing.

  • Making a Relationship Work When One Partner Earns More   13 years 35 weeks ago

At 40, I'm embarking on my second marriage. For the first time, I'm in a relationship with someone who makes more money than I do. It's no problem for him, but I am having a hard time with it. Out of personal guilt, I do all of the household chores to try to equalize our contributions but it's hard because, like another commenter has replied, there are only 24 hours in the day. I have a full-time job and, as we all know, housework takes a lot of work and time. I simply don't agree that numbers 5 and 6 are practical. Based on my experience, numbers 5 and 6 are only done out of guilt, not practicality.

My money goal is to buy a house with my husband. Or maybe build. Okay, maybe our goal is to make a smart financial decision about the house and make it happen.
