  • Here's How Investing in Companies You Hate Can Make You Rich   11 years 36 weeks ago

Agree with all these except McDonalds. Typically the companies we hate as consumers are very complex, high CapEx companies. Infrastructure is king! AT&T is my largest non-fund holding even though I don't necessarily like being a customer of theirs. Why? You know they're not going to disappear over night AND they pay a huge dividend.

  • The 5 Worst Things to Grow in Your Garden   11 years 36 weeks ago

This is an interesting article but I am not sure whether to take it absolutely seriously or if it is intended to stir interest with a bit of a gardening contrarian perspective.

All of the points are well taken, certainly. But as a gardener who has successfully raised all of these crops I can equally see good reasons for growing all of them (although getting them from a farmer's market might suffice in some cases).

True, hard clay soil can result in small deformed carrots, but the answer is to amend the soil or use raised beds (my preferred answer) and the taste of fresh from the garden carrots is incredibly better than store bought ones.

True, cabbage worms can destroy crops like cauliflower and the plant likes cool weather, but the answer is to use bt (bacillus thuringiensis) which is an organic method to protect the plant and to put out the plants about a month or so before the last Spring frost so they can grow in cool weather.

These crops can be challenging if you are not knowledgeable about growing vegetables, but they all are a great delight to eat fresh grown.

  • Reverse Bucket List: Look Back Before Looking Forward   11 years 36 weeks ago

I was talking to my daughter about this subject (before I saw this post) and found it interesting that she said "but I haven't done anything yet". She is 25. So I sent her a list of what I could think of for her off the top of my head. She speaks/reads/writes Arabic, knows American Sign Language, plays the guitar, has won a singing contest, has lived in 4 states, performed in a play, been in the military, played the oboe. When she replied she said "it sounds like a lot more when you put it that way". It is funny to me that she couldn't see the interesting things she has done in her life as interesting or unique. I am going to challenge her to do a reflection with me at the beginning of each year going forward (rather than the traditional resolutions exercise).

  • How to Save on School Supplies Without Going Crazy   11 years 36 weeks ago

I do something similar. I give my kids around $80-$100 each to cover their supplies. If they have money left over after they buy their supplies they can use it for clothes. So if they re-use things from last year, it gives them more money to spend on clothes. Or if they fall in love with some special backpack that is $60 then they know they won't have anything left for clothes. I don't think they like this system very well, because some of their friends get nice supplies AND lots of clothes, but I think it is teaching them life-long lessons about budgeting. Money is a limited resource - and each person can spend it on what makes sense to them and then see if they are happy with that choice later and then if not, learn from it and make a better choice next time.

  • If You're Eating These 6 Things, Your "Diet" Is Doing Nothing   11 years 36 weeks ago

Yes, the satiety of a food is key. Regardless of calorie theory, Americans are the most likely to ignore serving portions and overeat (especially when one of the foods is marketed as "healthy" or "low-cal"). That's why it's so important to make a smarter choice in the first place –– like fresh grapes instead of raisins.

  • Ask the Readers: Will You Shop Back-to-School Sales?   11 years 36 weeks ago

I shop the sales even though my daughter is too young for school yet. I picked up some supplies to put in Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes. I also picked up some Crayola products on sale, a white board and blunt-tipped scissors for my child to practice with. I also use the scissors and pencil cases in my craft project bags. I also like to stock up on tape products for birthday and Christmas wrapping.

  • 16 Time and Money Saving Apps for Freelancers   11 years 37 weeks ago

Freelancing business today is one of the most popular trend of business. Even if some one working full time for an organization looks out for some freelancing work so as to earn a little more. Who in this world would not look out for some thing extra, almost every one. But again the question comes up to how to manage the business. And in that management time is an important factor.

With these set of tools being mentioned here in the post, I would like to add one more tool as well, the cloud based time tracking software from Replicon ( http://www.replicon.com/time-tracking-softwares.aspx ). The apps practically works compatibly with the android and iOS devices helps attain a proper time management.

In my experience, the Kirkland bags are BETTER than the name brand! We have used them for years and have only had ONE leak/tear, which was our fault, not a defective bag, but poor choice of contents. ;) Love them!!!

  • Credit Unions vs. Banks: What's the Difference?   11 years 37 weeks ago

The fewer branches and ATMs comment is wrong.

Almost all credit unions belong to a network of ATMs that includes most 7-Eleven ATMs (even overseas 7-Elevens!), so as a credit union member I have access to more ATMs without extra frees than any bank.

Also, many credit union branches are share branches where I can do almost all of the same transactions as my local credit union. That means I have access to roughly the same number of branches as Bank of America.

30,000 ATMS and 5,000+ shared branches:

  • 10 DIY Dog Toys You Can Make for Pennies   11 years 37 weeks ago

BETTYZIESGER1952 - I had to laugh when I read your post. How true is that!!! I've heard that dogs shouldn't chew on sticks, but seriously - that's one of the things things they'd be chewing on out in the wild, too, like bones.

Your post reminded me of something I read online a couple of months ago about how we never wore helmets, we ate fatty things, etc, and we're still here. We were allowed to be kids (I'm not giving the right examples, but you get the idea).

Something that never ceases to amuse me is how most animals are on diets and most of the human population is obese. It's interesting when a heavy set person will look at some dog and say "[he/she] needs to go on a diet..."

  • 10 DIY Dog Toys You Can Make for Pennies   11 years 37 weeks ago

My parents dog, who is a 4 y/o Golden Retriever, destroys any type of store bought toy given to him. He loves to chew on sticks (or, where I'm now living, old palm wood/bark) so I've found it's generally cheaper to let him chew on those and he's had no ill effects from them. A side benefit is he uses them to take out frustration and boredom.

Re: SQUEAKER. If your dog pulls the squeaker out of a toy, you can save it and play with it by squeaking it (without letting the dog take it) or pretending to throw it, etc. It's good for HOURS of fun.

I've also found that cat toys work when used with him, too. There's a remote control mouse I got from the supermarket that Sammy (my parents golden) just loves. He reacted just like a cat would, pouncing on it. A "spotlight" pen also works, as well as what I refer to as the "cookie game." First, I break the biscuits into pieces, map out where I plan to put the pieces, put Sammy in a room saying "cookie game!" then "hide" the biscuits. He LOVES it. He comes out of the room looking and sniffing. Note: Best way to do this game is to place the treats on top of things and not really hidden. At least at first. Walk around with him/her in case he/she needs help finding a treat, but let them find it. If Sammy has trouble, I usually sit near it and then use verbal help.

  • Why you can't trust a real estate agent.   11 years 37 weeks ago

I agree with this article and those of you who don’t like it …tough. After many house sells and purchases we are amazed at the lack of negotiating that each realtor as shown. Why would a seller/buyer get offended at an offer? Why? It’s a free market folks. We had a realtor annoyed that we wouldn’t meet a sellers price by 3k. We stuck to our guns and won. He was sweating bullets for days though. It’s our money after all. And yes, for Michele, we have jobs too…maybe more hectic than yours…it’s debatable. Hard work equals money. That simple. Don’t expect to get handed sales on a platter while laying in bed. Buck up! Ps , we hired you. You work for us.

A calorie is a calorie to your body but you do have to consider the satiety index if different foods. You are going to feel fuller on 500 calories of grapes than 500 calories of raisins.
